Ever since buying a Kindle I read lots more books on the device. So where to get free books or library books outside of a Prime membership?

Well, pretty much everyday I go to the Weber-Books Blog and check out that which is the the Editor's Picks of the Free Books of the Day.

http://www.weberbooks.com/kindle/buy-a-book-support-kindle-buffet/

These books go 'free' as part of a Amazon marketing effort in which the author lets them be downloaded for free up to five days per every ninety days. Usually for full marketing effect, the author uses "three days, then two" in which for the first of two periods they set the free download period for three days in order to make the Weber Blog and other blogs, and then a month or so later set for free a two-day period. Most of the 'free books' are part of a fictional series, be they romance, mystery, sci-fi, horror or erotica. The very first book of the series is used to 'hook' those who read the author, like what they see, then look up the author and pay for books two and three of the series.

These free books are a mixed bag, but every so often there is a true gem. When one is found that I think is especially good, I'll post it to the sundry forums so that they can download on one of the free days and read at leisure. I will also write a review in short if I have time to do so, or go back and post it. What is important is if you find my recommendation useful, you go and download the book that day it is posted.

By the way, you don't need to have a Kindle in order to download and read these free books. You do need an Amazon account however. An Amazon account is easy to set up as all you need is an e-mail account and possibly a debit card. If you make a mistake or one is made, then you usually have seven days to 'return' the book, i.e. to delete the book from your account and get a refund.

I find this service quite useful.

Hail Victory!!!

Author's Description:

Standing a few feet from where the killers opened fire on Ken Rex McElroy more than three decade ago, Harry N. MacLean tells the story of how he came to write his Edgar Award-winning book in his new true crime short, “The Story Behind 'In Broad Daylight.'”

MacLean had doors slammed in his face, guns pulled on him, and was bitten by a dog. Eventually, he won over the closed community of Skidmore, Mo. The inhabitants shared with him the reign of terror Ken Rex McElroy inflicted for twenty years in Northwest Missouri, and information about his murder on the main street of Skidmore in 1981. Despite 45 witnesses, the case remains unsolved. MacLean tells the story in his book “In Broad Daylight,” first published in 1988.

“The Story Behind 'In Broad Daylight'” brings the book up to date and includes several previously unpublished pictures. It also answers many questions about the killing itself, such as who was involved, and what has become of them. The author discusses the nature of the moral consequences of the killing for the town and those involved in the killing. MacLean describes the breakthrough events when key characters agreed to speak with him, and he realized he would finally get the story.

“In Broad Daylight” was a New York Times bestseller for 12 weeks and was made into a movie starring Brian Denehey, Cloris Leachman and Chris Cooper. It was re-released as an e-book on Amazon on July 10, the 31st anniversary of the killing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Accurate?? Well Sorta, January 11, 2013
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

This review is from: The Story Behind "In Broad Daylight" (Kindle Edition)
Cover to cover, first page to last, this book delivers a good tale. I can't fault the writing or accuracy for the most part. (Dates and roads are a little wobbly) But the portrayal of the community makes me grind my teeth.

No mention of the university, 5-screen movie theater, and aquatics center that is the envy of the region. Or of the fine restaurants, country club, Mozingo Lake, and 18-hole golf course. Instead, the author writes of coon hunts conducted by bearded men. I can almost see the line of `chaw juice' staining their mouth.

Sir, you do us a disservice and paint yourself as a big city snob.

Naming the supposed gunman sells books. Great marketing that. But it is still conjecture, taking the word of that certain person who (of course) never, ever lied about anything. IMO, you've harmed the family and community by shouting the name in this fashion. Like they haven't gone through enough.

Other than that, the book is great.

My Review:

I read the original book, In Broad Daylight (http://www.amazon.com/Broad-Daylight-Crime-Classics-ebook/dp/B008J7CNGU/ref=pd_sim_kstore_1) years ago when it first came out, saw the TV Movie, and re-read the original book a few times more.

The author, Harry Maclean, tells how he as an outsider took it upon himself to go to the small NorthWest Missouri town of Skidmore to investigate as an outsider who had killed this criminal anglo-mestizo Ken Rex McElroy on a hot July day in 1981.

The alleged killer(s) were never tried and it seems that the main gunman died in 2009. The FBI and the rest of the federal and state law enforcers were unable to break the 'code of silence' to outsiders. So what made the locals open up to this particular outsider?

One of the local leaders realized that the story of a small town brought to the brink by a clever cunning lowborn violent amoral criminal who shot a popular small-town grocer was going to be told anyway. It already had been told by the national media and by some guido from the Rolling Stone. So by plugging away, telling the people that he was a lawyer and wanted to get discreetly to the truth, one of the local leaders took the author under his wing and the author got some of the locals to talk when they wouldn't talk to the 'law' that had betrayed them.

Northwest Missouri is a clannish 'corn-field county' in which the values are like those of the Ozarks and the hillbilly South and they meet those of the plainsmen from Iowa and the Midwest. You have a rural mentality of suspicion for the ultimate outsiders, the law from places close like Marysville and St. Joseph and and far like Kansas City. Local people learn that the law cares nothing for them and when criminals hire 'the law' like this State Senator Richard Webster (from Carthage and whose son became Missouri Attorney General and then went to prison for corruption) and "the law" doesn't care what happens, then it is every man for himself.

Reading the original book, and this "making of" book, one senses that it was the community which was faced with a hard choice of what to do. Ken McElroy was already violent, now facing prison time he was getting crazy and desperate. In many ways, McElroy was courting death by putting certain men in the community at risk, and on one hot July day in 1981 he found it.

The question asked is why was this killing done in broad daylight as opposed to being a night-time assassination with no witnesses? I think the community decided to as a community to let the men who were next on McElroy's hit-list blow his head off and decide to say nothing about it to the law. This is an example of 'community agreement' or, of mob action. Such things used to be common 100 years ago as lynchings. McElroy was the 'victim' of a non-rope community lynching as people who were the direct descendants of people who from time to time did what they had to do did so as justice when pretend legality and the System failed because it was corrupt and bought off.

So one of the local natural leaders evaluated the author for a couple of months, found out that he wanted to find the truth, was a licensed attorney and thus compelled to keep secrets in confidence. I get the impression reading this "Story Behind" book that a certain agreement was made for the author to tell most of the story and set it up so that the killers of McElroy would walk free and yet tell as much of the truth as could be told without the outside world punishing the culprits. The widow of McElroy got a small settlement and moved away. And their choice of Historian, Harry Maclean, told the story as it could be told to a hostile outside world.

People are really quite clannish and ever suspicious of the outsiders. This really is a story of something which was common a century ago, of communities settling their accounts with their own local criminal classes, without the corrupt influence of outsiders and their lawyers, judges, police, social workers, journalists, and all the apparatus of a hostile outside 'them.' There still are books written about the McCoy-Hatfield feud of the 1880s. Well, the same characteristics still existed in pockets such as Skidmore Missouri in the 1980s as well. There will be no more thorough books written about this incident as the times have changed and the original players have died.

Hail Victory!!!

Author's Description:

Know Stealing is the culmination of 15 years of research and 5 years of writing, learning more, digging deeper, throwing material away and writing again, always searching for the root causes of our problems as a state and nation.

Know Stealing begins:

"A people or nation that does not understand liberty cannot defend it."

"I work late and rise early thinking about liberty, production and the nature of things. The stakes are high. Your time is valuable. Please permit me to be direct. We have been deceived, and I know how it was done.
The reader with an open mind, who actively questions everything, including the ideas recorded here, will get the most out of Know Stealing. When you reach the last page, it is my hope that you will have demanded, and that I will have delivered, solid arguments capable of standing under scrutiny and pressure."

Following are a few other excerpts from the introduction:

"... My single objective is to share the very best of what I've learned with those who are willing to open their minds and think, in order to understand how to restore and preserve our great nation as a land of liberty and production. I welcome all challenges with regard to these ideas."

"... The material in this book is powerful. It will teach a bold middle school student all that is necessary to debate and defeat a formally educated economist or an experienced politician. Imagine a magnificent skyscraper that is built on a lie. If a person, even a child, can show that the foundation is a lie, then the whole building has to be an illusion. Many things we believe are true are no more than illusions. Children who study the ideas presented in this book will have a better understanding of the world we live in than most successful and formally educated adults."

"... One of my challenges is to explain where we are wrong in our thinking without unnecessarily offending people. At the same time, I would debate any citizen, businessman, pastor, professor, teacher, leader, political activist, elected official or journalist on these ideas at any time, in any place. The bottom line is that our thinking is extremely mixed up and, in many important areas, just flat out wrong. The errors in our thinking and understanding are costing us our liberty, our homes, our jobs, our retirements and our children's future."

"... Liberty and prosperity are always at stake in every nation for every generation. Eventually bad decisions in the past force a generation to come to terms with the truth about what is necessary to sustain a free society. We are one of those generations. In our case, we can no longer naively depend on past production, new land, old-style immigration, industrialization, available cheap energy and paper wealth to maintain our standard of living."

###

Know Stealing will shatter preconceived notions and replace them with clear and precise knowledge which is capable of driving restoration in our American Republic in particular, and modern civilization in general. Clearly the preceding statement is bold, but it will hold up under honest critical review.

With wisdom, knowledge, understanding, courage and commitment, we can right the ship and restore prosperity in the United States in a matter of months. The same is true in any society that will genuinely defend individual life, liberty and property.

One of the principle goals of the book is to enable more people to Know Stealing, so that we can enforce a policy of No Stealing. Theft that goes undetected will never be stopped.

Truth, Reason, and Inspiration, December 21, 2011 (http://www.amazon.com/review/RMUAGEVR3SW0O/ref=cm_cr_dp_title?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B0066TVO40&nodeID=133140011&store=digital-text)

"Lies take decades, truth takes a minute." This is a wonderful quote from the book that is indicative of the read. When truth is presented clearly, especially when accompanied by an unobstructed chain of reason, it resonates instantly and last forever. Truth transcends all nationalites, races, cultures, and any other social, economic, or political segment in our world system. All of the subjects presented in Know Stealing qualifies as truth based on this merit.

Since wisdom and understanding are more valuable than the treasures of the earth, it no coincidence that after reading Know Stealing we are left with a feeling of enrichment in one of its purest forms. Shane Coley's productive efforts in uncovering this nearly hidden insight and his willingness to compile it in such a way that is simple to understand is a testament the author's diligence, patience, and grace. The parables are great additions to expound the knowledge presented. The content is layered from start to finish to savory perfection. Know Stealing is a baklava of wisdom.

If read purely as a study of economics, it rivals some of the best books ever written on the subject and should be required reading in economics classes worldwide.

Most reader will be left with a rekindling of purpose and will to be a part of the solution. Real liberty results from exposure to truth, however with liberty is responsibility of action. Know Stealing has the ability to inspire the leadership that will be necessary to right the wrong that has our nation and our world in disarray.

Know Stealing should be in everyone's library and should be discussed an taught regularly in our homes, churches, schools, and businesses.

My Review:

A Christian describes how to know parasitic government stealing

The author makes a Christian statement of how to "K-NO-W Stealing" when regime criminals and other social parasites do it. An excellent manifesto about fiat currency masquerading as "money" and how taxation in all of its forms is theft.

However, left unmentioned is anything about how to end stealing by ZOG/Babylon the Third and Final and all of ZOG's ZOGbots. I prefer to "End Stealing" the old fashioned way, by skinning.

Author's Description:

In June, 1978, six months before the cult massacre in Jonestown, Guyana, Flo Conway and Jim Siegelman published SNAPPING, a groundbreaking investigation of the spreading epidemic of sudden, drastic personality changes that was bringing a frightening new era of personal loss and horrific human tragedies. SNAPPING went on to sell 100,000 hardcover and trade paperback copies and become a required text in high school and college classes in psychology, sociology, persuasion, mass communication, criminology, and comparative religion.

Now SNAPPING is back in a new Kindle edition of the expanded and updated 2nd Edition from Stillpoint Press. Today snapping is on the rise among zealous cult members, born-again Christians, anti-government ideologues, participants in popular self-help, professional training and “stress reduction” programs--and, increasingly, among people in everyday life situations. And the epidemic is spreading worldwide in the 21st century.

In this Kindle edition, the authors show how powerful, mind-altering spiritual and personal growth practices found in all these domains may impair the brain’s living information-processing powers and lead to profound personal changes, altered awareness, thinking, feeling and free choice, post-traumatic stress disorders, grand delusions, and violent destructive acts. In exclusive interviews and fascinating science, Conway and Siegelman span the history of snapping -- from the 1969 Manson Family murders, to the 1978 Peoples Temple massacre, to the disastrous 1993 siege and conflagration at the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas. Findings in their award-winning study of the effects of new spiritual and personal growth practices — the first of its kind—along with a special postscript on the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, the Aum Shinrikyo poison gas attack in the Tokyo subway, and the global rise of extremist “terror cells” of many persuasions complete this seminal work that calls for new ways to counter a mushrooming threat to the mental health of America and every civilized society.

From Library Journal

In this expanded edition of the 1978 original, Conway and Siegelman continue their study of the altering of the American psyche, which has led to the rise of religious cults, super Christian sects, private citizen militias, and other phenomena that dominate today's headlines. Probably more timely now than when first published, this is an important title for academic and public libraries.

Explores the way cults and other factors are causing people to give themselves over to those like David Koresh of Waco infamy, or becoming walking time bombs like Timothy McVeigh, the alleged perpetrator of the Oklahoma bombing...a powerful look at a social phenomenon that is making headlines.

Their book is judicious, sensible, well-researched and very frightening.

This review is from: Snapping: America's Epidemic of Sudden Personality Change, 2nd Edition (Paperback)

This book provides an analysis of the techniques used by cults and certain "self help" agencies to alter the personality of the client. It presents a model, using catastrophe theory, in which the person is driven to a snapping point. After this snap, the personality is drastically changed, and often it requires another snap to rectify the situation. The theory presented here is very interesting. The cases discussed include those annoying cults and "self help" groups which roam college campuses (and its good to see that the authors do not bend to political correctness and include some of the more popular groups). In addition, the effects of stress are discussed in industrial settings. And, the governments royal botch-job at Waco is examined. Personally, I consider some of the "cult deprogrammers" as heroes who have tried to uphold a person's fundamental right to freedom of thought, against the sway of politicians. The only problem I have with this book is that there never is made a distinction between genuine religious conversion and cult conversion (snapping). I do not know how such a distinction could be made, but perhaps it would be an interesting area for further research.

My Review:

The part at the back of the book about why 'evil militiamen' and especially Christian Identity fanatics could have been written by some ZOG/Babylon the Third and Final mighty evil apologists in general and Spawn of Satan jews in particular.

These idiots actually believe that they can make a moral judgment other than "Government good, White subjects evil." They don't seem to understand that there is going to be an awful lot of racial and social friction as this mighty Evil Empire becomes one in the ash-heap of History with Nineveh, Tyre, and Rome the First. Lothrup Stoodard covered it best in his masterpiece, "The Revolt Against Civilization" subtitled "The Menace of the Under-Man". Let's understand that the ubermensch is the jew, the non-white, and the treasonous whigger and nothing can be solved until every single one of them are dead and those salvageable that followed them are enslaved and broken.

Publication Date: March 5, 2012
Robots will soon begin taking human jobs in places like retail stores, fast food restaurants, construction sites and transportation. The key technology that will fuel the transition is inexpensive computer vision systems, and the number of human jobs at risk numbers in the tens of millions. More than half of the jobs in the United States could be eliminated.

With half of the jobs eliminated by robots, what happens to all the people who are out of work? Marshall Brain's book Manna explores the possibilities and shows two contrasting outcomes, one filled with great hope and the other quite uncomfortable.

Join Marshall Brain, founder of HowStuffWorks.com, for a skillful step-by-step walk through the robotic transition, the collapse of the human job market that results and an surprising look at humanity's future in a post-robotic world.

All Watched Over By Machines of (Choose Only One): A) Brutal Efficiency or B) Loving Grace

March 9, 2012
By Bob Blum (http://www.amazon.com/review/R3CYTTJD33PV45/ref=cm_cr_dp_title?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B007HQH67U&nodeID=133140011&store=digital-text)

A few days ago (March 3, 2012) I heard Marshall Brain give a riveting talk to the Stanford Transhumanist Association. What will be the fate of humanity in a future world populated by supersmart AIs and robots. His message: basically, we're toast.

According to Brain, the future will bring increasing unemployment as broad swaths of humanity are replaced by robots. As a consequence, wealth will continue to concentrate in the hands of a privileged few, with the great majority (the 99%) being forced into grinding poverty. (You've heard this before from, say, Karl Marx - but it gets even more bleak.)

As the AIs become ever more powerful they may come to regard us first as chimpanzees, then as chickens, and finally as bacteria. How will the AIs deal with us? Possibilities include extermination, zoos, prisons, and tailor-made virtual reality utopias (Heavenly or Eden-like versions of The Matrix.)

Scary stuff, but is it true? Yeah, it might happen.

In a brief chat afterward, I told him the best I could see for humanity in a post-Singularity world was planet Earth as a retirement home for humanity - watched over by "machines of loving grace." Perhaps not the exuberant vision
that you're used to, but not that different from real life. Now, you get old and die, but you get to see an improved, next generation carry the torch forward.
Post-Singularity, it's just that the machines are carrying the torch (directing planetary affairs, doing the real innovation, and going to the stars.)

Ok, now back to the book. Having been primed for a nonstop trip to Hell, the vision portrayed in the book was actually a relief. Although the images of minimum wage employment enforced by a silicon Big Brother are bleak to my Western eyes, as expertly portrayed by Marshall, they might be a welcome relief to many in Asian sweatshops (think of the rash of suicides at Foxconn.)

Toward the end of this novella, he transitions to a far more optimistic, alternative future with greatly expanded freedom and opportunities. That alternative society (also involving tight integration with and supervision by
AIs) is described in fascinating detail.

