4.0 out of 5 stars Straightforward but beware May 6, 2013

    By Francesca CH

    Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase

This is a straightforward and no fluff book about setting up a Wordpress blog. It is easy to read and follow, there are screenshots to guide you through the steps and I can imagine sitting at my desk in front of the computer screen, with my Kindle App open on my iPad and following the steps.

It is meant for beginners, as I suppose that persons already earning money with their blog(s) have already done this at least one if not more times.

Why I wrote "beware" in the title? If you don't know what you are going to write about on your blog, you need first to define the subject of the blog i.e. the niche you are going to write about and understand who your target audience is. For that preparation you might need a lot of hours of thinking about your interests and combining it with the knowledge about the market, what is in demand, what are people searching for in Internet. And only then the rest, including this book, can follow.

Even with this book's step by step approach you might still need much more than an hour. Because as a beginner one is usually unsure of many things, and is double checking things and getting used to new tool and information.

So overall - you will have a very good guidance with this book in setting up your blog if you have already defined the strategic issues of your blog.

This review is from: How to Start a Successful Blog in One Hour (Better Blog Booklets) (Kindle Edition)

The author is using this book to get affiliate commission on the hosting and domain name registration which is much more than a $5 dollar book on amazon is worth. He is probably making around $100 dollars for anyone signing up for hostgator and I thought putting affiliate links in amazon books what against their TOS.

    My Review:

If you are going to blog racialist material you need a Wordpress blog on a free speech hosting company

Today this e-book is downloadable for free, so I downloaded it. However, the normal price for this e-book is 99 cents, so that isn't the measure of the value of its worth.

What the value of its worth is what the author tells you about choosing open-source Wordpress for your blogging activity. Not Blogger or any of the "free" Google or even other 'free' blogging software. That is because anyone offering you "free" web space is using your content to sell advertising, thinks it owns your content, and will pull your blog without a seconds hesitation if some whiner sees it.

Think I'm wrong? I had a large blog of nearly 800 posts on Blogspot covering my church, The Church of Jesus Christ Christian / Aryan Nations of Missouri with nearly two years of posts. And because I dared expose this so-called White Supremacist / Christian Identity mongrel critter calling itself "SwordBrethren" impersonating a "Teutonic Knight" the lying mongrel proceeded to proceed to write e-mail after e-mail of bogus complaints to Blogspot, owned by Google, and my blog was taken down without any warning but much gloating upon all the other fake CI and WN sites.

So from sad experience, NEVER choose a blogging platform other than WordPress which you cannot make a backup and move it to another server and move your domain name. WordPress saves your content.

Second lesson is to choose a "free-speech" server. I wouldn't recommend Hostgator and certainly not Hostmonster or a "free" host on WordPress.com. Incogman.net was kicked off of the "free" Wordpress domain. Hostmonster also kicked off my WordPress blog without warning and 1and1.com and Hostgator did so because of the racialist content with warning. I'd recommend dreamhost.com or NearlyFreeSpeech.net or a place where they tell you that they won't take down your blog without warning or appeal. Still, always backup your blog at least once a week.

This booklet teaches you how to set up a rudimentary WordPress blog. I think he makes most of his money not on the authorship, but on steering the prospective member to a favored hosting company, which is fine.

I'd rate this booklet at 4 out of five stars. It covers the basics and is a quick-start guide. Later, you will learn from experience of running and writing a blog much, much more than covered here.

This review is from: Brother: A Story of Hope and Survival from Africa's Rebel Heart (Kindle Edition)

This is the Obama autobiography worth reading. George Hussein Obama is a truly amazing and caring man, who lost his way for a time and paid for it in conditions I read, yet still cannot fathom. He returned to become an inspiration to and leader of those who dwell in the Huruma slum of Nairobi.
His mother's family, and later, his father's family, instilled in him his true worth. He is his own man, and I admire him for being just that.
This is a well written book by Damien Lewis and George Hussein Obama. If you have a heart and a mind you will be moved by the clear, and occasionally, far too detailed (for a Westerner), descriptions of the conditions, the struggle, and the brutality of the `powers that be' that those less fortunate in Kenya experience.

I highly recommend this book and the following websites found at the end of the book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Dreams from my Father part deux?, March 1, 2011

      By Herbert L Calhoun "paulocal"

This review is from: Homeland: An Extraordinary Story of Hope and Survival (Hardcover)

This book is George Obama's story, one that runs parallel to a similar one told by his more famous older brother, our president, Barack. It is about how the missing father figure, Barack Hussein Obama senior (BHO1), impacted the younger of the two Obama's "manhood self-construction project."

