UK Election: Tories Falling Short of a Majority

With more than 150 seats now declared in the UK election, it looks like Theresa May's Conservative Party is heading for a shock defeat, resulting in a hung parliament and a coalition government, political chaos, and the end of her own career.

Labour has been winning a few seats around the country, while the only bright spot for the Conservatives has been Scotland, where they have been taking seats from the SNP.

The BBC is projecting that the Conservatives will win 322 seats, just short of the 326 needed for a majority. If this projection is correct, it would mean that the most likely outcome would be a Conservative minority government, with support from Ulster Unionist parties, a very weak position for a government going into the shocks and strains of the BREXIT negotiations.

If the result turns out to be worse than this, things could be even more chaotic with the possibility of a ramshackle "Coalition of Chaos" of Labour, SNP, and the Liberal Democrats.

Whatever happens, British politics will be in a mess for some time to come. There is also a growing likelihood of Theresa May getting the chop, as the main reason for the Tory defeat is thought to be her extremely poor campaigning, with some analysts describing her performance as "robotic."

The odds are now rising of Foreign Secretary and BREXIT campaigner Boris Johnson replacing her within weeks.