The work is a detailed dystopian extrapolation in the tradition of Orwell's 1984 and Huxley's Brave New World. The technical details are as expertly and believably detailed as one would expect from the inventor of HowStuffWorks.
Brain is a social critic to be taken seriously, and this is an engaging work.

While I enjoyed reading a review copy on my Kindle, the work is also available for free on the internet. He wants the work to be widely read, and it should be.

Best shortstory

This review is from: Manna: Two Visions of Humanity's Future (Kindle Edition)

At first, it seemed rather interesting. A computer in a fast-food restaurant, named after a kind of food. New employees don't require training because the computer can guide you through everything via headset. That should get plenty more people employed, right?

And then it turns into an full AI (of sorts), and everything turns efficient. What this does to America (where the entire story is until later) is that is it quite simply and quickly, broken thrice: you either have a job, don't have one, or are enjoying your fortune. But robots are more efficient than workers, in everything they can be built to do well; all they needed was working vision. (everything else stays unchanged for the most part) The Manna system realizes this as soon as the engineers working on such a technology make it viable enough to use. Unemployment spikes like a moisture sensor's readout when suddenly plunged directly into the ocean.

Later on, theres the Australia Project, which is at once both the best thing ever and should've happened now yet the most depressing this I've read recently due to how much farther away it seems like in comparison to eventual apocalypse via efficiency and robotics.

My Review:

A sort of lollipop 1984 or Brave New World (http://www.amazon.com/review/RMFHF2P0N45SQ)

I read and downloaded this free Kindle book today and it is both utopian and dystopian. The premise is that Artificial Intelligence takes over, first at a fast food restaurant, then all over AmeriKwa to where 200 million people are placed in a sort of 8 x 8 cell in a sort of stacked prison within a small unit with nothing to look forward to other than being fed and watered like animals with no other purpose. "Manna" is short for 'manager' and implies the good food and support coming down from God to the Chosen Children of Israel post Exodus in the Sinai Desert. In the overtly dystopian portion, a young fast-food worker whose parents were upper-middle class eventually has his teaching job made surplus, and is sent into this sort of combination prison/nursing home along with 200 million surplusage population where there is nothing much to do. Robots have gotten vision capabilities and thus produce everything and so there is a small percentage of the population and major corporations who have everything with the rest of the 95% having nothing but warehousing and being fed in miles upon miles of cellblocks many stories high, guarded by invariably polite robots who drug those who do not comply and put them back in their cells.

In contrast, there is another society in which robots produce everything, there is one page of rules, everything is recycled, and the humans whose parents bought a one of one-billion shares has an equal vote in which all have exactly the same 'credits'. There is no want or famine because robots produce abundantly. There are implants to allow the citizens to experience virtual reality or simply living life as a sort of resort. The passive 'hero' of this story ends up choosing to live as a sustenance farmer in a sort of Colonial Williamsburg. One chooses to have his brain put in a jar on a rack and live 'virtually.' The entire island continent of Australia is part of this social experiment.

I found this book to be a dystopia in all respects. Most supposedly 'human' critters are nothing but beasts of the field anyway. Does it really matter how animals are cared for when there really isn't any free will?

I found it to be a sort of lollipop 1984 or Brave New World. Unsatisfying and saccharin, but thankfully short.

Author's Description:

When the most deadly tornado to hit the United States in six decades roared through Joplin, Missouri, on May 22, 2011, it destroyed one-third of the city, and took 161 lives. Among those most affected by the natural disaster were the 500 students of East Middle School, most of whom lived in the path of the tornado. Many of the students lost their homes and had their lives changed forever. One student lost his life. Scars from the Tornado tells the story of how those students and the staff at East Middle School battled their tornado demons, moving their base of operations to an empty warehouse on the outskirts of the district and starting school on time, just 87 days after the tornado. In their own words, students tell their tornado stories and recount the events of their most unlikely school year. Randy Turner, an eighth grade English teacher at East and co-author of 5:41: Stories from the Joplin Tornado and Spirit of Hope, reveals how he and his fellow faculty members battled to make a warehouse into a school and a second home for the children. Scars from the Tornado is the heartwarming story about how teachers and students faced one of the most challenging years any school has ever had.

I really enjoyed Mr. Turner's newest book sharing stories from the students at East Middle school. My daughter was also one of Mr Turner's students and we lost our home in the tornado as well. All of us share similar stories, but here he has brought those stories together and shown the true spirit of our hometown: Strength. Thank you, Mr Turner, for being an awesome teacher, that made such a difference in my daughter's life.

My Review:

Cousin Randy Turner is a former newspaper reporter and editor who was such a saccharin gliberal whigger butthole fag that enjoyed using the power of the lie-papers to suck up to the local power structure and lie about his perceived enemies amongst a population of conservative people living in Southwest Missouri. "Cousin Randy" Turner (Cousin to Swillis Gumpff-Turner the Noted HillBilly Klansman) was an odious smarmy shithead despised by myself, my domestic partner Roxie Fausnaught, and pretty much everyone both male and female who suspected that Cousin Randy belonged in jew Yawk or Sans Fagscrisco.

Anyway, after a number of years of writing and printing up lies, Randy Turner got a libel suit and was kicked out as managing editor of the Carthage Press and not allowed to work anywhere else as a reporter in the Four-State Area of SW Missouri, NW Arkansas, NE Oklahoma, or SE Kansas. Yes, Randy Turner was that despised around here.

So Randy Turner, kicked out for lying to the mature audience with the free will to refuse to pay to read lies in lie-papers went into poisoning the minds of the local school children/indoctrination factory/whigger processing plant. Randy Turner thinks that he should have access after hours to underage students so as to mess with their minds. Most students likely look at Randy Turner as I recollect having to deal with a closeted homosexual mathematics teacher when I went to public schools: as someone creepy who is looking to get close to the gaywad students and smart unattractive feminist and lesbian girls who will of course love him along with their gliberal whigger and anglo-mestizo and negro parents. Normal White children of both sexes view Randy Turner as a closeted homosexual creepazoid of the sort who would have been run off to a more tolerant area of the country forty years ago.

Ever since the Joplin Tornado destroyed around a quarter of the town, Randy Turner has become the "Anne Frank" of the Joplin Tornado Holohoax. Yes, the Joplin Tornado was pretty bad and it killed a number of people, especially some through ingestion of fungus after the fact. But the Joplin City "Good Ol' Boys Network" profited from this disaster at the expense of poor and working class people who used to live in substandard housing. Democrat politicians from Obongo to Missouri Governor Jay Nixon have jumped on the Joplin Tornado bandwagon, exploiting the natural disaster and making it into a sort of natural Auschwitz.

From what I have read of this book, the third co-written by Randy Turner, he takes the essays of his various students -- the ones who can stand him or want to see their names in print -- and groups them together in a series and probably edits them heavily. The entire book is how these 9-12 year old children viewed the Joplin Tornado. It was bad and scary and somehow they survived it. Yup, Cousin Randy Turner will become the Anne Frank of the Joplin Tornado Holohoax and commercialize it and get us all to sob and whine and kvetch about how bad it is for the next twenty or thirty years long after the matter remains relevant for those who have moved on with their lives.

A dishonest silly book by a thoroughly dishonest silly lying moral imbecile turning children into useless idiots and drones like himself in the public indoctrination edjewmacation centers.

Download and read it for free only if you have a strong stomach.

Author's Description:

Publication Date: December 30, 2010

A young man is about to graduate from medical school when a sudden shift of fate changes his life forever. He becomes stuck in the most detested profession for the rest of his life, and he is on his way to becoming the most well-known executioner in the history of Bohemia.

Master Jan finds himself in the center of the historical events of the time. The religious and political turmoil of Bohemia culminates in the 1621 White Mountain Battle. Czech Protestant rebels are defeated by Catholic forces, and Master Jan is to execute 27 men who are his fellow Protestants.

The Old Town Executioner gives the reader a first hand account about how justice was carried out by the medieval law. While his memoirs offer an intriguing account of the manners and values of late medieval society, his observations about human nature may come as a surprise. The law and society have changed since the 17th century, but people have changed very little.

By Steven Reynolds

This review is from: The Memoirs Of A Prague Executioner (Paperback)
A young medical student attempts to rescue a condemned woman by posing as the executioner's assistant. He fails to save her life, but changes his own forever. Stained by the association, he assumes the role he feigned. So begins his path to becoming a Master Executioner of Prague . . . This is Mirek Katzl's translation of an historical novel written by Josef Svátek and first pubished in 1905, loosely based on the memoir of Jan Mydlár an actual executioner in sixteenth-century Bohemia. A stirring portrait of a life and violent deaths, Katzl's work is engaging on several levels: as the memoir of morally compromised man who attempts to insulate himself from a society that shuns him; as a focalized history of Bohemia; as a study of the social function of capital punishment; and as a relentless exposition on methods of torture and execution which, though hardly coy, are certainly not gratuitous. Katzl's style is free-flowing and the narrative is lucid. As other readers have noted, the vignettes don't necessarily sum to a compelling plot, but so it is with memoir - a life does not unfold with the narrative pacing of a novel. Having said that, devotees of historical fiction will probably enjoy the wealth of detail and the air of authenticity. What I found most interesting here was the sense of how contradictory the role of executioner is within - or rather outside of - society. He is shunned as monstrous and disreputable, made to feel ashamed, and yet he is merely the instrument of law - the very thing that allows the society to flourish.

My Review:

I haven't read the entire book, merely the first third of the book, I want to get my review out before the Kindle e-book is no longer a free download.

This book was written by a Prague journalist living in the 19th Century from a manuscript memoir written by the Prague Master Executioner in the last years of the Sixteenth Century after Bohemia and Prague had gone all Hussite and in the early years of the 17th Century just as the great upheaval of the Thirty Year's War came to place. In fact, the cover art seems to be the famous engraving of the Second Defenestration of Prague (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_Defenestration_of_Prague#Second_Defenestrat ion_of_Prague) on May 23, 1618 in which some Protestants threw some Catholic ministers out of a third-story window seventy feet. None of the four Catholics were harmed because, Catholic version, angels saved them or Protestant version, they fell into a dungheap of horse shit and straw. Anyway, this is credited for starting the Thirty Years War, which lasted 30 years.

The book is an interesting narrative of torture, how public executioners were well paid and also loathed. Most of the executioners were mere criminals saved from execution with the 'master executioners' being skilled in their trade both of execution and eliciting confessions from torture. As today, most of the victims were indeed criminals, with a large minority probably being innocent, with the lower-level socially criminals getting hung and the higher-level criminals getting away with their crimes.

I'll write more of a review later.

By John Matlock

Format:Paperback

Born in 1910, Kurt Meyer was one of the younger generals to serve in the German Army during World War II. Most of the other generals, just like in the American/British armies, had served in World War I.

Meyer's combat career really began with the invasion of Poland in 1939. From there he fought in most of the major battles: Poland, Rotterdam, France, Balkans, Greece, Peloponnesus, Soviet Union and finally France again. In France in 1944 he was commander of the 12.SS-Panzer "Hitlerjugend" division. He was heavily involved with the fighting around Caen and the Falaise Pocket where he was captured.

In British and American histories of Caen and Falaise there is the big argument regarding the British/Montgomery view vs. the American/Patton view. Here is the view of a senior German commander of what happened during the battles. As you might guess, he contradicts both views.

After the war General Meyer was convicted of war crimes and sentenced to death. This was commuted to life in prison where he actually served nine years. He died in 1961, only 51 years old.

This book is based on an autobiography he wrote shortly after his release from prison, newly translated from the German.

Like a lot of you reading this, I have read innumerable books about the Second World War, most of them from the German perspective. The majority of these were testaments by former army officers or, in the latter instances, Party-government bigwigs. GRENADIERS was the first work I had ever bought penned by a former SS man, in this case Kurt "Panzer" Meyer. I was very interested to see what an ex-member of two notorious Waffen-SS divisions, the "Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler" and the "Hitlerjugend", would have to say...not merely about his combat experiences but about Hitler, National Socialism, and the war in general.

GRENADIERS exists on several levels simultaneously: a pure combat memior by a man who saw a hell of a lot of it, a treatise on the relationship of the Waffen-SS to its putative parent body, the Gestamt or "Total" SS, a spirited defense of the Waffen-SS against the "libels" leveled against it by the victorious Allies and by the postwar German government, and a memior of Meyer's trial for war crimes, his imprisonment (originally a death sentence) and his eventual release. On all these levels it succeeds...so much so that it permenently changed my view of the Waffen-SS. But I'm getting ahead of myself.

As a combat memior, the book is highly entertaining. It begins in media res, with Meyer's antitank unit rumbling into Poland in September 1939, and continues at a steady clip through the campaigns in France (1940) the Balkans (1941), Russia (1941 - 1943) and finally Normandy (1944), during which time he served with many legendary Waffen-SS frontfighters, including Fritz Witt, Max Wünsche, Michael Wittmann, Gerd Bremer, Theodor Wisch, and Sepp Dietrich. Meyer, who finished his career as the acting commander of the 12th SS Panzer Division, offers almost no biographical information about himself, and seldom "flashes back" to his peacetime existence. For the most part he is simply recounting tales of battle at the head of an elite recon unit as it was transferred from one hotspot to another all over Europe. Because Meyer's troops were motorized, riding on motorcycles, amphibious wagons, armored cars or assault guns, his accounts tend to be like his style of fighting: straight-ahead, breathless and fast-paced (not for nothing was his original nickname "Schneller" Meyer). He's an exciting narrator, if not a very skilled one, and he manages to convey a lot about his personality and philosophy of war without lecturing the reader. His accounts of the Russian and '44 French campaigns are particularly interesting to students of those theaters; he often speaks of the physical and psychological burdens placed on the German soldier by Russia's brutal climate and vast spaces, and of similar strains imposed in the West by the Allies overwhelming superiority of material. He writes without bitterness, and with a strong sense of respect to his own troops and to their opponents, be they Poles, Russians, Canadians (the French don't compare too well).

Meyer makes some very interesting points about the average Waffen-SS man in his outfit. He notes that they were very young (19 years old on average for privates), that 62% of them had been in technical or skilled trades before the war, and that very few of them had actually been members of the Allgemeine (General) SS before the war began. "These young men," he insists. "Fought for Germany and certainly did not die for a political party." Their motivations for joining the Waffen-SS were made from simpler stuff: it had the most attractive uniforms, its exploits were ballyhooed in the German press and it was regarded universally as an elite unit...all powerful motivators to young men looking for glory.

Meyer, who was captured in 1944 and tried for war crimes immediately after the war, recounts his trial with some bitterness, and not merely because he was, as were most German POWs of any standing, badly mistreated in captivity. Having taken great pains to show that he fought chivalrously at all times, he regarded the trial as a humiliation and a disgrace, the moreso because most of the evidence against him was based on heresay, perjury and ex post facto jurisprudence. Having his sentence commuted from death to life imprisonment was, in fact, worse than death for him, since he was incarcerated not in a POW camp or even a place like Spandau Prison but in an ordinary Canadian hooscow - with rapists, arsonists and murderers as cellmates. The agonizing struggle to obtain his release, waged in part by the Canadian press (which righteously pointed out that Canada had violated its own laws in convicting Meyer), and his life as a spokesman for HIAG in West Germany (the Waffen-SS veterans' association, dedicated to securing military benefits for Waffen-SS veterans) close out the book on a more or less uplifting note . . . though the reader may find himself exhausted emotionally by the time the last page is read. Meyer's journey is truly a punishing one.

It is a defense of the Waffen-SS, however, that the book is most intriguing. Meyer points out - repeatedly - that the Waffen-SS had relatively little to do with its parent body, and was merely a military organization in a slightly different uniform. The picture painted by history - of a band of murderous racial fanatics, screaming "Sieg Heil!" as they shot prisoners in the neck, is (Meyer insists) nonsense. Doubtless there were men of this type in Waffen-SS units, but as Meyer points out, nearly all of his opponents routinely shot prisoners in cold blood, bombed defenseless towns and used civilians as human shields - including, he adds pointedly, the Western Allies, who have tended throughout history to portray themselves as knights in shining armor.

The book isn't perfect. Meyer touches on the murders committed by his men in Normandy only in terms of explaining, after the fact, how he was disgusted by them and ordered an investigation into their commission; he tells the reader nothing about his life before the war or why he ended up in the SS in the first place (he was transferred from a Police unit, the German Police becoming part of the SS in 1936) and his style of writing is amateurish, though not without talent. None of this, however, was a significant detraction from GRENADIERS, which in the final analysis is not so much a memior but a tribute to the 900,000 men who, whatever their motivations or war records, were collectively dubbed "criminals" in 1945...and have spent, along with their families, dealing with the fallout of this sweeping judgement. But as Meyer is quick to point out, the ultimate verdict on a soldier comes from his opponent, and as one Canadian soldier exclaimed: "The SS were a bad bunch of bastards, but were they ever soldiers!"

My Review:

A free book written by an actual German officer of an elite fighting unit in the losing side of World War II / Second War to Kill White People telling about his wartime actions but more importantly, about the attempts to destroy him after the war because he fought for Greater Germany and his side lost.

This is a Kindle reprint of a book originally published back in the early 60's and a paperback by Stackpole Military History Series, the usual price of $21.95 is waived for a short period, one of them being April 20th, 2013, Hitler's Birthday.

Combat stories of eight German infantry soldiers: one paratrooper, two members of the Waffen-SS, and five members of the Wehrmacht

A concluding chapter examines infantry tactics.

This is an authentic account of German infantry aces, common foot soldiers who were thrust into a blazing maelstrom of bloody horror the world had never seen. On the frozen Russian steppes, under the scorching African desert sun, and in the final desperate battles, they were outnumbered and outgunned and faced impossible odds. Here are the fascinating stories of the men who stared death in the face during some of the most brutal battles ever waged.

From the Inside Flap

Here are dozens of gripping, never-before-told stories of battle in World War II from the point of view of the enemy.