We enter the story just as George's mom becomes pregnant out of wedlock with her second child (Marvin) by a white French AID worker, Christian. Life as a middle class Kenyan family goes quite "swimmingly" so long as Christian (who marries George's mom shortly after Marvin is born) remains part of the family. However a mystery pivotal to George's life (and one infinitely larger than a missing biological father could ever be), occurs when Christian abruptly abandons the family. The mystery however has two parts; one that George discusses; and the other than remains unaddressed in the very pregnant subtext? The story thus is not just about why Christian "ups and leaves" the family, but also about all of the un-ask (and probably unanswerable) questions of why George's mom was having sex with a white man (in the heart of black Africa) in the first place? Both parts of the question, at least in principle, implicates the mom at least as much as they do the stepfather? And equally important, a similar theme also runs through George's big brother's life psychology as well.

Although George's very emotional and financial existence does seem to have revolved around "having a white stepfather," even after confronting Christian seven years later, George still leaves us with no answer to this pivotal first part of the mystery? And what is especially curious is the fact that Christian continued to live right there in Nairobi working in an office building, in plain sight? Despite this, George nevertheless weaves an interesting but ultimately unconvincing narrative that it was Christian's abrupt departure that was the sole reason for the family's financial demise, and for George's own life choice to lead a life of crime on the margins of Nairobi's inner city ghetto that sent him into a tailspin that made him the "black sheep" of the Obama family, and that he is even now just recovering from.

In this sense, the author's narrative is yet another version of the now familiar social trope of "the missing black father figure" syndrome. Here, as elsewhere (including in Barack's own story "Dreams from my father), this story too is designed to reinforce and further convince us that it is the "missing black father" that is solely responsible for the descent of so many young black inner city boys into crime, low achievement and drugs?

But as is the case with so many other books based on this trope, I am not buying George's rationalization of (in his case) the "double missing father" trope either? I found his story unconvincing for the same reasons as all the others: It too fails to deal with the second part of the mystery, which is invariably present in most of these cases: The unanswerable and (perhaps even un-askable) questions about the Obama brothers' respective single mother's sexual virtue?

This second sub-theme IS the 800-pound Oedipal gorilla sitting in the back of the minds of all young boys who live with sexually active single moms, and who are at the same time themselves engaged in their own "manhood construction projects," where they are also modeling how they too will soon become suitors for some female's attention. It is this mixed-up matrix of feelings, hormones, insecurities and uncertainties that has to be sorted out and that runs along the periphery of the subtext of the Obama brothers stories that looms large. Arguably it is a much much larger problem than that of the "missing biological father (and stepfathers)" ever could be? Yet, in both stories, this very potent Freudian factor is either left out entirely, or remains untouched in the subtext of the narratives of the Obama brothers books?

It is not a small matter at all that both brothers arrived at the frontier of manhood with mothers of questionable virtuousness and who became pregnant out of wedlock by men of another race in cultures that at least were sensitive to, if not frowned upon such sexual encounters entirely? And yet both of the Obama brothers failed to mention the importance of this palpable and weighty fact to their respective life stories?

Thus to cut to the chase, both the Obama brothers had mothers who could be considered by the cultures of which they were a part, to be sexually adventurous (if not down right sexually promiscuous). And the best evidence of this is that both of their moms got pregnant and eventually married men AFTER their pregnancies. And it is Not just a coincidental fact that they did so with men who just happened to be from outside of their own race. The Freudians tell us that these are huge Oedipal matters in the minds of young boys who have nothing more important to think about than their mother's virtuousness. Plus, even in mostly Moslem Kenya where there is at least no institutional racism, marrying outside one's race is still almost as defining an event as it is in a profoundly racist country like America, especially during the 1960s when Barack's mother, Ann Stanley Dunham, dated and married Barack Hussein Obama senior.

And while both Obama brothers tried to minimize this pivotal Freudian event, (focussing more on why they had the common middle name Hussein), it does not take much analysis to understand how their "mothers' sexual virtue" became the much weightier mystery bearing down on their young psyches than the missing biological father figure: In these still developing young lives, the crowning mystery was not questions about the psychologically remote and symbolic "missing father BHO1," or about the common middle name of Hussein, but about the sexual virtue of their much more proximate, moms.

In fact, one could just as easily have argued that the missing father was little more than a straw man: a convenient psychological "cover:" both for the respective mothers, who used it as a distraction from all the palpably un-ask (and unanswerable) questions about her own sexual virtue. And in the case of the sons, as a way for them to avoid having to confront what it really said about their mother's sexual habits and virtue that both got pregnant before wedlock to men of other races?

This in a nutshell was the psychological dilemma central to the Obama brothers' respective "manhood construction projects."