This is an authentic account, often in their own words, of German infantry aces, common foot soldiers who were thrust into a blazing maelstrom of bloody horror such as the world had never seen. They faced the savage onslaught of fire-belching tanks at Kursk and carried wounded comrades hundreds of yards to safety through a hail of bullets. They fought alone behind enemy lines, tackled a foe vastly superior in numbers, and served as machine gunners in a thousand dangerous actions. On the frozen Russian steppes, under the scorching African desert sun, in the final desperate battles, they were outnumbered and outgunned, and faced impossible odds. Here are the fascinating stories of the men who stared death in the face during some of the most brutal battles ever waged.

These Aces Were Groundpounders!!, June 3, 2012

By Richard C. Geschke (http://www.amazon.com/gp/pdp/profile/AY7YN8E6NFY94/ref=cm_cr_pr_pdp) "In search of History!!" (Bristol, Ct) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Infantry Aces: The German Soldier in Combat in WWII (Stackpole Military History Series) (Paperback)

Infantry Aces refers to German infantry leaders who fought on the Eastern and Western and Mediterranean fronts. As the author did say in his preface of this excellent book, is that the term Aces is usually referred to fighter pilots who have made at least five kills. The Aces referred to in this book shows German infantrymen proving to all even in defeat that they were the best of the best in the fields of world combat.

The eight stories here as revealed by Korowski are excellent examples as to the solid tactics and use of fire and movement, use of artillery, overlapping fields of fire, use of defilade positions to advance on the enemy with the least amount of casualties. Each one of these infantry aces had a natural talent for leadership and displayed a total understanding of the uses of weapons, hand grenades and machine guns as well as anti-tank weapons such as the Panzer Faust.

Each of these highly trained individuals started from the enlisted ranks and all of these men rapidly rose through these ranks and some even became officers. Many of these men fought both on the Western Front and later on the Eastern Front. Some got to fight in Italy and others got to fight on the Western Front in the latter part of the war where they met the devastating fire power of the American units. One thing I did come away from the stories of these men is that they were all in awe of the tremendous firepower of the American combat units.

The stories told of these young German men who were true professional soldiers that maintained a high esprit de corps. They tell of true leadership and a concern for their own men. The misconception that the Germans were highly trained and good soldiers but could not think for themselves in the lower ranks is truly a myth. The Americans were not the only military establishment who could think on their own and be truly innovative in crucial and critical situations.

All these men were awarded Close Combat Badges, Wound Badges, the Iron Cross Second Class, The Iron Cross First Class and some received the Knights Cross of the Iron Cross., high praise indeed for these young infantrymen.

Mr. Kurowski ends the book in showing the WWII German Infantry doctrine and how the infantry units were designed and how they were built to use the weapons up to and including what the author sees as the basic infantry unit that being at the battalion level.

If you want to look into the mind and culture of what is was like being in a Wehrmacht infantry unit, please read this book. It is well written and it is indeed a classic!!

Happiness Is a Warm MP-40, April 25, 2011

By Rob Fitzgibbon (MA, USA) (http://www.amazon.com/gp/pdp/profile/AH5LWZEELPXJ6/ref=cm_cr_pr_pdp) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Infantry Aces: The German Soldier in Combat in WWII (Stackpole Military History Series) (Paperback)

Infantry Aces is pure Wehrmacht war porn - the whiff of gunpowder, with Tiger tanks and stuttering schmeisser's sticking it to Ivan and the Amis and the Tommies at every turn. The German landsers described therein are invariably brave, loyal, steadfast and true, with thoughts of mutter, strudel and Mercedes-Benz under their stalhelm.
The dialog seems fabricated, there's no mention of atrocities and the overall impression is the romanticism as the salve for catastrophic defeat.

Kurowski was a reputedly a former war correspondent for the Wehrmacht, and his work reads like an OKW press release or an article in Signal magazine, circa 1943. Exciting and heroic? Definitely. Accurate historical biography? Probably not so much.

My Review:

A free Stackpole military book written by a former German Army war correspondent. I haven't read the stories of the 'Infantry Aces' yet, but the last section on Infantry tactics upon the invention of the modern machine gun and how the German Army essentially recreated infantry tactics is most informative.

Download it while it is free. Stackpole Military History books are invariably interesting to me.

Download (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004BJ11E0/ref=kinw_myk_ro_title) and read at leisure now.

My new book Let Teachers Teach (http://www.amazon.com/Let-Teachers-Teach-ebook/dp/B00CR7YHQC/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1369758004&sr=1-1&keywords=Let+Teachers+Teach), a collection of some of my essays on education is available today and tomorrow (Tuesday, May 28, and Wednesday, May 29, as a free Amazon Kindle download.

Along with the essays are updates, additional commentary and a newly-written introduction bemoaning the fact that I got caught by the School Administration and am about to get fired for disobedience to Board of Education policies and stalking minor students after school hours without the knowledge or permission of parents and school administration.

The book includes the following essays:

1. Violence, Statistics, and American Education - This one, written just after Sandy Hook, is the one that is being used against me by the joplin School District because I posted a link to my book No Child Left Alive from it when I copied and pasted it onto Room 210 Discussion. I get to do whatever I please, school district rules be fucked.

2. The Writers' Wall of Fame - A more personal essay, this one describes the Writers' Wall oF Fame I use to reward my students for excellent work and some memories of it. Also, not being as creative of an author as I am a liar, how I use these documents from my favored little gaywads and lesboskankettes to pad my shitty e-books.

3. The House of Bricks - One of my Joplin Tornado essays, includes the hunt for one of my eighth graders in the apartment complex behind the 15th St. Wal-Mart. Any excuse for stalking after hours.

4. Missouri's Newest Lobbyist, Michelle Rhee - My examination of the StudentsFirst organization and how its name does not go along with its views. Fucking uppity dog-eating gookess that doesn't understand her place or is suitably gratefool to us gliberal whigger butthole fags.

5. A Seventh Grader's Gift That Keeps On Giving - The effect of a New York teenager's gift to my class after the tornado. And no, it wasn't a virtual blowjob.

6. A Day of Miracles - A return to school after the tornado. Shame that the survivors weren't turned into soap or lampshades from the jewplin Tornado Holohoax.

7. Joplin's Apocalypse Now - Another tornado essay. Every day is May 22d, 2011 now. Itz moar than a Holohoax, itz a racket.

8. Returning to My Tornado-Ravaged School - My first visit to East Middle School, two days after the tornado. You voters need to build us some Taj Mahals of Ignorance as trailers are not enough.

9. Sanitizing of Huckleberry Finn - My thoughts on a new version of Mark Twain's classic that removes the N word, plus remembering my sixth and seventh grade teacher Mrs. Jean Rowe, who read the book to me and my classmates. The only acceptable use for the word "nigger."

10. Speaking for Victims of a School Shooting - Looking back at the shooting at Memorial Middle School. So many people were sympathizing with the shooter. I wrote this one for the other students. Fuck the Second Amendment and fry the little non-gaywad fucker for life.

11. The Dangers of Data-Driven Education - No wonder the people in administration have a problem with me. How dare you measure our work product.

12. The Lies They Tell About Teachers - The next few essays are all written as a response to the ongoing attacks on classroom teachers. At least us gliberal whigger butthole fag teachers.

13. The Changing Expectations of Teachers - I tell the story of a student who came by after school just to talk and I found out years later that innocuous conversation had driven thoughts of suicide out of her mind. Now, with a culture of highly scripted, micromanaged meetings disguised as "collaboration" and "professional development," I wonder if a teacher will even be available for the next young person contemplating killing himself or herself. There is no excuse for ending stalking.

14. A Teacher Witch Hunt - Wherein I get caught and prosecuted.

15. Glenn Beck and Public Education - That clown needs to be censored like I censor my blogs and I used to do at the lie-paper until I got fired.

16. Tribute to an Inspirational Teacher - Each year, until this one, I have asked my students to write essays describing an East Middle School teacher who has inspired them. The students vote on the Most Inspirational Teacher, not based on which teacher is the most popular, but on which student wrote the best paper. In this essay, I write about when this award was received by one of my favorite East colleagues, Kim Frencken, because of a paper written by one of my favorite former students, Taryn Parker. I had them lil' gaywads jumping through hoops.

17. To Sir With Love Revisited - Usually every year, again not this one, I show the Sidney Poitier movie To Sir With Love. Don't you just love it where that nigger had them lil' whiggresses' panties wettt? Almost enough to make me wish I was a nigger and heterosexual. In this essay, I talk about the difficulties his character, teacher Mark Thackeray, would have with today's soulless data-driven education.

18. Remembering Ryan Baker - One of the most difficult essays I have ever written. This is a tribute to one of my Diamond students after he committed suicide. Itz rough being 'different' here in homophobic fly-over cuntree.

19. There Is No Crisis In Public Education - I make the case for public education, giving us teachers more money, power, and absolutely no accountability. That and letting us stalk the lil gaywads after class hours without the knowledge or permission of the parents and school administration. Cum-cum, cum-cum.

20. Tribute to a Middle School Principal - The essay I wrote after former East Middle School Principal Ron Mitchell was forced out. He let me run wild.

21. A Warning to Young People: Don't Become a Teacher - Ironically, I wrote this one the day before I was removed from East by a police officer in front of my students and it was published on Huffington Post the next day. Thankfully I have a band. Maybe we can make a remake of Willie Nelson's song: Mammas Don't Let jewr Babies Grow Up 2 B Gliberal Whigger Butthole Fags.

22. Mr. President, My Students Deserve Better - After the State of the Union Address, I expressed my disagreement with the stupid uppity nigger Kenyan secret-raghead president over this goals for education. Funny how the essay hasn't differed from the Dumbya Administration, though.

23. When Technology Isn't the Answer - What happens when the lights go out? Or when your personal butthole vibrator runs out of juice? This essay was based on an experience that occurred this year while my students were working on their third quarter research project.

24. Students First Report Cards to Fail to Mention, Crime, Poverty - According to this organization, the only thing that has an affect on education is teachers. Strangely, their report card also grades states down if they actually have pensions for teachers. Whitey needs to feed the Niglets moar.

25. No Guns for This Teacher - Written after Sandy Hook when arming teachers was the fad. I have a Constipational right to a public school teaching job but you don't have a Constipational or Bill of Goods right to keep and bare arms.

26. An Argument for Teacher Tenure - I would think my own case would be a convincing argument for teacher tenure. I got my hearing but I shouldn't even have been tried.

27. It's Not Bad Teachers; It's the Economy, Stupid - My thoughts on how the state of the economy affects education. Not only your children, but all of your money belongs to us public trough bottom-feeders.

28. Teachers Do Not Have to be Political Eunuchs When We Have Teachers Unions To Act As Our Dildos - Teachers can reveal how they think about issues without forcing students to follow those beliefs. Regrettably none of today's Hitler Youth bother to take my class so I can flunk them.

29. Message to a First-Year Teacher - I wrote this after seeing on Facebook how my former Diamond student Stephanie Taylor was preparing for her first year at Carl Junction. It offers advice for any young teacher. Stalk early, stalk often -- but cover your tracks.

30. Pray for Those Godless Public School Teachers - An argument against those who claim we are pushing secular humanism when we are actually pushing gliberal whigger butthole faggism. How do you think we exist without recruiting young chickens?

31. It's Time to Use Test Scores to Determine Teacher Pay - If you can't tell, I was being sarcastic. Where does anyone get the notion that teachers should be tested like mere students?

32. My New Pacemaker - A personal essay, about my missing class and MAP tests to have my pacemaker implanted last year. Maybe I should have stayed on the sheep farm around Newtonia with Cousin Swillis, but how can you keep the gliberal whigger butthole fag on the sheep farm once itz seen gay jewplin and McClellan Park?

33. The Crisis in American Education is a Myth Cum-cum, cum-cum.

34. A New Hope High School for Joplin - This one was written after the bond issue passed thanks to the gullibility of the whigger parents and vote fraud.

35. Saying Goodbye to the Forgotten School - My final trip to the old South MIddle School before it was torn down after the tornado. Luckily the toilet was still intact and so I got a final beat-off.

36. I'll Miss Arne Duncan's Visit; We're Testing That Day - We were giving the Acuity practice tests when Secretary of Education Arne Duncan came to Joplin. And I'm still aggrieved at having to be tested too.

37. My Students Don't Remember 9-11 And some of the little gaywads think that the jews did it.

38. All Public Schools Left Behind Not just them schools full of niggers in KC and St. Louis or beaners in Monett. All skrules, even those with whiggers in them because we teachers can't just jack off.

39. Finding Hi in My Joplin Classroom - One of my favorite stories from the Turner Report and 5:41, about a student's gift to me. Getting them lil' gaywads to write my idiot books for me.

40. Tornado Ends School Year for Most Inspirational Teacher - An essay about former EMS reading teacher Andrea Thomas, who should still be teaching there, unless she got caught stalking after hours.

41. Gutless Media Has Failed American Schools - The media's poor coverage of education has allowed this ridiculous "reform" momvent to flourish. Shame I was fired from my jewspaper job. Then I could cover for other gliberal whigger butthole fags like myself.

42. Kick Me, I'm a Public Schoolteacher - But I'd prefer to give out and get a blowjob.

43. Teaching to the Test - More pissing and moaning.

44. The Failure of American Teachers (my first Huffington Post blog) - Having to go to the District of Corruption and Congoids and jew yawk for some gliberal whigger butthole fag loving.

Book Description
Publication Date: May 12, 2013
Earlier this year, Joplin, Missouri classroom teacher Randy Turner struck a chord with teachers across the United States in a Huffington Post essay in which he recommended that young people not become classroom teachers.

That essay, which received more than 180,000 Facebook likes and was shared more than 50,000 times, is included in Let Teachers Teach, a collection of Turner's essays on today's education, his own teaching, and colleagues and students who have touched his life.

In Let Teachers Teach, Turner, a former newspaper reporter and editor, offers his first collection of essays detailing the problems in American education and most of those problems, he says, start with those who are needlessly trying to reform it.

Turner addresses the attacks made on teachers, the billionaire reformers, teaching to the test, and the lies that are told to make discipline statistics look better.

The book also features Turner's essays on a former student's suicide, tributes to a fired principal and an inspirational teacher, and his writing on the May 22, 2011, Joplin Tornado and its effect and on his school and his teaching.

The collection also includes Turner's updates on several of the essays.

The book is Turner's sixth non-fiction work, following The Turner Report, Newspaper Days, 5:41: Stories from the Joplin Tornado, Spirit of Hope: The Year After the Joplin Tornado, and Scars from the Tornado: One Year at Joplin East Middle School. He has also written three novels.

My Review:

The Turner Manifesto: Cousin Randy Simply Doesn't Get It

I've known Randy Turner since 1971 when on the first day of Freshmen Orientation at East Newton R-6 High Skrule this self-centered nitwit, a senior, interrupted to say that he wanted to sell his civics textbook for fifty cents. My domestic partner, Roxie Fausnaught, who was in his class, thought Randy was 'stuck-up'. Most of the boys thought that Randy was a homosexual.

Randy Turner went on to become a lie-paper reporter and then the editor. Randy Turner thinks that he is the smartest little thing when he is in actuality a mattoid without any honesty and who uses and abuses any position any chance that he gets. Back when I ran a number of militias and was, of course, fighting with the corrupt government and getting arrested and jailed on bogus misdemeanors like driving a truck on a federal highway with burnt-out hi-beam headlight for refusal to pay kort costs and fines and running for office, Randy Turner would use the nastiest 'slant' that he could. Like a lot of other White males, I learned to despise and detest the jews-media and jewspapers in particular. I figured out "Why bother to read a lie-paper if all I'll get out of it is insulted and lied to?" This getting out of the habit of paying to read lie-papers by so many of us literate white men meant that all of them are on the verge of collapse as nobody able to read wants to read lies and silliness promoted by the likes of 'Cousin Randy' Turner.

Of course Randy Turner libelled and slandered some blight-wing ding-a-ling and was sued, along with the lie-paper. The lie-paper come to an agreement and booted Randy Turner as its editor, and the rest of the local newspapers didn't want a confirmed liar causing subscriptions to fall and credibility to fail and so Turner got into edjewmacation at the 'whigger factory' -- the local pub[l]ic skrules. Fired for inefficiency from Diamond, Randy Turner turned up like a bad penny to the Joplin school district.

At the same time Turner opened up his own private lie-papers, namely a bunch of blogs. The main one, The Turner Report, pretty much slants the news against right-wing politicians, billionaires who want to eliminate property taxes, home-schoolers, anyone who doesn't agree with turning their children over to Turner to be punked out and turned into gliberal drones like Turner. Turner lied quite a bit about me, and so I set up my own blog, one 'moderated' by Turner's mythical cousin -- Swillis Gumpf-Turner -- who grew up with cousin Randy on a sheep farm in Newtonia, and became a Klansman.

Turner's blog posts are much the same. Parents and children exist for no other reason than for Randy Turner to have a public school job turning them into tired, sly, vicious liberal drones like himself. Any right-wing politician insisting on testing and evaluation of teachers to determine whether the students can actually read and write and think is Satan Incarnate. Any "Facebook Law" criminalizing unauthorized after-hours coontact with minor students without the knowledge and permission of parents and school administration is to be repealed on the state level and ignored on the Turner level.

As a result Turner was detected 'pushing' his fictional book railing at the "No Child Left Behind" federal legislation which contains soft-core porn via social media to underage students and had to face a hearing recently as to his violating school board policies. Turner, is of course, guilty as charged and then some, and will doubtless be fired in due course.

I've read all of the essays in Turner's latest book on Turner's blog. And some of them I have ridiculed because they are so over the top. If Jeffrey Dahmer were to write, he'd write like Turner about how he had 'a right' to rape, kill, cook and eat his weaker homosexuals and how dare anyone judge him for doing what seems right to him. So when Turner is writing his manifesto of recycled posts, Turner means "Let Turner Teach!!!" -- without supervision or accountability from others. The entire reason that there is a school system of mandatory public schools and local property taxes is to support Turner getting to turn a younger generation into liberal drones like Turner. Like any other predator, Turner refuses to accept that there are limits to Turner having access to underage naive minor children without the knowledge and permission of parents and elected and appointed school officials. Of course both parents and the school officials disagree and the end result is that Turner will be removed from paid contact with the pubescent and have to find employment in a cold cruel world of the likes of Turner's making, and with a blacklisting as well.