They both dodged the dilemma in different ways. Barack was somewhat more subtle in his facility for dodging than was George. Barack, arguably the more perceptive of the two brothers, turned it (and what obviously must have been perceived as a colossal betrayal by his mom when she sent him back to Hawaii to live with his grandparents just as he arrived at the age of sexual inquisitiveness), into quiet rage that (like it did George) also sent him briefly off the rails while in Hawaii. After this betrayal, Barack, obviously and quietly, faced the facts and the demons rattling around in his brain about his mom's sexual virtue, by simply jettisoning the unnecessary psychological baggage altogether -- Ann Stanley Dunham and all. In short, his way of dealing with the issue was apparently to punish her by "distancing" himself from her altogether, in a cold never-ending "lifelong juvenile pout."

The best evidence of this is the fact that not only did he seldom mention her in his two books, but also because he didn't even attend her funereal? Thereafter (as was also the case with George, after his mom effectively abandoned him and moved to South Korea), Barack also went it alone. Both brothers pretended not to realize or acknowledge that the sexual virtue of their respective mothers was upsetting their psyches and driving their respective libidos.

The jettisoning of Ann Stanley Dunham's sexual past (along with her being as a whole), was young Barack's way of finally reaching the age of maturity. Without ceremony or rationalizations, Barack Hussein Obama Jr, simply cut the psychological umbilical cord that had weighted him down with so many unanswered (and un-askable) questions about his white mother Ann Stanley Dunham's sexual virtue, and in the process, became his own man. His manhood construction project was complete with a glaring sexual gap right at its center.. QED.

George, on the other hand, had his white stepfather "Christian's abandonment" as his global all-encompassing fallback rationalization to cover for all of his sins and failures -- as well as to shield him from the more fundamental truth haunting him from deep within about his mom's sexual virtue? He was thus able to "milk" the "Christian abandonment excuse" for all it was worth. [After all, his little brother, Marvin, Christian's own child, did not "crash and burn as a result of his father having left him?"] In short, by failing to face up to what was "really" bothering him, his mom's loose sexual habits, George's unresolved dilemma turned more and more inwards until he effectively imploded and committed psychological suicide. This began his descent into his own self-made hell: living on the inner city streets, eating out of garbage cans, mugging innocent people, turning to a crime-ridden street gang, and into a four-man Nairobi crime wave until he was rescued by being arrested on a trumped-up charge. After that he came back to a semblance of a life as a semi-adult.

But even to an elementary Freudian, all this self-destructive "acting out" was more about the unresolved issue of his mom's virtue than about having a missing white stepfather or a long-lost biological black father? It was the inner lie that he (and Barack) lived privately about their respective mom's virtue, that propelled him to crash and burn, not the abandonment by Christian. It was the lie he had to tell himself each day about his mom's virtue and why she first had sex with and then made Christian leave that turned him into "the Mumba," not the pain and hurt of Christian's departure, per se.

From where us Freudians sit, it seems all but self-evident, that neither case of the Obama brothers' problems had anything at all to do with their missing biological father? Both Lolo Soetero and Christian proved to be exemplary stepfathers. And while the specter of BHO1 did hover symbolically in the background over both brothers, it was a convenient (even a necessary), existential lie for them both to pretend that this was a more important concern than the fact that both their moms were at least in principle, sexually promiscuous as defined by having had sex out of wedlock with men of other than their own race. Neither brother has yet come to terms with this dirty little secret that has been stalking their private thoughts and thus their lives. To think that the leader of the Western World carry around such primal psychological baggage is a daunting thought. Three stars.

      My Review:

Us Truthers and Racists Should Love this Book as it confirms every single one of our racial stereotypes.

Today this e-book is downloadable for free, so I downloaded it. I glanced through it and read the other reviews and have decided to give it two stars for the talent of the liberal White or Jew ghostwriter writing what is essentially something that we take for granted: That Nairobi is not only still short one village idiot named Obama as the bumper-sticker says, but that the entire village should be rezoned as a criminal psychiatric hospital.

The story is clear: One Muslim Kenyan negro, alleged spawner of both our "First Kenyan" and its half-brother upon an unmarried public vagina open to such dealings, quickly did what cum natural and run off. In George Obongo's case, the Frog stepfather run off as well, and somehow forced the little blue-gummed, nappy-haired one into a life of crime until somehow it was "saved" because it has a hi-yaller brother who found a pack of liberals and jews to prop it up, to create for itself a fake birth certificate, and the resulting jape is now supposedly leader of the "free world", raining down predator drone strikes on other towel-heads on behalf of the Jewish neo-cons.

I'm going to read this book further and fully enjoy every single racist cliche that it brings up and coonfirms.

So for both the inadvertent humor and japiery-silliness of this book, I'm going to rate it as a "two stars" instead of my more usual one star while reading this stupid crap.

        From the Inside Flap

Who was George Gordon Meade? He should be remembered as one of the Civil War's most important generals. Instead, history has pushed him aside. The hot-tempered Meade received command of the Union's dysfunctional Army of the Potomac only three days before he defeated Robert E. Lee's Confederates at Gettysburg. After that Meade watched his reputation decline, thanks in part to the escape of Lee's army, hostility from politicians and the press, the machinations of Gen. Daniel Sickles, and the rise of Ulysses S. Grant. "I suppose after awhile it will be discovered I was not at Gettysburg at all," Meade once grumbled.

Meade, it seems, is the Rodney Dangerfield of Civil War generals. He gets no respect. Tom Huntington wanted to find out why. In Searching for George Gordon Meade, he tells the story of the general's life and his participation in the Civil War's great engagements, including Second Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and Petersburg. Huntington also provides accounts of his own investigations of Meade's legacy. Along the way he hikes across battlefields, recites the names of fallen soldiers at a candlelit ceremony at Gettysburg, drinks a champagne toast at Meade's grave on New Year's Eve, and visits a severed leg, a buried arm, and a horse's head. The result is a quirky and compelling mash-up of history, biography, travel, and journalism that casts new light on an overlooked figure from the past.

        From the Back Cover

Despite his great victory at Gettysburg and his command of the army that forced Lee's surrender at Appomattox, George Meade saw his fame eclipsed by that of Lee, Grant, and other Civil War generals. This book does a great deal to redress that historical injustice. Tom Huntington has invented a new genre of biography that shifts between past and present as he tells the story of Meade's life and describes his own pilgrimage to the key sites of that life. The result is an engrossing narrative that the reader can scarcely put down. --James M. McPherson, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Battle Cry of Freedom

"Searching for George Gordon Meade is a splendid book! Well-researched, well-reasoned, and well-written, it's a timely and vital addition to the all-too-meager literature on this neglected American hero. Strongly recommended for serious historians as well as for a general readership. Excellent!"
-- Ralph Peters, author of Cain at Gettysburg

"Much more than another Civil War biography, Tom Huntington's gripping personal ‘search' for George Gordon Meade is unique and irresistible: a combination life story, military history, travelogue, and cultural commentary that brings us closer than ever to the old general and his strange reputation--and also opens new windows to our own unending search for an understandable national identity."
--Harold Holzer, author and Chairman of Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Foundation
A historian's investigation of the life and times of Gen. George Gordon Meade to discover why the hero of Gettysburg has failed to achieve the status accorded to other generals of the conflict.

Covers Meade's career from his part in the Mexican-American War through his participation in the great Civil War engagements, including Second Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and Petersburg

Available for the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg

Explores Meade's legacy today at reenactments, battlefields, museums, and institutions that preserve history

        About the Author

As editor of Historic Traveler magazine, Tom Huntington developed a love for writing that merged stories from the past with journeys of discovery in the present. That was the approach he took with his first two books, Ben Franklin's Philadelphia and Pennsylvania Civil War Trails, and one he continues with Searching for George Gordon Meade. Huntington's writing has also appeared in Civil War Times, America's Civil War, American History, American Heritage, Smithsonian, America in WWII, Air & Space/Smithsonian, and Invention & Technology. 5.0 out of 5 stars Rescuing a hero, and much more!, March 8, 2013
        By Ralph H. Peters

This review is from: Searching for George Gordon Meade: The Forgotten Victor of Gettysburg (Hardcover)

Superbly researched, well-written and balanced in its judgments, this book deserves much more attention than it has gotten thus far. With the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg approaching, we're overdue for a fresh, objective look at George Gordon Meade, the battle's victor and a man treated unfairly by history. Union generals jealous of Meade's success, Lee partisans who still cannot bear that their hero was defeated soundly in a fair fight, and Civil-War-era journalists offended that Meade refused to pander to them (Sheridan, by contrast, served newspapermen champagne and oysters) all did what they could to minimize Meade's achievements. Yet, this man, assuming command barely three days before a great, decisive battle, defeated an army accustomed to victory with an army all too used to being defeated. Given a strategic mission, he made astute operational decisions and performed brilliantly as a hands-on tactical commander (Meade's performance on the afternoon and evening of July 2nd, 1863, was nothing short of brilliant--and brave). But this "victor of Gettysburg" did far more for his country: He commanded the Army of the Potomac until the end of the war, that army's only commander not relieved. And even before Gettysburg, Meade had proven himself to be a fearless, first-rate soldier.