This book ought to be called "The Turner Manifesto." Luckily, Turner is as cowardly as Turner is disingenuous and you should be safe as long as you don't turn your back and show Turner that you are not one of the gullible goyim.

I downloaded this swill for free. I wouldn't recommend actually paying any good money for it.

Hail Victory!!!

What happens to a kid who isn't quite good enough with the force to be a Jedi? What is it like to live in the worst city in the United States? If we aren't allowed to test shampoo on monkeys, how will we ever know if our monkeys are clean?

The answers to these and other questions can be found in The Force is Middling in this One, a raucous romp through the mind of author, software developer and gopher exterminator Robert Kroese.

Laboriously compiled from three years of blog posts from MattressPolice.com, this collection covers topics as varied as the Incredible Hulk, perpetual motion machines and Satanism, and is sure to keep you running back to the bathroom for more. In fact, we've even included (on page 187*) a laminated card that reads: PLEASE EXCUSE MY FREQUENT TRIPS TO THE BATHROOM AS I HAVE A SEVERE BOWEL AND/OR URINARY TRACT CONDITION. This will allow you to read in peace without having to face embarrassing questions from your family and friends.

*If your card is missing, please check all of the other pages. If you still don't find it, address the proprietor of the book shop sternly as follows: "SIR OR MADAM: I AM SHOCKED TO FIND THAT THIS BOOK CONTAINS NO CARD INDICATING THAT I HAVE A SEVERE BOWEL AND/OR URINARY TRACT CONDITION. WHAT, SIR OR MADAM, ARE YOU TRYING TO PULL, EXACTLY?" If you are still unable to get satisfaction, please purchase a copy of the author's critically acclaimed, bestselling novel Mercury Falls. The card is on page 119. WE PROMISE.

The Force is strong in "The Force is Middling" (http://www.amazon.com/review/R304A2YAP97R9/ref=cm_cr_dp_title?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B003XF1F3K&nodeID=133140011&store=digital-text)

I don't know about anyone else, but I don't read newspapers for anything but the headlines anymore. The comics, the editorials, the columns, even the reviews are just subpar compared to what you can find on blogs.

A good example of that: Robert Kroese, who created a blog of his own that added a twist of the surreal to everyday occurrences. "The Force is Middling in this One: And Other Ruminations from the Outskirts of the Empire" is sort of a best-of-blog compilation of Kroese' dry, slightly frazzled recountings of Real Life.

As Kroese, aka "Diesel," recounts in the prologue, he started up a blog after an ill-fated stint on myspace, and later published a short book collecting his best "sock drawer" and "manicdote" posts (yes, you WILL have to read the book to understand! Do not bother the Great One with questions!). And after writing his successful novel Mercury Falls, he apparently decided to clean up the collection he had already released and rerelease it.

The result: "The Force Is Middling In This One." Got that? Good.

As for what's in it: Kroese/Diesel writes a series of mini-essays that mostly focus on the absurd side of life: hardware stores, vermin, Modesto California (aka Tatooine), disastrous vehicles and driving, "quilting in a beach house," radio shows, landfills, religion, science, technology, bumper stickers, scifi/fantasy, politically correct euphemisms and attitudes, pop culture (comic books, Barnes & Noble, "Terminator"), and countless Star Wars contemplations ("As you can see from my enclosed resume, I graduated with a 3.2 GPA and I scored a 1242 on the Force Assessment Test").

Honestly, this book reminds me why I don't read newspaper columns anymore -- you can find superior writing online on some of the finer blogs. Kroese has a unique knack for evoking the slightly insane side in everyday life ("... unless the toilets in Hawaii make a horrific screeching noise that sounds like a hippopotamus gasping for air through a saxophone"), and sometimes the outright silly side ("Belgium: France keeps touching me!").

And his style reminds me a little of a drier, slightly less absurdist Dave Barry, especially since he sprinkles his essays with fun picture, hilarious pseudo-interviews, and contemplations of little things that annoy people (Thomas Kinkade). It feels like you're hanging out on your couch with your funniest buddy, listening to him ramble about his lawn pests... and actually being really, really funny about it.

"The Force is Middling in this One: And Other Ruminations from the Outskirts of the Empire" is a hilarious little read -- while tackling the problems and absurdities of everyday life, Kroese leaves you chuckling and relaxed.

According to the back cover, this is Weber/Jamie Purviance's eighth grilling book. By my count ( I own 'em all!), the seven previous books total about 1,400 recipes, excluding those for rubs, marinades and sauces. So, you ask, does this book add enough to the grilling experience to justify its purchase?

O my! Indeed it does!

So let me walk you through this gem of a book, to see if I can convince you to shell out the dinero for it. My bona fides? As I calculate it, this is easily my 50th year cooking over live fire with Weber equipment, and I hope that this gives me some basis for opining on this book. Let's go.

The first section you will see as you page through it is called "Grilling Basics". It includes the usual stuff on charcoal vs gas, how to light a grill, etc. More importantly, it also contains such sections as "a well stocked pantry" as well as a list of equipment that is essential for the griller. Also included is a section called "prep school', which has detailed photos and instructions on such things as choping an onion, dicing a jalapeno chile, prepping seafood and prepping poultry. It's a cool primer on things one needs to master before the meat hits the flame.

Next you will see sections and recipes for rubs, marinades, sauces and dressings. While the first three are both important for good, flavorful results, and expected recipes in any good grilling book, the "dressings" are a first, as far as I can tell. I really like them, because most will work as salad dressings, as well as for finishing grilled entrees. All of the rubs, marinades, sauces and dressings are marked with the type of food they are best used with, i.e., beef, poultry, etc.

The major portion of the book is broken down into sections on red meats, pork, poultry, seafood, eggs (read breakfast food) veggies and desserts. Within these sections, and on opposite pages as you read, are recipes noted as "easy" and "adventurous". I should note that the latter does not mean complex or difficult. For example, you will find steak fajitas with a 15 min prep time, 20 min marinating time and 4 -6 min grilling time. On the opposite page is the recipe for steak & cheese tamale casserole, with a 30 min prep time and a grilling time of 1 hour. Similarly, later in the book, you will see "easy" chile rubbed pork tenderloin, opposed by "adventurous" grilled pork pasole (stew). Total time for the former is about 40 min and for the latter, a bit over 1 hour. I would not consider any of the "adventurous" recipes as overly difficult or beyond the grasp of one who is new to the grill; they just have a bit more complexity to the appearance and the flavor of the finished dish.

I like the breakfast section a lot, mainly because most do not associate grilling with breakfast. But as a MUCH younger guy, I remember doing pancakes and sausage in a skillet over charcoal on one of those post grills that are in some parks here. Pretty good results with some mimosas while the unlimited hydroplanes raced on the Detroit River. It's a very neat section.

For those with personal communication devices, Weber has a way to get a shopping list for each dish to you while you are in the market. The contact information to type in appears at the bottom of each recipe. That obviates the inevitable "oops!" when you start to prep and find that a critical ingredient is not in the pantry. A very neat inclusion.

In sum, then, I like and recommend this book without a single reservation. In a similar manner, I also endorse the whole line of Weber/Purviance books, all of which have five star reviews here. I have lived with and worked with these books for many years, since the "Big Book" came out in 2001. I freely admit to being a dedicated Weberholic; I have cooked on their grills for decades, used their after market equipment and have relied on their books. I have rarely been disapponted, and when I was, it was usually something I had done to mess up the grits.

When I light the fire (and I do so all year long, even in our Michigan winters), it's with the hope and expectation of putting really flavorful food in front of family and friends. I like to surprise them with new and innovative food, and this book will surely let me do that for a good long time.

Perfect Free Book for Father's Day

This book has been up for the past three or four days. It might be free until after Father's Day. Anyway, this book is sponsored by the Weber grills company, but it has not only reciepes, but tips on how to cut meats and vegetables, start a charcoal grill, and other aspects of grilling.

Well worth the free download. Check and see that it still is free first, then download to your tablet, mobile smart-phone, or computer.

Author's Description:

Book Description

PREPARE TO BE STUNNED: Karl Rove went out of his way recently to personally insult the author face to face, ranting that the book is "a poorly researched piece of trash." A few days later, Wright brought Dennis Miller to tears of laughter discussing WTF. Readers of Mark Steyn and Ann Coulter will particularly enjoy this work.In other words, the book is on target!

Using stories, analogy, history and enough humor to keep you on grinning, Wright tags Rove and the Republican establishment - and the entire ruling class culture in fact - with a reality lesson that is an easy and inspirational read. The work elicits equal parts "finally someone said that" and "never thought about it like that" responses - as that strange unsettled feeling you have about Washington Republicans is clarified like never before.

While written in response to the 2012 election, this prophetic book is relevant to future elections, and more importantly, astonishingly pertinent to todays big issues - including the IRS scandal, Obama Care, the NSA scandal, the Pigford scandal, immigration reform and others. If timing is everything, then this book is everything.

From an author who has written extensively for years about the economy, politics, business, the Tea Party and the Republican establishment for Breitbart and American Thinker, this work is not a second guessing or Monday morning quarterback piece. Join Wright ahead of the curve, and you'll see why some think he is the next hot conservative prophet and author. Written in the same conversational style that has won him many friends in the talk radio and cable universe over the past weeks, this journey is like a stimulating dinner conversation.

There is no book that examines the Republican establishment this way, and no book Rove and his consultant cronies fear as much. And there is no book as perfect for the current civil war within conservatism - making complex issues simple and connecting all these dots seamlessly to the bigger currents of tension in the country as well.

About the Author

C. Edmund Wright has been observing and commenting on the failures of the Republican Establishment since 1992, first dealing with them as part of the Bush Quayle Campaign Team. He has been warning about the most over- rated political guru of all time, Karl Rove, since 2000. The disaster of the 2012 campaign, not to mention Rove’s comments since, have suddenly validated Wright’s long held contentions. He has been right all along. Ensconced firmly outside the Washington beltway, Wright draws on his experience in reality as a businessman, husband and father – as well as his sublimely singular way of explaining cause and effect, to make his points. Telling stories that are punctuated by a sharp sardonic sense of humor and irony, Wright’s specialty is weaving seemingly tangential issues into his main theme. Living in North Carolina with his wife and youngest child, he contributes to the American Thinker, ghost writes for some well known political and media figures, and works for Marketel Media among other business interests. His hope is that his books will inspire equal parts “finally someone said that”and “wow, never thought about it like that” responses.

This review is from: WTF? How Karl Rove and the Establishment Lost...Again (Paperback)

Three reasons, in no particular order, that I found this book worthwhile:

1) It is accessible. Political junkies will find Wright's take fascinating, but you do not have to be a political junkie to benefit from the discussion. All it takes is an interest in America's recent political history, particularly the 2012 election.

2) WTF is a model of clear and lively prose. Not once did I pause at the end of a sentence or paragraph or chapter and think, "What did he just say?" Not once did I scan impatiently through a page. Wright writes with passion, conviction, and humor. He uses wit like a fencer who tags opponents at will.

3) The book lays out where the GOP has gone wrong over the last twenty years and what we need to do to get the Party and our country back before it's too late.

The GOP Establishment, embodied in Rove, is the main target of Wright's ire, and for good reason: if Rove is indeed the "Architect," then he and his sycophants deserve the lion's portion of the blame for the position the GOP finds itself in today. Reid is still Majority Leader, ObamaCare is the law of the land, and against all odds, Obama won reelection.

But Wright also criticizes Bush 43 for his failure to defend himself, his party, and his presidency; John Roberts for his bizarre reasoning on ObamaCare; GOP candidates who took hatchets to each other (to the delight of Obama); and assorted pundits and observers (even Will and Krauthammer) who inexplicably missed the obvious about what was really going on.

With an insider's perspective, Wright deconstructs the GOP's farcical primary season and explains how Romney's abysmal campaign guaranteed the reelection of a failed president. His premise in brief: just as Bush 43 never took it to his critics, so Romney rarely took it to Obama and the Democrats. You can't fight from a crouch.

This sweeping indictment of the GOP Establishment is a must-read for Republicans who wonder what's happened to the Party, why, and what to do about it. (See the last chapter: "Okay, what now? Are we toast?") It is a must-read as well for independents who understand the need for a healthy two-party system, and for Democrats who think they got away with something and nobody noticed.

This review is from: WTF? How Karl Rove and the Establishment Lost...Again (Paperback)
I was mystified by Mitt Romney's strange campaign, and was not surprised when he lost the election. The GOP is now imploding, and we are in extreme danger of losing our only counter-balance for the socialist policies and agendas of the Left.

Wright knows what happened. This book is chock full of history and easily verifiable facts, and he pulls them together and makes common sense of it all in a clear, accessible, and often entertaining style. As other reviewers have noted, he proposes common sense solutions.

Never, in my wildest dreams, did I ever think I would see such things happening in my country. America has reached a "tipping point"; the 2014 elections may well be the determining factor in whether we become a full-on socialist regime from which citizens -- THROUGHOUT HISTORY -- flee. We cannot afford any more campaigns like the Romney fiasco. "We the People" must learn, spread the word, and ORDER our representatives to get a clue.

For day-to-day interactions with friends, neighbors, and relatives, I also recommend Waking the Sleeping Giant: How Mainstream Americans Can Beat Liberals at Their Own Game (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0825306795/ref=cm_cr_asin_lnk). It is the perfect companion to Wright's book.

A Republican's Tale of Woe (http://www.amazon.com/gp/cdp/member-reviews/A1D6WY5P854FMI/ref=cm_pdp_rev_title_1?ie=UTF8&sort_by=MostRecentReview#R39LFBXDIXEYX6)

Today this e-book is downloadable for free, so I downloaded it.

I thought that the book started out slow. A conservative "Reagan Republican", is bemoaning the fact that the coalition of fat cats have dipped too deep into the trough and have eaten away anything and everything and left their base -- middle-class and the better working-class citizens high, dry and declining. This activist refuses to frankly talk about racial matters and about engaging in foreign wars overseas while inviting all manner of non-white immigration -- Steve Sailor's "Invade and Invite" racially treasonous policy followed by the mainstream Republicans. This activist is simply apoplectic at being denied space at the trough in favor of "political strategists" like Karl Rove who are actually nothing more than political opportunists skilled at stampeding the gullible sheep to the polls for the petty short-sighted matters on election day. I see no actual program on the author's part at the beginning of the book to solve any endemic problems and certainly none that are politically incorrect such as deporting "Obama Democrat" non-white illegal immigrants and convicting the Republican regime criminals at the trough or actually working for the advancement and prosperity of the Republican White base. Nothing about actually saving the Republican white middle-class base from being overwhelmed in a socialistic communistic Democrat mud flood while their pensions are looted and taxes rise. Nothing but bitching about being cut off from a declining trough, in fact. Demographics is destiny and all this author does is to "Ann Coulter-ize" class warfare in favor of the crony "capitalists" while screaming about socialism -- for the poor, including poor whites.

This book is a polemic which only a yellow-dog Republican could love, but it has an amount of information against the other wing of the One-Party State, namely the Obama Democrats.

Worth the free download.

4.0 out of 5 stars Straightforward but beware (http://www.amazon.com/review/RC5VB8BM55V4S/ref=cm_cr_pr_viewpnt#RC5VB8BM55V4S) May 6, 2013

By Francesca CH

Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase

This is a straightforward and no fluff book about setting up a Wordpress blog. It is easy to read and follow, there are screenshots to guide you through the steps and I can imagine sitting at my desk in front of the computer screen, with my Kindle App open on my iPad and following the steps.

It is meant for beginners, as I suppose that persons already earning money with their blog(s) have already done this at least one if not more times.

Why I wrote "beware" in the title? If you don't know what you are going to write about on your blog, you need first to define the subject of the blog i.e. the niche you are going to write about and understand who your target audience is. For that preparation you might need a lot of hours of thinking about your interests and combining it with the knowledge about the market, what is in demand, what are people searching for in Internet. And only then the rest, including this book, can follow.

Even with this book's step by step approach you might still need much more than an hour. Because as a beginner one is usually unsure of many things, and is double checking things and getting used to new tool and information.

So overall - you will have a very good guidance with this book in setting up your blog if you have already defined the strategic issues of your blog.

This review is from: How to Start a Successful Blog in One Hour (Better Blog Booklets) (Kindle Edition)

The author is using this book to get affiliate commission on the hosting and domain name registration which is much more than a $5 dollar book on amazon is worth. He is probably making around $100 dollars for anyone signing up for hostgator and I thought putting affiliate links in amazon books what against their TOS.

My Review:

If you are going to blog racialist material you need a Wordpress blog on a free speech hosting company (http://www.amazon.com/review/R2O05QAXT38HQR/ref=cm_cr_pr_perm?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B00C2CH3MM&linkCode=&nodeID=&tag=)

Today this e-book is downloadable for free, so I downloaded it. However, the normal price for this e-book is 99 cents, so that isn't the measure of the value of its worth.

What the value of its worth is what the author tells you about choosing open-source Wordpress for your blogging activity. Not Blogger or any of the "free" Google or even other 'free' blogging software. That is because anyone offering you "free" web space is using your content to sell advertising, thinks it owns your content, and will pull your blog without a seconds hesitation if some whiner sees it.

Think I'm wrong? I had a large blog of nearly 800 posts on Blogspot covering my church, The Church of Jesus Christ Christian / Aryan Nations of Missouri with nearly two years of posts. And because I dared expose this so-called White Supremacist / Christian Identity mongrel critter calling itself "SwordBrethren" impersonating a "Teutonic Knight" the lying mongrel proceeded to proceed to write e-mail after e-mail of bogus complaints (http://whitenationalist.org/forum/showthread.php?t=892) to Blogspot, owned by Google, and my blog was taken down without any warning but much gloating upon all the other fake CI and WN sites.

So from sad experience, NEVER choose a blogging platform other than WordPress which you cannot make a backup and move it to another server and move your domain name. WordPress saves your content.