A complex man who mixed a classic sense of honor with a terrible temper, and military skill with (what we would call) public-relations ineptitude, he was one of the very few generals on either side not poisoned with personal ambition and he did his duty without scheming against his peers (who were by no means unwilling to scheme against Meade). Widely respected in his own time, then largely written out of history, Meade deserves better. This fine, highly readable book is a good start in this great general's rehabilitation. Employing a winning technique, the author visits the key sites of Meade's career, from the Mexican border to the bloody fields of Virginia and on to Gettysburg, so, along with learning about Meade's life and service, the reader also learns a great deal about the state of those hallowed battlefields today (and what must be done to rescue more of their sacred soil), as well as about many a good man and woman keeping faith with our past. How good is the book? I received an early copy and provided a jacket blurb, but, just this week, I picked up the book again and re-read it as part of my own research. Impressed for a second time, I felt compelled to add an amazon review, in the hope that more readers will discover a worthy book about an authentic hero.

This review is from: Searching for George Gordon Meade: The Forgotten Victor of Gettysburg (Hardcover)

The book is full of information that I didn't know. I'm still reading it. My only complaint is that the battle scenes seem to drag instead of excite. I've just gotten to the Gettysburg battle, the first day, and it's interesting because of the commanders who are directing the battle.

        My Review:

, Three out of Five Stars; Other than THAT, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the Play?

        by Pastor Lindstedt

I make a review of when I get a free downloadable book for my Kindle. I'd say that fewer than one in a hundred do I actually read, and of them that I quickly scan over in order to make a quick review to my friends is more like one oi a couple of hundred. The point of my review is to get people to make a free download within a few day period and then to read it as useful to them.

These Stackpole Military History Series Kindle e-books are always a good deal. I and my readers love books about war, especially if written by Germans or Southerners or the Politically Incorrect.

The author takes a look at Major-General George Meade, a competent Union general who took command of the Union Army of the Potomac a few days before Gettysburg, and beat Robert E. Lee, the defeated demi-god who foolishly destroyed his own army in a pointless war of attrition. Meade was never a "meat-grinder" Union butcher like Grant and most of the Union generals, but rather used his army as efficiently more than most Union generals. Thus Meade defeated Lee at Gettysburg Even more tellingly, the Army of the Potomac was commanded by Meade for the duration of the war. Meade was never a back-stabber or conniver or a panderer to the newspapermen of the day like Sheridan and others. Meade served the Union army after the Civil War until his death in 1872.

Meade is the "forgotten general" of the Civil War. The South raised up Robert E. Lee and "The Sacred Cause" while the successful Union generals went on to the Presidency or to the Little Big Horn. But the fact of the matter is that almost none of the Confederate generals, especially Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson, had any strategic vision. They fought a war of attrition against Union forces that outnumbered them by three or six or ten to their one. Grant was nothing more than a butcher more than willing to lose two or three Union soldiers for every Rebel soldier until Lee ran out of soldiers and was surrounded at Appomattox. The strategy which should have been used was the same one that George Washington used after he lost the Battle of New York of never fighting without a chance of success and an escape route for his forces. Lee should have split up his forces into a few 20,000 armies to make a mass incursion expensive and then, like the Boer commandos, made 500 or 1000 man raids like Quantrill did to Kansas against the Midwest states of Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois to destroy food crops and the will to continue to support Lincoln.

In every civil war, victory usually goes to the side willing to commit any and every atrocity in order to win by destroying any chance of political peace. Nathan Bedford Forrest and William Quantrill thus has more strategic sense than did Robert E. Lee, as did William T. Sherman, Phil Sheridan, and Abraham Lincoln, the Great Melungeon Tyrant and mass-murderer. Robert E. Lee got canonized for being a "good loser." And thus George Meade, a decent and competent soldier, and humane man, was altogether forgotten, although he beat Robert Lee without benefit of overwhelming material and numerical superiority.

It was a workmanlike book, but the author insists on judging 19th Century men by 21st Century notions. Very few White men liked negro slaves, and thus contrary to the now Politically-Correct yammerings that "The Civil War was about slavery", nobody, including the Tyrant Lincoln dared say any such thing, even to Northern audiences who had to support the war. Most Northern or Border states had actual laws against "free negros". Missouri had in the preamble to the 1821 State Constitution provisions for a thousand dollar fine and six months hard labor for anyone daring to bring in "free negroes." No state, except perhaps Massachusetts wanted any wandering free negroes in their states and laws were made as such. Thus the Civil War -- at least in the minds of the White Men of the time -- was NOT about slavery. The Civil War was about who would be in power and whose interests would be served. The mercantile North or the agrarian South. And the South lost a civil war, based upon the considerations of all such wars, especially civil wars, over who would rule and who would serve. Most civil wars end in the destruction of the Empire.

Which is why I'll give this book a "Three out of Five-Star" Rating. It is inexcusable for a "historian" to populate ancient history with modern 'men.' Otherwise an excellent book, but as a modern joke puts it: "Other than THAT, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?"

This review is from: Edgar Allan Poe: Complete Tales & Poems (Illustrated) (Top Five Classics) (Kindle Edition)

There is no shortage of Edgar Allan Poe ebook collections available in the Kindle Store, but what sets this one apart is its excellent formatting, particularly of the poetry. Many other sets fail to properly display the poetry in the original stanzas and verse patterns; this one does it perfectly. The prose is equally well-formatted using traditional paragraph indention rather than space to distinguish paragraphs, and emphasized words are appropriately italicized. Clarifying notes are appended and in contrasting typefaces. The short quotation from Plato appearing at the onset of "Morella" actually appears (prior to its translation) in original Greek characters--not merely in English transliteration; compare other ebook editions to see how many--IF ANY--do that! One TOC lists titles chronologically and another lists them alphabetically; both are convenient and active. Right/left clicking also permits back and forth movement between title content. Overall this is a very handsome and (insofar as I can detect) flawless ebook.

Edgar Allan Poe certainly does not need me to explain either his greatness or his continued popularity; suffice it to say he is a great American author whose works truly deserve to be read, and I certainly enjoy reading and re-reading his numerous tales and poems. For that reason, I want a reasonably complete and well-formatted "keeper" copy for my Kindle--and this is it. (The numerous illustrations are a plus.)

I obtained my copy when it was (remarkably) offered for free, but even at its regular price of $2.99, I would highly recommend this particular edition over all others. As I said earlier, there is no shortage of Poe collections, but having purchased a few and sampled many, this is not only the very best, but the most perfect available in the Kindle Store.

Like most college students having to take American Literature as a humanity course I read a few Edgar Allen Poe short stories; as I remember it was "The Tell-Tale Heart", and "The Pit and the Pendulum." But what I remember most is hearing in the dorm room the sounds of The Allen Parsons Project from the vinyl album devoted to Edgar Allen Poe. The strains of "The Raven" was played about every day by the guy in the adjoining dorm room.

Anyway, this particular anthology of Edgar Allen Poe seems to be complete, well formatted (as I downloaded it and clicked the links within the e-book) and it works. Best of all, it is a free download. I recommend that those reading my blog and forum with a Kindle or a computer or tablet do download it forthwith.

            Book Description

            Publication Date: January 15, 2011
            (568 pages in print edition)

BULLETS RAIN DOWN UPON A PACKED FOOTBALL STADIUM, killing dozens, and triggering a panic stampede which leads to a thousand more deaths. A police marksman kills the sniper, a mentally unbalanced Desert Storm veteran holding a smoking assault rifle. It's an open and shut case, or so America is led to believe...

In the aftermath of the stadium massacre, an outraged public demands an end to the threat posed by assault rifles, and Congress passes emergency legislation banning their private possession. American gun owners have one week to turn in their semi-automatic rifles, or face mandatory five year federal prison terms.

Jimmy Shifflett, the alleged stadium sniper, is linked to a shadowy "gun club" in southeastern Virginia, which the FBI believes is a cover for a secret right wing militia terror group. Those who knew Shifflett the best don't believe he was a member of any militia, or that he was guilty of the horrific mass murder.

But if he didn't fire the "assault rifle" into the stadium, who did, and why?

A small band of Virginians, thrown together by fate, is forced to undertake a desperate odyssey through a minefield of government blackmail, official deception and covert death squads, to discover the truth behind the stadium massacre, and save their own lives.

4.0 out of 5 stars A review from John Ross, January 17, 2004
            By A Customer

This review is from: Enemies Foreign And Domestic (Paperback)

I have several complaints about most thriller novelists. First, their protagonists are too often 100% virtuous with no humanizing flaws. Second, the protagonists let their enemies live when you KNOW the bad guys are going to come back and murder their kids etc. Third, everything the government does (hi-tech weapons, military & police tactics, criminal investigations, etc.) functions flawlessly. Fourth, too many stories have all the brilliant thinking and brave actions done by government employees (Special Forces, policemen, Intelligence operatives, etc.) Lastly, some novels have a basic premise that is just not believable. (Clancy's RAINBOW SIX is a prime example.)
Novelist Matthew Bracken has avoided these sins almost entirely in his excellent debut novel ENEMIES FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC.

It is a challenge for any writer to come up with a plot that is at once plausible enough to have the reader accept it but also unlikely enough that it has not actually happened yet in real life. EFAD's dramatic concept is this: A lone mid-level ATF executive engineers (with one accomplice) a tragic mass shooting incident and successfully arranges for an addled, destitute veteran to take the blame and be killed in the process.