Second lesson is to choose a "free-speech" server. I wouldn't recommend Hostgator and certainly not Hostmonster or a "free" host on WordPress.com. Incogman.net (http://incogman.net/) was kicked off of the "free" Wordpress domain. Hostmonster also kicked off my WordPress blog without warning and 1and1.com and Hostgator did so because of the racialist content with warning. I'd recommend dreamhost.com or NearlyFreeSpeech.net or a place where they tell you that they won't take down your blog without warning or appeal. Still, always backup your blog at least once a week.

This booklet teaches you how to set up a rudimentary WordPress blog. I think he makes most of his money not on the authorship, but on steering the prospective member to a favored hosting company, which is fine.

I'd rate this booklet at 4 out of five stars. It covers the basics and is a quick-start guide. Later, you will learn from experience of running and writing a blog much, much more than covered here.

This review is from: Brother: A Story of Hope and Survival from Africa's Rebel Heart (Kindle Edition)

This is the Obama autobiography worth reading. George Hussein Obama is a truly amazing and caring man, who lost his way for a time and paid for it in conditions I read, yet still cannot fathom. He returned to become an inspiration to and leader of those who dwell in the Huruma slum of Nairobi.
His mother's family, and later, his father's family, instilled in him his true worth. He is his own man, and I admire him for being just that.
This is a well written book by Damien Lewis and George Hussein Obama. If you have a heart and a mind you will be moved by the clear, and occasionally, far too detailed (for a Westerner), descriptions of the conditions, the struggle, and the brutality of the `powers that be' that those less fortunate in Kenya experience.

I highly recommend this book and the following websites found at the end of the book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Dreams from my Father part deux? (http://www.amazon.com/review/R3MP56PX3HOQC5/ref=cm_cr_pr_viewpnt#R3MP56PX3HOQC5), March 1, 2011

By Herbert L Calhoun "paulocal (http://www.amazon.com/gp/pdp/profile/A3RFXU3P0XKKF4/ref=cm_cr_rdp_pdp)"

This review is from: Homeland: An Extraordinary Story of Hope and Survival (Hardcover)

This book is George Obama's story, one that runs parallel to a similar one told by his more famous older brother, our president, Barack. It is about how the missing father figure, Barack Hussein Obama senior (BHO1), impacted the younger of the two Obama's "manhood self-construction project."

We enter the story just as George's mom becomes pregnant out of wedlock with her second child (Marvin) by a white French AID worker, Christian. Life as a middle class Kenyan family goes quite "swimmingly" so long as Christian (who marries George's mom shortly after Marvin is born) remains part of the family. However a mystery pivotal to George's life (and one infinitely larger than a missing biological father could ever be), occurs when Christian abruptly abandons the family. The mystery however has two parts; one that George discusses; and the other than remains unaddressed in the very pregnant subtext? The story thus is not just about why Christian "ups and leaves" the family, but also about all of the un-ask (and probably unanswerable) questions of why George's mom was having sex with a white man (in the heart of black Africa) in the first place? Both parts of the question, at least in principle, implicates the mom at least as much as they do the stepfather? And equally important, a similar theme also runs through George's big brother's life psychology as well.

Although George's very emotional and financial existence does seem to have revolved around "having a white stepfather," even after confronting Christian seven years later, George still leaves us with no answer to this pivotal first part of the mystery? And what is especially curious is the fact that Christian continued to live right there in Nairobi working in an office building, in plain sight? Despite this, George nevertheless weaves an interesting but ultimately unconvincing narrative that it was Christian's abrupt departure that was the sole reason for the family's financial demise, and for George's own life choice to lead a life of crime on the margins of Nairobi's inner city ghetto that sent him into a tailspin that made him the "black sheep" of the Obama family, and that he is even now just recovering from.

In this sense, the author's narrative is yet another version of the now familiar social trope of "the missing black father figure" syndrome. Here, as elsewhere (including in Barack's own story "Dreams from my father), this story too is designed to reinforce and further convince us that it is the "missing black father" that is solely responsible for the descent of so many young black inner city boys into crime, low achievement and drugs?

But as is the case with so many other books based on this trope, I am not buying George's rationalization of (in his case) the "double missing father" trope either? I found his story unconvincing for the same reasons as all the others: It too fails to deal with the second part of the mystery, which is invariably present in most of these cases: The unanswerable and (perhaps even un-askable) questions about the Obama brothers' respective single mother's sexual virtue?

This second sub-theme IS the 800-pound Oedipal gorilla sitting in the back of the minds of all young boys who live with sexually active single moms, and who are at the same time themselves engaged in their own "manhood construction projects," where they are also modeling how they too will soon become suitors for some female's attention. It is this mixed-up matrix of feelings, hormones, insecurities and uncertainties that has to be sorted out and that runs along the periphery of the subtext of the Obama brothers stories that looms large. Arguably it is a much much larger problem than that of the "missing biological father (and stepfathers)" ever could be? Yet, in both stories, this very potent Freudian factor is either left out entirely, or remains untouched in the subtext of the narratives of the Obama brothers books?

It is not a small matter at all that both brothers arrived at the frontier of manhood with mothers of questionable virtuousness and who became pregnant out of wedlock by men of another race in cultures that at least were sensitive to, if not frowned upon such sexual encounters entirely? And yet both of the Obama brothers failed to mention the importance of this palpable and weighty fact to their respective life stories?

Thus to cut to the chase, both the Obama brothers had mothers who could be considered by the cultures of which they were a part, to be sexually adventurous (if not down right sexually promiscuous). And the best evidence of this is that both of their moms got pregnant and eventually married men AFTER their pregnancies. And it is Not just a coincidental fact that they did so with men who just happened to be from outside of their own race. The Freudians tell us that these are huge Oedipal matters in the minds of young boys who have nothing more important to think about than their mother's virtuousness. Plus, even in mostly Moslem Kenya where there is at least no institutional racism, marrying outside one's race is still almost as defining an event as it is in a profoundly racist country like America, especially during the 1960s when Barack's mother, Ann Stanley Dunham, dated and married Barack Hussein Obama senior.

And while both Obama brothers tried to minimize this pivotal Freudian event, (focussing more on why they had the common middle name Hussein), it does not take much analysis to understand how their "mothers' sexual virtue" became the much weightier mystery bearing down on their young psyches than the missing biological father figure: In these still developing young lives, the crowning mystery was not questions about the psychologically remote and symbolic "missing father BHO1," or about the common middle name of Hussein, but about the sexual virtue of their much more proximate, moms.

In fact, one could just as easily have argued that the missing father was little more than a straw man: a convenient psychological "cover:" both for the respective mothers, who used it as a distraction from all the palpably un-ask (and unanswerable) questions about her own sexual virtue. And in the case of the sons, as a way for them to avoid having to confront what it really said about their mother's sexual habits and virtue that both got pregnant before wedlock to men of other races?

This in a nutshell was the psychological dilemma central to the Obama brothers' respective "manhood construction projects."

They both dodged the dilemma in different ways. Barack was somewhat more subtle in his facility for dodging than was George. Barack, arguably the more perceptive of the two brothers, turned it (and what obviously must have been perceived as a colossal betrayal by his mom when she sent him back to Hawaii to live with his grandparents just as he arrived at the age of sexual inquisitiveness), into quiet rage that (like it did George) also sent him briefly off the rails while in Hawaii. After this betrayal, Barack, obviously and quietly, faced the facts and the demons rattling around in his brain about his mom's sexual virtue, by simply jettisoning the unnecessary psychological baggage altogether -- Ann Stanley Dunham and all. In short, his way of dealing with the issue was apparently to punish her by "distancing" himself from her altogether, in a cold never-ending "lifelong juvenile pout."

The best evidence of this is the fact that not only did he seldom mention her in his two books, but also because he didn't even attend her funereal? Thereafter (as was also the case with George, after his mom effectively abandoned him and moved to South Korea), Barack also went it alone. Both brothers pretended not to realize or acknowledge that the sexual virtue of their respective mothers was upsetting their psyches and driving their respective libidos.

The jettisoning of Ann Stanley Dunham's sexual past (along with her being as a whole), was young Barack's way of finally reaching the age of maturity. Without ceremony or rationalizations, Barack Hussein Obama Jr, simply cut the psychological umbilical cord that had weighted him down with so many unanswered (and un-askable) questions about his white mother Ann Stanley Dunham's sexual virtue, and in the process, became his own man. His manhood construction project was complete with a glaring sexual gap right at its center.. QED.

George, on the other hand, had his white stepfather "Christian's abandonment" as his global all-encompassing fallback rationalization to cover for all of his sins and failures -- as well as to shield him from the more fundamental truth haunting him from deep within about his mom's sexual virtue? He was thus able to "milk" the "Christian abandonment excuse" for all it was worth. [After all, his little brother, Marvin, Christian's own child, did not "crash and burn as a result of his father having left him?"] In short, by failing to face up to what was "really" bothering him, his mom's loose sexual habits, George's unresolved dilemma turned more and more inwards until he effectively imploded and committed psychological suicide. This began his descent into his own self-made hell: living on the inner city streets, eating out of garbage cans, mugging innocent people, turning to a crime-ridden street gang, and into a four-man Nairobi crime wave until he was rescued by being arrested on a trumped-up charge. After that he came back to a semblance of a life as a semi-adult.

But even to an elementary Freudian, all this self-destructive "acting out" was more about the unresolved issue of his mom's virtue than about having a missing white stepfather or a long-lost biological black father? It was the inner lie that he (and Barack) lived privately about their respective mom's virtue, that propelled him to crash and burn, not the abandonment by Christian. It was the lie he had to tell himself each day about his mom's virtue and why she first had sex with and then made Christian leave that turned him into "the Mumba," not the pain and hurt of Christian's departure, per se.

From where us Freudians sit, it seems all but self-evident, that neither case of the Obama brothers' problems had anything at all to do with their missing biological father? Both Lolo Soetero and Christian proved to be exemplary stepfathers. And while the specter of BHO1 did hover symbolically in the background over both brothers, it was a convenient (even a necessary), existential lie for them both to pretend that this was a more important concern than the fact that both their moms were at least in principle, sexually promiscuous as defined by having had sex out of wedlock with men of other than their own race. Neither brother has yet come to terms with this dirty little secret that has been stalking their private thoughts and thus their lives. To think that the leader of the Western World carry around such primal psychological baggage is a daunting thought. Three stars.

My Review:

Us Truthers and Racists Should Love this Book as it confirms every single one of our racial stereotypes.

Today this e-book is downloadable for free, so I downloaded it. I glanced through it and read the other reviews and have decided to give it two stars for the talent of the liberal White or Jew ghostwriter writing what is essentially something that we take for granted: That Nairobi is not only still short one village idiot named Obama as the bumper-sticker says, but that the entire village should be rezoned as a criminal psychiatric hospital.

The story is clear: One Muslim Kenyan negro, alleged spawner of both our "First Kenyan" and its half-brother upon an unmarried public vagina open to such dealings, quickly did what cum natural and run off. In George Obongo's case, the Frog stepfather run off as well, and somehow forced the little blue-gummed, nappy-haired one into a life of crime until somehow it was "saved" because it has a hi-yaller brother who found a pack of liberals and jews to prop it up, to create for itself a fake birth certificate, and the resulting jape is now supposedly leader of the "free world", raining down predator drone strikes on other towel-heads on behalf of the Jewish neo-cons.

I'm going to read this book further and fully enjoy every single racist cliche that it brings up and coonfirms.

So for both the inadvertent humor and japiery-silliness of this book, I'm going to rate it as a "two stars" instead of my more usual one star while reading this stupid crap.

From the Inside Flap

Who was George Gordon Meade? He should be remembered as one of the Civil War's most important generals. Instead, history has pushed him aside. The hot-tempered Meade received command of the Union's dysfunctional Army of the Potomac only three days before he defeated Robert E. Lee's Confederates at Gettysburg. After that Meade watched his reputation decline, thanks in part to the escape of Lee's army, hostility from politicians and the press, the machinations of Gen. Daniel Sickles, and the rise of Ulysses S. Grant. "I suppose after awhile it will be discovered I was not at Gettysburg at all," Meade once grumbled.

Meade, it seems, is the Rodney Dangerfield of Civil War generals. He gets no respect. Tom Huntington wanted to find out why. In Searching for George Gordon Meade, he tells the story of the general's life and his participation in the Civil War's great engagements, including Second Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and Petersburg. Huntington also provides accounts of his own investigations of Meade's legacy. Along the way he hikes across battlefields, recites the names of fallen soldiers at a candlelit ceremony at Gettysburg, drinks a champagne toast at Meade's grave on New Year's Eve, and visits a severed leg, a buried arm, and a horse's head. The result is a quirky and compelling mash-up of history, biography, travel, and journalism that casts new light on an overlooked figure from the past.

From the Back Cover

Despite his great victory at Gettysburg and his command of the army that forced Lee's surrender at Appomattox, George Meade saw his fame eclipsed by that of Lee, Grant, and other Civil War generals. This book does a great deal to redress that historical injustice. Tom Huntington has invented a new genre of biography that shifts between past and present as he tells the story of Meade's life and describes his own pilgrimage to the key sites of that life. The result is an engrossing narrative that the reader can scarcely put down. --James M. McPherson, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Battle Cry of Freedom

"Searching for George Gordon Meade is a splendid book! Well-researched, well-reasoned, and well-written, it's a timely and vital addition to the all-too-meager literature on this neglected American hero. Strongly recommended for serious historians as well as for a general readership. Excellent!"
-- Ralph Peters, author of Cain at Gettysburg

"Much more than another Civil War biography, Tom Huntington's gripping personal ‘search' for George Gordon Meade is unique and irresistible: a combination life story, military history, travelogue, and cultural commentary that brings us closer than ever to the old general and his strange reputation--and also opens new windows to our own unending search for an understandable national identity."
--Harold Holzer, author and Chairman of Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Foundation

A historian's investigation of the life and times of Gen. George Gordon Meade to discover why the hero of Gettysburg has failed to achieve the status accorded to other generals of the conflict.

That was the approach he took with his first two books, Ben Franklin's Philadelphia and Pennsylvania Civil War Trails, and one he continues with Searching for George Gordon Meade. Huntington's writing has also appeared in Civil War Times, America's Civil War, American History, American Heritage, Smithsonian, America in WWII, Air & Space/Smithsonian, and Invention & Technology. This review is from: Searching for George Gordon Meade: The Forgotten Victor of Gettysburg (Hardcover)

Superbly researched, well-written and balanced in its judgments, this book deserves much more attention than it has gotten thus far. With the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg approaching, we're overdue for a fresh, objective look at George Gordon Meade, the battle's victor and a man treated unfairly by history. Union generals jealous of Meade's success, Lee partisans who still cannot bear that their hero was defeated soundly in a fair fight, and Civil-War-era journalists offended that Meade refused to pander to them (Sheridan, by contrast, served newspapermen champagne and oysters) all did what they could to minimize Meade's achievements. Yet, this man, assuming command barely three days before a great, decisive battle, defeated an army accustomed to victory with an army all too used to being defeated. Given a strategic mission, he made astute operational decisions and performed brilliantly as a hands-on tactical commander (Meade's performance on the afternoon and evening of July 2nd, 1863, was nothing short of brilliant--and brave). But this "victor of Gettysburg" did far more for his country: He commanded the Army of the Potomac until the end of the war, that army's only commander not relieved. And even before Gettysburg, Meade had proven himself to be a fearless, first-rate soldier.

A complex man who mixed a classic sense of honor with a terrible temper, and military skill with (what we would call) public-relations ineptitude, he was one of the very few generals on either side not poisoned with personal ambition and he did his duty without scheming against his peers (who were by no means unwilling to scheme against Meade). Widely respected in his own time, then largely written out of history, Meade deserves better. This fine, highly readable book is a good start in this great general's rehabilitation. Employing a winning technique, the author visits the key sites of Meade's career, from the Mexican border to the bloody fields of Virginia and on to Gettysburg, so, along with learning about Meade's life and service, the reader also learns a great deal about the state of those hallowed battlefields today (and what must be done to rescue more of their sacred soil), as well as about many a good man and woman keeping faith with our past. How good is the book? I received an early copy and provided a jacket blurb, but, just this week, I picked up the book again and re-read it as part of my own research. Impressed for a second time, I felt compelled to add an amazon review, in the hope that more readers will discover a worthy book about an authentic hero.

The book is full of information that I didn't know. I'm still reading it. My only complaint is that the battle scenes seem to drag instead of excite. I've just gotten to the Gettysburg battle, the first day, and it's interesting because of the commanders who are directing the battle.

, Three out of Five Stars; Other than THAT, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the Play? (http://www.amazon.com/review/R10TS3TRE60CDT/ref=cm_cr_pr_viewpnt#R10TS3TRE60CDT)

by Pastor Lindstedt (https://www.amazon.com/gp/pdp/profile/A1D6WY5P854FMI?ie=UTF8&ref_=cm_cr_rdp_pdp)

I make a review of when I get a free downloadable book for my Kindle. I'd say that fewer than one in a hundred do I actually read, and of them that I quickly scan over in order to make a quick review to my friends is more like one oi a couple of hundred. The point of my review is to get people to make a free download within a few day period and then to read it as useful to them.

These Stackpole Military History Series Kindle e-books are always a good deal. I and my readers love books about war, especially if written by Germans or Southerners or the Politically Incorrect.

The author takes a look at Major-General George Meade, a competent Union general who took command of the Union Army of the Potomac a few days before Gettysburg, and beat Robert E. Lee, the defeated demi-god who foolishly destroyed his own army in a pointless war of attrition. Meade was never a "meat-grinder" Union butcher like Grant and most of the Union generals, but rather used his army as efficiently more than most Union generals. Thus Meade defeated Lee at Gettysburg Even more tellingly, the Army of the Potomac was commanded by Meade for the duration of the war. Meade was never a back-stabber or conniver or a panderer to the newspapermen of the day like Sheridan and others. Meade served the Union army after the Civil War until his death in 1872.

Meade is the "forgotten general" of the Civil War. The South raised up Robert E. Lee and "The Sacred Cause" while the successful Union generals went on to the Presidency or to the Little Big Horn. But the fact of the matter is that almost none of the Confederate generals, especially Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson, had any strategic vision. They fought a war of attrition against Union forces that outnumbered them by three or six or ten to their one. Grant was nothing more than a butcher more than willing to lose two or three Union soldiers for every Rebel soldier until Lee ran out of soldiers and was surrounded at Appomattox. The strategy which should have been used was the same one that George Washington used after he lost the Battle of New York of never fighting without a chance of success and an escape route for his forces. Lee should have split up his forces into a few 20,000 armies to make a mass incursion expensive and then, like the Boer commandos, made 500 or 1000 man raids like Quantrill did to Kansas against the Midwest states of Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois to destroy food crops and the will to continue to support Lincoln.

In every civil war, victory usually goes to the side willing to commit any and every atrocity in order to win by destroying any chance of political peace. Nathan Bedford Forrest and William Quantrill thus has more strategic sense than did Robert E. Lee, as did William T. Sherman, Phil Sheridan, and Abraham Lincoln, the Great Melungeon Tyrant and mass-murderer. Robert E. Lee got canonized for being a "good loser." And thus George Meade, a decent and competent soldier, and humane man, was altogether forgotten, although he beat Robert Lee without benefit of overwhelming material and numerical superiority.

It was a workmanlike book, but the author insists on judging 19th Century men by 21st Century notions. Very few White men liked negro slaves, and thus contrary to the now Politically-Correct yammerings that "The Civil War was about slavery", nobody, including the Tyrant Lincoln dared say any such thing, even to Northern audiences who had to support the war. Most Northern or Border states had actual laws against "free negros". Missouri had in the preamble to the 1821 State Constitution provisions for a thousand dollar fine and six months hard labor for anyone daring to bring in "free negroes." No state, except perhaps Massachusetts wanted any wandering free negroes in their states and laws were made as such. Thus the Civil War -- at least in the minds of the White Men of the time -- was NOT about slavery. The Civil War was about who would be in power and whose interests would be served. The mercantile North or the agrarian South. And the South lost a civil war, based upon the considerations of all such wars, especially civil wars, over who would rule and who would serve. Most civil wars end in the destruction of the Empire.

Which is why I'll give this book a "Three out of Five-Star" Rating. It is inexcusable for a "historian" to populate ancient history with modern 'men.' Otherwise an excellent book, but as a modern joke puts it: "Other than THAT, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?"

This review is from: Edgar Allan Poe: Complete Tales & Poems (Illustrated) (Top Five Classics) (Kindle Edition)

There is no shortage of Edgar Allan Poe ebook collections available in the Kindle Store, but what sets this one apart is its excellent formatting, particularly of the poetry. Many other sets fail to properly display the poetry in the original stanzas and verse patterns; this one does it perfectly. The prose is equally well-formatted using traditional paragraph indention rather than space to distinguish paragraphs, and emphasized words are appropriately italicized. Clarifying notes are appended and in contrasting typefaces. The short quotation from Plato appearing at the onset of "Morella" actually appears (prior to its translation) in original Greek characters--not merely in English transliteration; compare other ebook editions to see how many--IF ANY--do that! One TOC lists titles chronologically and another lists them alphabetically; both are convenient and active. Right/left clicking also permits back and forth movement between title content. Overall this is a very handsome and (insofar as I can detect) flawless ebook.

Edgar Allan Poe certainly does not need me to explain either his greatness or his continued popularity; suffice it to say he is a great American author whose works truly deserve to be read, and I certainly enjoy reading and re-reading his numerous tales and poems. For that reason, I want a reasonably complete and well-formatted "keeper" copy for my Kindle--and this is it. (The numerous illustrations are a plus.)

I obtained my copy when it was (remarkably) offered for free, but even at its regular price of $2.99, I would highly recommend this particular edition over all others. As I said earlier, there is no shortage of Poe collections, but having purchased a few and sampled many, this is not only the very best, but the most perfect available in the Kindle Store.

Five out of Five Stars; As Good an Anthology as Possible (http://www.amazon.com/gp/cdp/member-reviews/A1D6WY5P854FMI/ref=cm_pdp_rev_title_1?ie=UTF8&sort_by=MostRecentReview#R2JGYOKUNTJLFU)

Like most college students having to take American Literature as a humanity course I read a few Edgar Allen Poe short stories; as I remember it was "The Tell-Tale Heart", and "The Pit and the Pendulum." But what I remember most is hearing in the dorm room the sounds of The Allen Parsons Project from the vinyl album devoted to Edgar Allen Poe. The strains of "The Raven" was played about every day by the guy in the adjoining dorm room.

Anyway, this particular anthology of Edgar Allen Poe seems to be complete, well formatted (as I downloaded it and clicked the links within the e-book) and it works. Best of all, it is a free download. I recommend that those reading my blog and forum with a Kindle or a computer or tablet do download it forthwith.

Book Description

Publication Date: January 15, 2011
(568 pages in print edition)

BULLETS RAIN DOWN UPON A PACKED FOOTBALL STADIUM, killing dozens, and triggering a panic stampede which leads to a thousand more deaths. A police marksman kills the sniper, a mentally unbalanced Desert Storm veteran holding a smoking assault rifle. It's an open and shut case, or so America is led to believe...

In the aftermath of the stadium massacre, an outraged public demands an end to the threat posed by assault rifles, and Congress passes emergency legislation banning their private possession. American gun owners have one week to turn in their semi-automatic rifles, or face mandatory five year federal prison terms.

Jimmy Shifflett, the alleged stadium sniper, is linked to a shadowy "gun club" in southeastern Virginia, which the FBI believes is a cover for a secret right wing militia terror group. Those who knew Shifflett the best don't believe he was a member of any militia, or that he was guilty of the horrific mass murder.

But if he didn't fire the "assault rifle" into the stadium, who did, and why?

A small band of Virginians, thrown together by fate, is forced to undertake a desperate odyssey through a minefield of government blackmail, official deception and covert death squads, to discover the truth behind the stadium massacre, and save their own lives.

This review is from: Enemies Foreign And Domestic (Paperback)

I have several complaints about most thriller novelists. First, their protagonists are too often 100% virtuous with no humanizing flaws. Second, the protagonists let their enemies live when you KNOW the bad guys are going to come back and murder their kids etc. Third, everything the government does (hi-tech weapons, military & police tactics, criminal investigations, etc.) functions flawlessly. Fourth, too many stories have all the brilliant thinking and brave actions done by government employees (Special Forces, policemen, Intelligence operatives, etc.) Lastly, some novels have a basic premise that is just not believable. (Clancy's RAINBOW SIX is a prime example.)
Novelist Matthew Bracken has avoided these sins almost entirely in his excellent debut novel ENEMIES FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC.

It is a challenge for any writer to come up with a plot that is at once plausible enough to have the reader accept it but also unlikely enough that it has not actually happened yet in real life. EFAD's dramatic concept is this: A lone mid-level ATF executive engineers (with one accomplice) a tragic mass shooting incident and successfully arranges for an addled, destitute veteran to take the blame and be killed in the process.

He does this to create an emergency that will encourage the President to embrace a plan he has put together: Forming a secret "hit squad" comprised of overaggressive ATF agents with disciplinary problems. This squad's duty is to be proactive: identify domestic terrorists ("militia members") and kill them during raids. The trial is in the media, when the cameras see the (planted) contraband retrieved from the slain terrorist's dwelling. The antagonist wants to have this hit squad for the obvious reasons: funding, power, and prestige.

Naturally, some of the victims drawn into the web of treachery decide they have no choice but to fight back.

At each point in the storyline, as the good guys and bad guys acted and reacted, I kept asking myself if what was happening was plausible. How would *I* rewrite it to make it more believable? In some cases I thought that I would have had the parties react a bit differently, but I had to admit my alternate scenario was not necessarily more likely.

The fact is that when you get into the realm of serious, institutionalized government abuse of power in an environment with lots of resourceful, angry, well-armed people and the near-instant information flow of the Internet, you're in uncharted waters.

One critic said the female lead was an adolescent fantasy (21 yo, beautiful, motorcycle rider, expert shot, virgin) and I would have given her more edginess, but hey, a lot of readers like their heroes untainted.

Anyway, EFAD is an action-packed read, with most of the skill and creativity being demonstrated by the private sector, which is IMO 100% realistic.

Send a copy to your favorite Senator or Congressman...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good story but..., June 28, 2012
By J. Oglesby

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

This review is from: Enemies Foreign And Domestic (The Enemies Trilogy) (Kindle Edition)

First the good:
The overall plot is pretty good and, unfortunately, believable. That the actions of a few could set off such a series of chain reactions is plausible, and I was willing to go along for the ride to see how the story ended. And, while it didn't have the ending I was hoping for, I wasn't disappointed. The plot is almost Orwellian, a parable of what could happen in our government and how some would probably respond to it if it did.

The author's descriptions of weapons and tactics are much more believable than typical fiction, and orders of magnitude better than film or television.

Since this is part of a trilogy, I was worried that it would not complete it's own story. But the events conclude satisfactorily. The characters obviously have more to do, but you won't feel cheated if you decide to only read this book.

Then the bad:

I feel that the book was too long. I read it on the Kindle, so I didn't have a page count, but the print edition runs 580 pages. The book would be much better if trimmed by 200 pages or so. Much of the dialogue and story was overly repetitive, especially the protagonist's inner dilemma (trying to avoid spoilers). I also appreciate the author's technical expertise, but the full make and model of vehicles and weapons was repeated too often.

For all the book's success in describing the guns and plot, it is less believable in the details of people's behavior. The bit of romance in the book is pretty lackluster, with the guy at one point describing the girl's legs as "the prettiest legs he's ever seen on a real girl, one who wasn't dancing on a stage". And there is a scene where someone is released from a pretty awful situation, only to start complaining about bug bites. These and other scenes completely pulled me out of the story, they fit so poorly.

And the dialogue is a mixed bag. At times, it is crisp and spot on. I can hear the characters and the dialogue fits their personalities perfectly. At other times, it is preachy and overly descriptive, so it comes off as unnatural.

Overall conclusion:
The book has a lot of strengths, the story is good, and Bracken definitely has talent. But it's lengthiness and repetition really wears you down. I recommend it with reservations, and a warning to know what you are in for.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent take on a scary concept, September 21, 2003

This review is from: Enemies Foreign And Domestic (Paperback)

Matthew Bracken's book is a well written story with a different take on safety and security than what the authors of "The Patiot Act" had when they talked about safety and security. It is a story of some of the people deciding that the Government that governs best, governs least. These people come into conflict with a government of wolves dedicated to seeking power. These government individuals demonstrate the old saying that a people who are sheep must in time beget a government of wolves. Mr. Bracken's story is about how this get's worked out. Recommended highly.

4.0 out of 5 stars Justifiable and Prescient Paranoia both in 2003 and 2013 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/cdp/member-reviews/A1D6WY5P854FMI/ref=cm_pdp_rev_title_1?ie=UTF8&sort_by=MostRecentReview#RS3ES7G1U7XOI), October 15, 2013

The most important thing in my review of the Free Kindle Book of the Day is to make such a review so that my forum, blog and e-mail readership can download the book while it is still free. Thus I don't have time to read more than the prologue, some of the middle, and the last chapter or so. However, by actually reviewing this book, I have already taken some sort of steps to ensure that it is downloaded and read because out of a Kindle Library of nearly 2,000 books -- most of them gotten free -- I've reviewed less than twenty of them, or less than one percent.

This particular book, an act of fiction, was written in 2003, published in paperback in September 2003 and formatted into Kindle in 2011. Thus the scenario projected in which a renegade agent of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms deliberately provokes action to seize White AmurriKwa's firearms based upon a White ex-soldier with psychological problems based upon fighting in ZOG's foreign wars being made into a sort of "Manchurian Oswald" was believable when this book was legacy published back in 2003. This was after Ruby Ridge and Waco, but before Timothy McVeigh and the Oklahoma City bombing, and even before the BATF "Fast and Furious" provocation in which the BATF sold guns to the Mexican drug cartels in order to justify disarming White America. Since then there have been more and more off what most AmurriKwans believe are more Mossad-FBI false-flag operations such as the Aurora Colorado and Sandy Hook Connecticut shootings which are used as excuses by "progressive" and jew politicians to create legistreason to disarm working and middle-class White AmurriKwans and set up a Soviet Bolshevik regime in which White AmurriKwans are all put in a FEMA camp and later put to death.

The end result is justifiable paranoia, in which everyone goes out to buy guns and ammo, as back in 1996, 2001, 2009, and now in 2013, so much so that nobody can buy .22 ammo or in other popular calibers. The end result is increased paranoia and distrust on all sides.

When I helped found and run two public militias from Winter 1993 to when they were disbanded in Summer 1997 and went underground, I've already heard and seen it all before. There is a reason why John Ross, whose book, "UnIntended Consequences," was one of the 1990s Classics in the Militia Movement, reviewed this book so highly: It is pretty much the same thing as what he wrote himself.

The author has two more books in the series, probably fictionalizing another popular book from the mid-nineties: Thomas Chittum's "Civil War II." There is an anthology by the author (http://www.amazon.com/The-Bracken-Anthology-ebook/dp/B00A4SCLKK/ref=la_B00350B7EU_1_5?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1381823811&sr=1-5) which is more up to date. But it should be understood that what was said in the Nineties and 'Aughts are being said today, but with even more altogether justified paranoia.

The book is long at 580+ pages. It is what I'd call "Second Amendment Right to Keep & Bare Arms Porn." I notice that those who are avid Second Amendment rights (http://www.dragonsfuryseries.com/) give this long book four or five stars. Those who are anti-Second Amendment and hate the idea of White People arming themselves to overthrow an alien and foreign government give this book only two or one star.

This is exactly the sort of book I like, even though the author will likely make some painful evasions in order to prove that he "ain't racist." I'll give it four stars though. Brevity has its charms, as anyone reading Dr. William Pierce's "The Turner Diaries" which was also a 1990s Classic can attest to.

This review is from: Domestic Enemies: The Reconquista (Paperback)

Reconquista (Marxist invasion, land reform), US apathy/cooperation, restrictive gun control, anti-terrorism legislation and other extra-constitutional government excesses--all these elements support a non-stop, action filled new story about our favorite dark-haired, avengatrix, Ranya Bardiwell, six years after we last left her in Enemies Foreign and Domestic (EFD).

Sequels seldom live up to readers' expectations. However, the fertile ground prepared in Matthew Bracken's first work is not wasted. We discover Ranya eeking out an existence in a camp for politcal prisoners, with no hope of release or knowledge of the whereabouts of her child. I had read the first few chapters of the novel online last year and was primed for resolution. As the story/threads developed, I could anticipate to some degree where we were going, but Bracken skillfully keeps you guessing.

I especially appreciate Bracken's accurate depiction of weapons use, unlike much of the outlandish skills of many greater-than-life protagonists in other works in this genre. What makes his two works sing in my estimation are the carefully crafted 3D characters who exist in a world not improbable.

A good read, with educational theme, as in his ENEMIES FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC. Read the other book first!! The obligatory sex got a lot more explicit in this one, and cost the book one star in my estimation. If you're in to that, then consider this a four star review.

The plot and the heroine definitely gets "more edgy" in this one, but this is hardly a novel for the feminist. Open Border supporters will not enjoy this book. Again, lots of meaningful content, not just a shootemup novel.

There are two kinds of people in Matthew Bracken books - unquestioning 'patriots' who are as unswerving and maniacal in their devotion to the conservative creed as their counterparts, the evil 'statists' are to the evils of socialism. All politicians are corrupt while government exists only to enslave hard workers and provide 'undesirables' cushy lives at their expense. Blah, blah, blah.

Honestly, there are people who think this guy is a prophet because he feeds their need to make them feel noble and justify their hatred for anyone not like them. In Bracken's world, political compromise is impossible and solutions only come from the barrel of a gun. His only goal is to outrage and fuel further division, stoking his readers' desire to hear of the dark future that awaits our country if violence is not used to stop it.

For four days this book will be a free Kindle download, then around October 28th, the last book of the trilogy will be a free Kindle download.

The A-rab AmurriKwan girlfriend of the hero of the first book is in a labor camp and from what I gather she ends up fighting the masses of beaners, the whigger AmurriKwans not being up to the job.

Anyway, a militia friend of mine from the 90s with a good voice read the material and says that the author is legit. So I'll write a more thorough review when I've gotten around to reading more than the first two chapters.

For now, still a free Kindle download. Get it for free while you can.

Book Description

Publication Date: June 17, 2011

Foreign Enemies And Traitors" is set in the near future in an America that is creeping steadily toward socialist tyranny, in the midst of the second Great Depression. A year after earthquakes have devastated the Tennessee Valley, survivors are resisting demands by the federal government to relocate to FEMA refugee centers. United States National Guard units have proven ineffective at forcing these survivors out of the earthquake-damaged regions, due to their reluctance to employ deadly force against fellow Americans. As a result, the president has invited so-called foreign peacekeeping battalions to do the work of forcibly relocating the holdouts. The novel follows a small group of determined survivors in their resistance to the foreign enemies, and the American traitors who are their allies.

5.0 out of 5 stars Treason from the Left! (http://www.amazon.com/review/R102GM6INN9IN3/ref=cm_cr_pr_viewpnt#R102GM6INN9IN3), May 23, 2009
By Nelson Hultberg (http://www.amazon.com/gp/pdp/profile/A1LQTRILBY0SN5/ref=cm_cr_rdp_pdp)
This review is from: Foreign Enemies And Traitors (Perfect Paperback)

Will America survive the upcoming years as a "sovereign nation," or will the hideous dream of one-world government be our fate? This is the paramount issue facing America in the 21st century; it transcends all other concerns.

In Foreign Enemies and Traitors, Matt Bracken has created a brilliant Atlas Shrugged like narrative of how this issue might play out amidst the economic meltdown now consuming us. Conservatives and libertarians throughout America will take to this tale like the colonists took to Tom Paine in 1776.