He does this to create an emergency that will encourage the President to embrace a plan he has put together: Forming a secret "hit squad" comprised of overaggressive ATF agents with disciplinary problems. This squad's duty is to be proactive: identify domestic terrorists ("militia members") and kill them during raids. The trial is in the media, when the cameras see the (planted) contraband retrieved from the slain terrorist's dwelling. The antagonist wants to have this hit squad for the obvious reasons: funding, power, and prestige.

Naturally, some of the victims drawn into the web of treachery decide they have no choice but to fight back.

At each point in the storyline, as the good guys and bad guys acted and reacted, I kept asking myself if what was happening was plausible. How would *I* rewrite it to make it more believable? In some cases I thought that I would have had the parties react a bit differently, but I had to admit my alternate scenario was not necessarily more likely.

The fact is that when you get into the realm of serious, institutionalized government abuse of power in an environment with lots of resourceful, angry, well-armed people and the near-instant information flow of the Internet, you're in uncharted waters.

One critic said the female lead was an adolescent fantasy (21 yo, beautiful, motorcycle rider, expert shot, virgin) and I would have given her more edginess, but hey, a lot of readers like their heroes untainted.

Anyway, EFAD is an action-packed read, with most of the skill and creativity being demonstrated by the private sector, which is IMO 100% realistic.

Send a copy to your favorite Senator or Congressman...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good story but..., June 28, 2012

            Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

This review is from: Enemies Foreign And Domestic (The Enemies Trilogy) (Kindle Edition)

            First the good:
The overall plot is pretty good and, unfortunately, believable. That the actions of a few could set off such a series of chain reactions is plausible, and I was willing to go along for the ride to see how the story ended. And, while it didn't have the ending I was hoping for, I wasn't disappointed. The plot is almost Orwellian, a parable of what could happen in our government and how some would probably respond to it if it did.

The author's descriptions of weapons and tactics are much more believable than typical fiction, and orders of magnitude better than film or television.

Since this is part of a trilogy, I was worried that it would not complete it's own story. But the events conclude satisfactorily. The characters obviously have more to do, but you won't feel cheated if you decide to only read this book.

            Then the bad:

I feel that the book was too long. I read it on the Kindle, so I didn't have a page count, but the print edition runs 580 pages. The book would be much better if trimmed by 200 pages or so. Much of the dialogue and story was overly repetitive, especially the protagonist's inner dilemma (trying to avoid spoilers). I also appreciate the author's technical expertise, but the full make and model of vehicles and weapons was repeated too often.

For all the book's success in describing the guns and plot, it is less believable in the details of people's behavior. The bit of romance in the book is pretty lackluster, with the guy at one point describing the girl's legs as "the prettiest legs he's ever seen on a real girl, one who wasn't dancing on a stage". And there is a scene where someone is released from a pretty awful situation, only to start complaining about bug bites. These and other scenes completely pulled me out of the story, they fit so poorly.

And the dialogue is a mixed bag. At times, it is crisp and spot on. I can hear the characters and the dialogue fits their personalities perfectly. At other times, it is preachy and overly descriptive, so it comes off as unnatural.

            Overall conclusion:
The book has a lot of strengths, the story is good, and Bracken definitely has talent. But it's lengthiness and repetition really wears you down. I recommend it with reservations, and a warning to know what you are in for.

This review is from: Enemies Foreign And Domestic (Paperback)

Matthew Bracken's book is a well written story with a different take on safety and security than what the authors of "The Patiot Act" had when they talked about safety and security. It is a story of some of the people deciding that the Government that governs best, governs least. These people come into conflict with a government of wolves dedicated to seeking power. These government individuals demonstrate the old saying that a people who are sheep must in time beget a government of wolves. Mr. Bracken's story is about how this get's worked out. Recommended highly.

            My Review:

4.0 out of 5 stars Justifiable and Prescient Paranoia both in 2003 and 2013, October 15, 2013

The most important thing in my review of the Free Kindle Book of the Day is to make such a review so that my forum, blog and e-mail readership can download the book while it is still free. Thus I don't have time to read more than the prologue, some of the middle, and the last chapter or so. However, by actually reviewing this book, I have already taken some sort of steps to ensure that it is downloaded and read because out of a Kindle Library of nearly 2,000 books -- most of them gotten free -- I've reviewed less than twenty of them, or less than one percent.

This particular book, an act of fiction, was written in 2003, published in paperback in September 2003 and formatted into Kindle in 2011. Thus the scenario projected in which a renegade agent of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms deliberately provokes action to seize White AmurriKwa's firearms based upon a White ex-soldier with psychological problems based upon fighting in ZOG's foreign wars being made into a sort of "Manchurian Oswald" was believable when this book was legacy published back in 2003. This was after Ruby Ridge and Waco, but before Timothy McVeigh and the Oklahoma City bombing, and even before the BATF "Fast and Furious" provocation in which the BATF sold guns to the Mexican drug cartels in order to justify disarming White America. Since then there have been more and more off what most AmurriKwans believe are more Mossad-FBI false-flag operations such as the Aurora Colorado and Sandy Hook Connecticut shootings which are used as excuses by "progressive" and jew politicians to create legistreason to disarm working and middle-class White AmurriKwans and set up a Soviet Bolshevik regime in which White AmurriKwans are all put in a FEMA camp and later put to death.