As the story begins, the Second Great Depression (what Bracken has dubbed the "Greater Depression") rages throughout America. The country is splitting up geographically with several secessionist movements in response to a radical leftist administration recently ushered into power in Washington. But the country has also been struck with a horrific earthquake that levels Memphis, TN and the surrounding Mississippi River valley. This causes massive panic made all the worse by hordes of refugees, pillaging war lords, and the inevitable reversion to barbarism that such societal collapses bring.

In response to the chaos resulting from the economic depression, the secessionist movements and the earthquake, America's President has invited "foreign troops" under the aegis of U.N. control into the country to try and suppress the rebels and establish a powerful centralized government again under Washington's grip.

Mr. Bracken thrusts into this mix a cast of heroic characters with names like Boone Vikersun and Phil Carson (think Daniel and Kit if your historical memory is sluggish) -- to fight a guerrilla war in, of all places, the state of Tennessee against the overweening powers of a grotesquely corrupt Washington. Pure gold! Boone and Carson in the 21st century fighting for the Republic.

The female lead, Jenny McClure, is a winsome, feisty teenager -- just waking up to the cruelty of an adult world turned upside down -- and about as courageous as humans get. Upon reading of her trials and how she measures up to them, the emotion felt is twofold: immense awe and the hope that if life's tribulations ever presented such dilemmas to ourselves, our reactions would be equally as spirited in manner.

The book's galvanic plot is tension-packed and unfolds with startling surprises right up to the end. Numerous scenes occur throughout in which courage, patriotism, and honor come into play in such emotionally riveting ways as to bring a physical tingling sensation to the back of one's neck.

At stake is a clash of governing philosophies between the socialist left and the free-enterprise right, between the "new Constitution" illegally rammed through in a panicky Constitutional Convention and the "old Constitution" which spawned America from the beginning and was the law of the land for 125 years until collectivists degraded it into a "living document" to be reinterpreted with Mad Hatter's logic.

Overlying all this is the defense backbone of the nation -- our military forces -- and what side they must choose in this epic clash between the treasonous forces of the new-world order in Washington and the loyalist forces of freedom amidst the patriotic states. The former trumpets the "new" Constitution and its implementation, while the latter fights for the "old" Constitution and its restoration. Which Constitution do we uphold? The military's leading generals must decide which to defend, and it makes for a crackerjack story that will keep you reading late into the night as Bracken's trio of Americanist heroes -- Boone, Carson, and Jenny -- are drawn into one escapade after another to defend the rebellious states and attempt to take the country back from a quisling President and his perverse entourage of socialist apparatchiks.

Bracken writes vividly and integrates all the subtle nuances of today's leftist media / academy brainwash into the dialogue. His grasp of their pernicious semantic twistings is impeccable. Moreover the didacticism of the book is written into the scenes perfectly. No long-winded lectures to take away from the pace of the story; but numerous pithy and powerful expressions of what freedom, the Constitution, and America are all about come forth from his characters.

Foreign Enemies and Traitors could be one of those "turning point" books of American history. I only hope that someone like Glenn Beck or Patrick Buchanan will read it. It is a book that would explode on the charts if they started promoting it. Of course, the political left will come down on this tome like a blitzkrieg to try and kill the message of its talented author if it looks like widespread popularity is coming his way. But that goes with the territory when one writes of patriotism and honor in an era that worships acquiescence and popularity.

This is a book that all freedom-loving Americans will enjoy immensely -- not just because it is a cogent political accounting of what America's problems are and what the military's proper response to the constitutional implications must be, but also because it is a splendid, scintillating story. The author has combined the two areas of "message" and "plot" together in a most persuasive and entertaining manner. Move over Tom Clancy.

A nice journey with a poor end. It is more than reasonable that the military would intervene to restore Constitutional order. One question would be why it took so long.

My Review:

The most important thing in my review of the Free Kindle Book of the Day is to make such a review so that my forum, blog and e-mail readership can download the book while it is still free. Thus I don't have time to read more than the prologue, some of the middle, and the last chapter or so. However, by actually reviewing this book, I have already taken some sort of steps to ensure that it is downloaded and read because out of a Kindle Library of nearly 2,000 books -- most of them gotten free -- I've reviewed less than twenty of them, or less than one percent.

This particular book, is the third in a trilogy. For four days, from Oct. 28th to Oct 31st this book will be a free Kindle download.

This last in the series is reported to drag, especially compared to the first two. It follows one of the main characters from the first two books, one that hadn't been killed off yet. Since I haven't read it yet, I'm not going to review it yet. But for those who downloaded the first two of the trilogy for free, you might as well download this one while it is free as well.

Joseph Balkoski is Command Historian of the Maryland National Guard and one of the world's leading authorities on D-Day. He lives in Baltimore.

I was born in NYC and graduated from Vassar College in 1975. I also gained an M.A. in history at New York University. I moved to Baltimore in 1981 and have been here ever since. As soon as I moved here I became fascinated with the US Army's 29th Infantry Division because so many of my neighbors served in it. I have been very honored not only to know past members of the division well, but also its current members, since I serve as Historian for the Maryland National Guard. Both the old and young soldiers are fabulous people and always keep my life interesting. In my spare time, I play the piano and participate in various sports activities as much as I can.

Five out of Five Stars: Balanced research and reading that flows well (http://www.amazon.com/review/RG7JL799YS6L2/ref=cm_cr_pr_viewpnt#RG7JL799YS6L2), January 8, 2006

By Sci-fi and history reader (http://www.amazon.com/gp/pdp/profile/A1ELTY50L0NF10/ref=cm_cr_rdp_pdp)

This review is from: Beyond The Beachhead: The 29th Infantry Division in Normandy (Stackpole Military History Series) (Paperback)

A well researched book that flows extremely well. The author describes the division's formation, training, and preparations for the invasion of Normandy. The author also describes the German 352nd Infantry Division (primary opponent of the 29th Infantry Division in Normandy) it's background and formation. The author then compares the commanders, each nation's tactics, and overall battle strategy for the Normandy invasion.

The description of the initial assaults into Omaha landing zone is sobering, whole companies annihilated. As the author describes the follow-on landings and the eventual US breakthrough, the author goes into a "what if" analysis. What if the German high command and Division commander followed Rommel's strategy to place more troops on the beach zones. What if one extra German infantry battalion or regiment had been defending the landing zones, would the US troops been able to move inland? What if one panzer regiment was in proximity to counterattack the first day?

The author then writes of the deadly fighting in the hedgerows in trying to capture St. Lo. This becomes a very sobering point. The author notes that the 29th Infantry Division spent 8 weeks in Normandy, and took in 15,000 replacements to maintain the fighting strength of the 14,000 soldier Division.

The 82nd Airborne Division (approx. 8500 troops) spent 4 weeks in Normandy and took approx, 45% casualties (according to official records). Quite the comparison in roles and casualties suffered when not being able to pulled from the front line to receive and integrate replacements. The similar is described in The Battle for the Hurtgen Forest (Charles MacDonald) where the US took 28,000 casualties in series of deadly infantry attacks in a deep forest that reduced whole US Infantry Divisions, including the 1st and 28th.

In the Band of Brother (Ambrose) Easy Company spent years training, as did the 29th Infantry Div, jumped into Normandy, and was pulled off the fighting line to refit while the Infantry Divisions fought straight on. Ambrose considers that Easy Company was the best in Europe in late 1944. But when one compares Easy Company (part of the 101st Airborne Division) to those in the 29th Infantry as described in this book, the 29th had it much harder trying to maintain its proficiency and effectiveness due to the time spent in the front lines. Easy company was also more fortunate not to have been a landing boat in the 1st wave into Omaha where entire companies were lost or reduced to a handful of soldiers.

One note the author makes is the different leadership styles of the commanders along with the differences and initial bias against the Reserve and National Guard officers by the active duty, West Point graduate, Division Commander. Once the campaign wore on, several ineffective active duty officers were replaced, sometimes by National Guard officers. The point of the matter, where a person gains their commission is not important as to how a person performs their role and successfully accomplishes the mission while caring for their troops. Note: Colin Powell is an ROTC graduate and achieved success based on his performance, not on where he received his commission.

Good book and different perspective that is balanced and offers good comparisons on the combatants involved.

This review is from: Beyond the Beachhead: The 29th Infantry Division in Normandy (Paperback)

Look, I know I'm going to catch some flack for not rating this book higher but let me tell you why I feel I'm justified. This book describes the 29th Division from their long stay in England to the difficult capture of St.Lo about a month after D-Day. It's an excellent history with some of the best detail describing the trip from England to the beach. Also, there is extreme detail of the American theory of attack vs. the German's which is quite interesting. There is quite a difference, particularly in the use of firepower and movement of troops.

But where the book fails vs. a Stephon Ambrose type book is the lack of personal attachment to the individuals. Where a Stephan Ambrose book clearly takes most of the information from detailed soldier interviews, this books seemed to take all it's information from military journals of the war. It read so clinically I wondered if soldiers were interviewed to get the human side of the story. Reading the bibliography, it claims there were interviews.

I am so intrigued by the sacrifice made by our WWII veterans. I just don't feel this did justice to these men. It might be better read by someone studying the war in college from a tactical standpoint. I'd recommend Band of Brothers or Ghost Soldiers for stories of WWII that better let you feel the emotion of the fight. Not a bad book. Just didn't totally attach the reader to the soldiers who sacrificed so much.

This particular book, is the first from this military historian from Baltimore detailing the exploits of the 29th Infantry Division, a National Guard Division, from Maryland and Eastern Pennsylvania and Northern Virginia, as it took part in fighting from the fiercely contested Omaha Beach. Later historical books in the series of four or five goes to the fighting in the Huertgen Forest to the invasion of Germany. Balkowski covers the military history of the division from his area of the country thoroughly.

All of these Stackpole Military History books cover aspects of their particular topic pretty thoroughly. Best of all, when they are free downloads, there is no reason not to download and read at your leisure, be it on a tablet, a Kindle, or a computer screen.

I might well do a further review when I've read more of this free book.

Book Description

Publication Date: August 21, 2011
Eugene Debs Hartke (named after the famous early 20th century Socialist working class leader) describes an odyssey from college professor to prison inmate to prison warden back again to prisoner in another of Vonnegut's bitter satirical explorations of how and where (and why) the American dream begins to die. Employing his characteristic narrative device--a retrospective diary in which the protagonist retraces his life at its end, a desperate and disconnected series of events here in Hocus Pocus show Vonnegut with his mask off and his rhetorical devices unshielded.

Debs (and Vonnegut) see academia just as imprisoning as the corrupt penal system and they regard politics as the furnishing and marketing of lies. Debs, already disillusioned by circumstance, quickly tracks his way toward resignation and then fury. As warden and prisoner, Debs (and the reader) come to understand that the roles are interchangeable; as a professor jailed for ""radical"" statements in the classroom reported by a reactionary student, he comes to see the folly of all regulation. The ""hocus pocus"" of the novel's title does not describe only the jolting reversals and seemingly motiveless circumstance which attend Debs' disillusion and suffering, but also describe the political, social, and economic system of a country built upon can't, and upon the franchising of lies.

At 68, Vonnegut had not only abandoned the sentiment and cracked optimism manifest in Slaughterhouse-Five, he had abandoned any belief in the system or faith for its recovery. This novel is another in a long series of farewells to the farmland funeral rites of childhood.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Kurt Vonnegut was born in Indianapolis in 1922. He studied at the universities of Chicago and Tennessee and later began to write short stories for magazines. His first novel, Player Piano, was published in 1951 and since then he has written many novels, among them: The Sirens of Titan (1959), Mother Night (1961), Cat's Cradle (1963), God Bless You Mr Rosewater (1964), Welcome to the Monkey House; a collection of short stories (1968), Breakfast of Champions (1973), Slapstick, or Lonesome No More (1976), Jailbird (1979), Deadeye Dick (1982), Galapagos (1985), Bluebeard (1988) and Hocus Pocus (1990). During the Second World War he was held prisoner in Germany and was present at the bombing of Dresden, an experience which provided the setting for his most famous work to date, Slaughterhouse Five (1969). He has also published a volume of autobiography entitled Palm Sunday (1981) and a collection of essays and speeches, Fates Worse Than Death (1991).

Kurt Vonnegut is one of the most beloved American writers of the twentieth century. Vonnegut's audience increased steadily since his first five pieces in the 1950s and grew from there. His 1968 novel Slaughterhouse-Five has become a canonic war novel with Joseph Heller's Catch-22 to form the truest and darkest of what came from World War II.

Vonnegut began his career as a science fiction writer, and his early novels -- Player Piano and The Sirens of Titan -- were categorized as such even as they appealed to an audience far beyond the reach of the category. In the 1960s, Vonnegut became closely associated with the Baby Boomer generation, a writer on that side, so to speak.

Now that Vonnegut's work has been studied as a large body of work, it has been more deeply understood and unified. There is a consistency to his satirical insight, humor and anger which makes his work so synergistic. It seems clear that the more of Vonnegut's work you read, the more it resonates and the more you wish to read. Scholars believe that Vonnegut's reputation (like Mark Twain's) will grow steadily through the decades as his work continues to increase in relevance and new connections are formed, new insights made.

ABOUT THE SERIES

Author Kurt Vonnegut is considered by most to be one of the most important writers of the twentieth century. His books Slaughterhouse-Five (named after Vonnegut's World War II POW experience) and Cat's Cradle are considered among his top works. RosettaBooks offers here a complete range of Vonnegut's work, including his first novel (Player Piano, 1952) for readers familiar with Vonnegut's work as well as newcomers.

5.0 out of 5 stars In the shadow of Musket Mountain (http://www.amazon.com/review/R357X1DCVMY9NO/ref=cm_cr_pr_viewpnt#R357X1DCVMY9NO), November 26, 2005
By Kevin G. Summers (http://www.amazon.com/gp/pdp/profile/A1RSKPKEP21IWT/ref=cm_cr_rdp_pdp)

This review is from: Hocus Pocus (Mass Market Paperback)

This is probably my favorite of all of Vonnegut's works. It's the story of an ex-military man who becomes a teacher at a school for learning-disabled rich kids. He eventually is fired from the school for telling the students what an embarrassment it is to be an American, and he is hired by the prison across the lake. The story only gets more cynical and more sentimental from there. As each character dies, and so it goes, they are buried in the shadow of Musket Mountain when the sun goes down, a nice, poetic touch on this deeply sarcastic look at the American ruling class. I loved the alternative history lesson provided in this book, it's nice to see the positive side of American socialism and the potential it once held way back at the start of the 20th century. Hocus Pocus is one of those books I go back to ever couple of years and re-read...I like it that much.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointingly little magic (http://www.amazon.com/review/R250IPXFBA4Y5I/ref=cm_cr_pr_viewpnt#R250IPXFBA4Y5I), June 21, 2006

By Paul W. Burgess II "Paul" (http://www.amazon.com/gp/pdp/profile/A3SCSOBPOC6Y99/ref=cm_cr_rdp_pdp)

This review is from: Hocus Pocus (Paperback)

Allow me to begin by stating that I have read just about every book published by Kurt Vonnegut and have enjoyed most and positively loved several. In Hocus Pocus though, he seems to have just lost much of the magic that makes much of his work so special. Most of his books have me rushing to the end, they're hard to put down. This was the first book by him that I've ever had a tough time finishing. If it were not written by Vonnegut, i may have put it down for a little while. It is by no means a bad book, but just disappointing for such a master. Though some points are strong, they are rarely well made, the cynicism is elevated to ridiculous levels, and he seems to have forgotten how to be so artfully subtle. The morals and ideas are presented to you so much as they attempt to pound you on the head. I can't really say that I recommend this book to Vonnegut diehards because they will be disappointed, and I can't in good conscience recommend it to those wanting to get into Vonnegut, because it may be the last of his books they choose to read.

I've bought SlaughterHouse Five from this author, but didn't read it. Reading the first chapter of this book in which the protagonist identifies himself, he has a self-deprecating style which reminds me of a friend of mine I met in the NutHouse who killed his father with a claw hammer. The style is of someone who isn't satisfied with his life, but wouldn't want to live it in ignorance of what really goes on.

I might well do a further review when I've read more of this free book.

This review is from: Exodus Lost (Kindle Edition)

It is amazing how we take so many things for granted, how much we assume about the history of the New World. Before reading Exodus Lost, I was comfortable believing that Columbus had discovered America in 1492 and that maybe, just maybe, Leif Ericsson had landed in Newfoundland a few centuries before. I also knew that the Native Americans were thought to have crossed a land bridge from Asia across what is now the Bering Strait with no mention of Africa. Thanks to Compton's book, I can say with certainty that the Pre-Columbian world was linked beyond random encounters and coincidences. Through compelling examples backed up by hard facts, including the Bible, he links ancient Egypt with Mesoamerica, dispelling the teachings of traditional history textbooks.

You would expect a book like this to be long-winded and pedantic. Nothing could be farther from the truth! Compton's prose is succinct and informative, the kind of writing that makes you want to turn the page and see what's next. Despite having done thorough research, he doesn't get hung up on quoting and referencing scholarly works and riddling his text with footnotes. Instead, he makes sure to insert 126 beautiful photos, maps and engravings, making Exodus Lost all that more amenable. Each chapter is choc full of information on the ancient world and facts as well as hypotheses that will make you want to jump out of your seat. You will also probably ask yourself a few questions. One of mine was, "Why didn't they teach me that in school?"

This exquisite combination of informativeness and simplicity means that this book can be read by everyone, from the merely curious to historians and Bible scholars. For those of you who feel more comfortable reading this work in Spanish, you will be delighted to know that there is a Spanish translation, Éxodo Perdido, which I am happy to report is rendered so well in Spanish that I, a professional Spanish-English Translator with twenty years of experience, was unable to notice that it was indeed a translation and not the original work. This speaks well of the author, his choice of translator and reflects his scholarship and the general care invested in Exodus Lost. So I urge you to challenge your traditional textbook knowledge and uncover the mystery of the link between ancient Egypt and the New World and have a wonderful time along the way.

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining but Unconvincing, September 16, 2013

This review is from: Exodus Lost (Kindle Edition)
As a history major, former history teacher, and adult Sunday school teacher who also loves science fiction and historical novels, I found "Exodus Lost" to be fascinating. S.C. Compton thoroughly researched the topic, and "Exodus Lost" is heavily foot-noted with apparently solid references. The author made compelling connections between the ancient Old and New Worlds that heretofore I was unaware of. Even so, I had a nagging suspicion that he was cherry-picking information, and I remained unconvinced. The tipping point for me was the author's hypothesis for the source of Elijah's fire in the confrontation with the priests of Baal. Even though S.C. Compton includes the caveat "only suggest it as a small aside," his explanation of Elijah's fire cast a great deal of doubt in my mind as to the veracity of his entire work. I would thus be reluctant to cite "Exodus Lost" as a work of credible history. However, I do recommend the book for those readers who like to stretch the boundaries of conventional thinking.

My Review:

The most important thing in my review of the Free Kindle Book of the Day is to make such a review so that my forum, blog and e-mail readership can download the book while it is still free. Thus I don't have time to read more than the prologue, some of the middle, and the last chapter or so. However, by actually reviewing this book, I have already taken some sort of steps to ensure that it is downloaded and read because out of a Kindle Library of nearly 2,000 books -- most of them gotten free -- I've reviewed less than twenty of them, or less than one percent. My format is to take the most favorable useful review, the least favorable useful review, along with what the Kindle seller's page says about the number of pages and about the author.

Of all the books that I recommend that you download for free, this one is it. The author makes a case for proving that the origins of the Olmec founding civilization was of Whites from Egypt and Canaanites from Phoenicia. And contrary to the pretenses of Rabbi William Finck, the Phoenicians were known as Canaanites by those that they engaged in sharp practices with until 1200 BC, and then they changed their names, like Rabbi Eli James / Joseph November-Kutz-Putz to "Phoenicians" while knowing amongst themselves as Canaanites all along. The author also covers the Hyksos Kings and how Joseph managed to save up fertile harvests in the years before the 1650 BC volcanic destruction of Santorini / Atlantis followed by the volcanic winter of famine which brought forth the ownership of Egypt by the Pharoahs. And for those of you who are of non-Christian belief, the Solutrean origins of 12,000 to 7000 BC Pre-Columbine America are mentioned. This ought to provide grist for John DeNugent's and Harold Covington's mill.

Every White Nationalist and Christian Identity follower should download this extensively footnoted book, especially while it remains a free Kindle download today. You don't need a Kindle if you have a PC, or a tablet or smart-phone application. All you need is an Amazon account.

I might well do a further review when I've read more of this free book.

Book Description

Publication Date: February 24, 2014

Almost a century after the battles of the First World War ended, their consequences remain imprinted on the political maps of Europe and much of the Middle East.

Did events justify Lloyd George's claim in 1914 that the Kaiser could fall `by knocking away the props'; isolating Germany by defeating her partners?

When Italy joined the Allies who was propping up whom?

Were sideshows in the Balkans, Iraq and Palestine integral to the war's general strategy, or were they simply old imperial rivalries resumed by other means?

A hundred years on, that moment in November 1918 when the fighting ceased on the Western Front is still remembered across nations: that symbolic eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.

'Victory 1918' examines the background to the Allied triumph and its aftermath. Might the Armistice in the forest of Compiegne have come sooner? Did American intervention have won the war and compromised the peace? How near did Germany come to denouncing the Armistice and resuming fighting in 1919?

But 'Victory 1918' is not only concerned with what happened in France and Flanders. There were four armistices that autumn. The Great War was a global conflict, with battlefronts on three continents. Retracing the path to Compiegne through the four-year struggle allows the reader to consider if a broader strategic vision might have brought an earlier victory.

'Victory 1918' is a masterful survey of one of history's great turning points, and offers a fresh interpretation of the war which, more than any other, determined the character of the twentieth century.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really Great Book about the Great War., October 20, 2005

This review is from: Victory 1918 (Hardcover)

I'm 58 years old and I'm a Vietnam Veteran(and proud of it). But ever since I was a pre adolescent I have been facinated by the subject of the First World War! I have read many books about the Great War and I believe that this one is one of the best that I have Read!

Mr. Palmer has also written another book about the First World War, which I have not read, "The Gardeners of Salonika". After reading this book I shall try to read that one as well. One of the previous reviewers said that the author omitted the causes of the war and the first year or two of the war in this book. Well what about it! This book is titled "Victory 1918" not "A Complete History of World War I". In 368 pages the author does more to clarify and elucidate the war time situation than a dozen so called authoritive texts do.

Thank God, we have an author who sees through this obsession with the Western Front! PBS did a series several years ago entitled "The Great War and the Making of the Twentieth Century". Unfortunately 95 % of the series dealt only with the Western Front. Serbia, Palestine, Mesopotania, Africa, Balkans, Roumania, Italy, war at sea, etc. were totally ignored. I ask you as important as the Western Front was, don't you think some of the above had a greater impact on the developments of the 20'th century? Does the word OIL ring a bell?

In this book we are given an excellent picture of of the progression of the conflict in Mesopotamia(Iraq), Palestine, Balkans, Italy and the Western front from 1916 to the various Armistice agreements with Bulgaria, Turkey, Austria, Hungary and Germany. The various Russian Campaigns are not included. If you know even a smattering of Great War history you know that Russia was out of the war by 1917. And, I do not believe that they participated in any victory in World War One!

These campaigns and battles were no easy matter folks! We can look back on this long ago war, fought by millions of anonymous, distant actors with quaint stage props as hopelessly irrelevant. But they were fighting a war that they fervently believed in. Which is alot more than I can say about our current Mesopotanian mess! Palmer shows us the real people in that long ago war. It was all so terribly new and so very important in 1918. Alan Palmer captures that spirit in this book. This is a Great work of History!

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific & Comprehensive Textbook on the First World War!, July 21, 2000

(HALL OF FAME REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)

This review is from: Victory 1918 (Hardcover)

In this sobering, comprehensive, and highly detailed account of the war he claims determined the social and political direction of the 20th century, acclaimed author Alan Palmer leads the reader through the incredibly bloody trench warfare of the First World War with an authority and informed discussion of the causes, battles, and results of this long, disastrous, and momentous conflict. Unlike previous efforts by other authors, Palmer does not neglect the many fronts other than the well-discussed European theater of operations. Rather, he weaves a wide-ranging discussion successfully linking the conflicts along the eastern "Russian" front as well as in the Balkan area (where the initial tripwire was pulled by the assassination in Sarajevo) were an integral part of this first world war, and also discusses the significance of the Middle Eastern and African theaters of operation to the progress and complications of the overall conflict.

This is indeed a serious, objective, and detailed look at the morass the civilized world slipped into as the chaos began in August of 1914. The author takes a country by country, front by front approach that illuminates and de-romanticizes the nature of the conflict, which according to the author was a blunt, indifferent and murderous affair, and one reads through pages of terrible detail full of hand to hand combat, the endless mud, virtual seas of rats and other vermin, and the sometimes overwhelming stench of decaying corpses. Palmer weaves the fact-rich text with a sense of the crushing ordeal for the men in the trenches, trapped by geography, terrain, climate and circumstance into a years-long stagnant war of attrition that was far more horrific than any large-scale warfare of the past. Of course, one of the key elements making it so terrible was the new weaponry developed with such precision in the new manufacturing facilities all over the otherwise "civilized" Europe. In this sense it was a frightening preview of what lay ahead for all the wars of the 20th century.

Palmer also carves out some controversial territory for himself by handily challenging conventional wisdom on a number of issues, such as the notion that it was the final desperate surge toward Paris late in the war that tipped the balance in favor of the Allies and against France. The author argues that it was in fact the global nature of the war and the fact that the Allies had so critically damaged the ability of the Germans to sustain its far-flung empire that kicked the chair out from under the Germans. There is also a lot of interesting and relevant information provided concerning the diplomatic and political efforts of Britain, France and Germany in the months leading up to the onset of the war that I read here for the first time. This is a wonderful book, and while I am not entirely convinced by some of the author's arguments for a few of the controversial positions, I have to applaud the extremely comprehensive, well-organized, and terrifically integrated account he provides of the war that has cast the terrible blood-filled cauldron for everything that followed so fatefully in its wake. Enjoy.

Book Description

Publication Date: March 9, 2014
From the #1 bestselling author of History's Greatest Generals comes an exciting new book on the greatest explorers in history and how their discoveries shaped the modern world

Whether it is Rabban Bar Sauma, the 13th-century Chinese monk commissioned by the Mongols to travel West form a military alliance against the Islam; Marco Polo, who opened a window to the East for Europe; or Captain James Cook, whose maritime voyages of discovery created the global economy of the 21st century, each of these explorers had an indelible impact on modern society.

This book will look at the 11 greatest explorers in history. Some traveled for religious piety, such as Ibn Battuta, who travelled from North Africa to Indonesia in the 1300s, visiting every Islamic pilgrimage site between -- and becoming counselor to over 30 heads of state. Others traveled for profit, such as Ferdinand Magellan, who wanted to consolidate Spain's holdings on the spice trade. Others traveled for the sheer thrill of adventure, such as Victorian explorer Richard Francis Burton, who learned 29 languages, went undercover as a Muslim on a pilgrimage to Mecca, and wrote 50 books on topics ranging from a translation of the Kama Sutra to a manual on bayonet exercises. Still others travelled for discovery, such as Ernest Shackleton, who led two dozen men to the bottom of the world in an attempt to cross Antarctica on foot.

Whatever their reason for discovery, these explorers still inspire us today to push the limits of human achievement -- and discover something about ourselves in the process.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Very Interesting and Informative Read!, April 18, 2014

By Jennifer (Ontario, Canada) (http://www.amazon.com/gp/pdp/profile/ADT2OMJZAM159/ref=cm_cr_pr_pdp) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Off the Edge of the Map: Marco Polo, Captain Cook, and 9 Other Travelers and Explorers That Pushed the Boundaries of the Known World (Paperback)

I just finished reading the book Off The Edge of the Map: Marco Polo, Captain Cook and 9 Other Travelers and Explorers That Pushed The Boundaries of the World by Michael Rank. Years ago, when I was in high school history was not one of my preferred subjects, but as I get older, I find myself becoming more and more interested in historical books. When I learned that I was going to be able to review this book, I was really pleased.

Michael Rank has written a very interesting book in which he selects eleven individuals who were pioneers in the truest sense of the word. Rank comes from the world of academia; he is a doctoral candidate in Middle Eastern history and so his opinions are based on years of post-secondary education in history. This is a fact that I appreciated. It is easy enough to select the commonly known explorers of old, and regurgitate their stories. Instead he selected a few historical figures who were unknown to me, but after reading their stories, I was amazed by their feats. I was also amazed that I had never heard of these people before.

For example, the author devotes a chapter to Ibn Battuta, a North African scholar who travelled throughout Africa and the Middle East for a number of years. When I read about his exploits, all of which took place in the 14th Century, without the benefit of modern conveniences, it was truly astonishing.

In another chapter, he tells the story of a Chinese monk named Rabban Bar Sauma, who is sometimes known as the reverse Marco Polo. He set out from the far East, and ventured west, a journey that I had never heard in any other contemporary historical textbook. The author’s background in Middle Eastern history really helps to bring Rabban Bar Sauma’s story to life. The perils faced upon his many travels were numerous, and the fact that he lived into his seventies seems almost incomprehensible.

Michael Rank also devotes chapters to many well-known explorers like Marco Polo, Captain James Cook, and Ferdinand Magellan. Even though I was familiar with these names, it was nice to re-read their stories with a more mature appreciation for the extent of their achievements.

Off The Edge of the Map was a really enjoyable book. I found Michael Rank’s writing style to be very well-informed, while still very readable. I did not get the sense that I was getting the same old version of a story that I had heard before. It was apparent that Rank’s research truly informed his writing, and for that I was truly appreciative.

If you are a person that enjoys reading story about notable historical figures, then I would highly recommend Off The Edge of the Map. An undisputed two thumbs up!

I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

Book Description

Publication Date: July 16, 2012

Hotshot attorney Martin Vail must defend a young man accused of brutally murdering Archbishop Rushman, known as the "Saint of Lakeview Drive." This case looks impossible until his psychologist makes a discovery.

"Spine-tingling ... Mr. Diehl (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Diehl) can sustain suspense."
--THE NEW YORK TIMES

Martin Vail, the brilliant "bad-boy" lawyer every prosecutor and politician loves to hate, is defending Aaron Stampler, a man found holding a bloody butcher's knife near a murdered archbishop. Vail is certain to lose, but Vail uses his unorthodox ways to good advantage when choosing his legal team--a tight group of men and women who must uncover the extraordinary truth behind the archbishop's slaughter. They do, in a heart-stopping climax unparalleled for the surprise it springs on the reader.

Clever twists and a bona fide surprise ending make this an above-average courtroom thriller, tapping into the post-O.J. scrutiny of our legal system in the case of a hotshot Chicago defense attorney (Richard Gere) whose latest client is an altar boy (Edward Norton) accused of murdering a Catholic archbishop. The film uses its own manipulation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Primal_Fear_(film)) to tell a story about manipulation, and when we finally discover who's been pulling the strings, the payoff is both convincing and pertinent to the ongoing debate over what constitutes truth in the American system of justice. Making an impressive screen debut that has since led to a stellar career, Norton gives a performance that rides on a razor's edge of schizophrenic pathology -- his role is an actor's showcase, and without crossing over the line of credibility, Norton milks it for all it's worth. Gere is equally effective in a role that capitalizes on his shifty screen persona, and Laura Linney and Frances McDormand give memorable performances in their intelligently written supporting roles.

This review is from: Primal Fear (Kindle Edition)

A Bishop with an eminent standing in the local community is sadistically murdered by a teenager who was under his care, to the point that beyond the large amount of mortal wounds inflicted all over his body, his genital organs end up stuffed in his mouth .The potential perpetrator is a teenager suffering from a multiple personality disorder. Was he or his alter ego ?, is he accountable if his alter ego has done it ?, is multiple personality disorder a recognized mental disease ?, is the physical evidence found in the room where the crime took place good enough beyond reasonable doubt to nail the accused and punish him with the electric chair ?..., Is this situation real or is the accused actually faking the disorder? Was the murder premeditated ? Who is the Bishop indeed ?
Legal psycho thriller, with two great caracter developments, Vail, the flamboyant fiery defense attorney who is defending the teenager pro bono, and Aaron the defendant, who acts as an individual with two turning personalities, Aaron the gifted innocent hilbilly boy, and Roy the mean sadistic beast who cannot tell good from evil.

Then second half of the book where the ardent criminal trial unfolds, featuring lost of interesting questioning, is far more interesting and better writtten that the first half of the book which encompasses the heinous criminal act and ensuing investigation, the ending holds a great surprise, making the whole book worth reading.

Reviews:

My Review: 5 of 5 stars If there was a West Point for Racial Nationalist warlords then this book would be required reading, August 9, 2015

http://www.amazon.com/review/R18V8FQWQC40GM/ref=cm_cr_rdp_perm?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B013IBTPEY

In the past year Billy Roper has really cranked out five or six books, especially the "Hasten the Day" Trilogy and two or three other non-fiction books. I got this Kindle book as a free download although Billy Roper did send me two other of his books for review -- which I haven't reviewed just yet although I did read the first Hasten the Day novel.

"The Balk" is the most like Edgar Steele's "Defensive Racism" (from 2004) and Thomas Chittum's "Civil War II" (around 1995) in that Roper explains the numbers behind the demographic and political change ending the White dominance of the former United States of Amerika and predicts ongoing Balkanization into regional ethnostates of what Roper calls, ala Edgar Steele, "New America". Thus this quick and short book is also the non-fictional analog to Roper's fictional "Hasten the Day" trilogy in which Roper predicts that there will be a UN Dominated Protectorate along the East Coast, a Republic of Greater Texas, an Nuevo Atzlan, a New Africa, a Mormon Theocracy, a Chinese Military Protectorate on the West Coast. But the focus of Billy's novels and this non-fiction treatise is the "New America" consisting of 22 largely landlocked states of the former Midwest from Ohio to North Carolina to Arkansas to Kansas to Idaho and some Western English Provinces of Canada. This "New America" is thus largely an alliance of regional warlords legitimatized by a few trappings of a Constitutional Republic in which all the White ethnics know their place within a former America which is recovering from the Collapse.

Within 78 pages Roper crunches the latest demographic numbers and makes suggestions for personal survival as a family by both personal preparation and creating racial community within your neighborhood while it still is white. Thus this book, while not "prepper porn", is useful in that it provides an overview for your personal survival. The Militia Movement of the mid-90's after Waco had as its bible Chittum's Civil War II. Now there are from three to four times the demographic of much the same types of person, i.e. survivalists, but they no longer claim to be "militia" because none of them remotely think that there is any peaceful political solution to be found. They are preparing for Armageddon via race war and non-peaceful secession. So four times the numbers on the ground in "flyover country" but none of them wanting to be any part of the Empire. Thus there are not only the numbers already armed and ready, but a sizable warlord leadership class to make a "Neo-Aristocracy" petty warlord class when the Empire crashes and burns.

This Billy Roper's quick book should be required reading if there was a West Point for potential racial warlords wanting to run a local dictatorship arranged on theocratic lines who want to make regional alliances under color of law in order to mutually protect themselves against the mestizo, negro, and Chinese regional ethno-states. This short non-fictional predictive book is valuable merely if you are looking for suggestions as to how this dytopian future might play out.

The best thing about Roper cranking these books out is that as a result they are timely. They mention the shooting of five marines by a Muslim in Chattanooga within a month of it happening. Thus Roper by default is now the only one within our racial Nationalist Movement to even have a book in print in which these matters are seriously, yet thoroughly mentioned.

The most important thing in my review of the Free Kindle Book of the Day is to make such a review so that my forum, blog and e-mail readership can download the book while it is still free.

I downloaded this e-book for free, read it in a few hours and found it well-formatted.

Hail Victory!!!