The end result is justifiable paranoia, in which everyone goes out to buy guns and ammo, as back in 1996, 2001, 2009, and now in 2013, so much so that nobody can buy .22 ammo or in other popular calibers. The end result is increased paranoia and distrust on all sides.

When I helped found and run two public militias from Winter 1993 to when they were disbanded in Summer 1997 and went underground, I've already heard and seen it all before. There is a reason why John Ross, whose book, "UnIntended Consequences," was one of the 1990s Classics in the Militia Movement, reviewed this book so highly: It is pretty much the same thing as what he wrote himself.

The author has two more books in the series, probably fictionalizing another popular book from the mid-nineties: Thomas Chittum's "Civil War II." There is an anthology by the author which is more up to date. But it should be understood that what was said in the Nineties and 'Aughts are being said today, but with even more altogether justified paranoia.

The book is long at 580+ pages. It is what I'd call "Second Amendment Right to Keep & Bare Arms Porn." I notice that those who are avid Second Amendment rights give this long book four or five stars. Those who are anti-Second Amendment and hate the idea of White People arming themselves to overthrow an alien and foreign government give this book only two or one star.

This is exactly the sort of book I like, even though the author will likely make some painful evasions in order to prove that he "ain't racist." I'll give it four stars though. Brevity has its charms, as anyone reading Dr. William Pierce's "The Turner Diaries" which was also a 1990s Classic can attest to.

This review is from: Domestic Enemies: The Reconquista (Paperback)

Reconquista (Marxist invasion, land reform), US apathy/cooperation, restrictive gun control, anti-terrorism legislation and other extra-constitutional government excesses--all these elements support a non-stop, action filled new story about our favorite dark-haired, avengatrix, Ranya Bardiwell, six years after we last left her in Enemies Foreign and Domestic (EFD).

Sequels seldom live up to readers' expectations. However, the fertile ground prepared in Matthew Bracken's first work is not wasted. We discover Ranya eeking out an existence in a camp for politcal prisoners, with no hope of release or knowledge of the whereabouts of her child. I had read the first few chapters of the novel online last year and was primed for resolution. As the story/threads developed, I could anticipate to some degree where we were going, but Bracken skillfully keeps you guessing.

I especially appreciate Bracken's accurate depiction of weapons use, unlike much of the outlandish skills of many greater-than-life protagonists in other works in this genre. What makes his two works sing in my estimation are the carefully crafted 3D characters who exist in a world not improbable.

A good read, with educational theme, as in his ENEMIES FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC. Read the other book first!! The obligatory sex got a lot more explicit in this one, and cost the book one star in my estimation. If you're in to that, then consider this a four star review.

The plot and the heroine definitely gets "more edgy" in this one, but this is hardly a novel for the feminist. Open Border supporters will not enjoy this book. Again, lots of meaningful content, not just a shootemup novel.

There are two kinds of people in Matthew Bracken books - unquestioning 'patriots' who are as unswerving and maniacal in their devotion to the conservative creed as their counterparts, the evil 'statists' are to the evils of socialism. All politicians are corrupt while government exists only to enslave hard workers and provide 'undesirables' cushy lives at their expense. Blah, blah, blah.

Honestly, there are people who think this guy is a prophet because he feeds their need to make them feel noble and justify their hatred for anyone not like them. In Bracken's world, political compromise is impossible and solutions only come from the barrel of a gun. His only goal is to outrage and fuel further division, stoking his readers' desire to hear of the dark future that awaits our country if violence is not used to stop it.

              My Review:

The most important thing in my review of the Free Kindle Book of the Day is to make such a review so that my forum, blog and e-mail readership can download the book while it is still free. Thus I don't have time to read more than the prologue, some of the middle, and the last chapter or so. However, by actually reviewing this book, I have already taken some sort of steps to ensure that it is downloaded and read because out of a Kindle Library of nearly 2,000 books -- most of them gotten free -- I've reviewed less than twenty of them, or less than one percent.

This particular book, is the second in a trilogy taking place six years after the first book of the trilogy, Enemies Foreign and Domestic and written eight years after the first book. For four days this book will be a free Kindle download, then around October 28th, the last book of the trilogy will be a free Kindle download.

The A-rab AmurriKwan girlfriend of the hero of the first book is in a labor camp and from what I gather she ends up fighting the masses of beaners, the whigger AmurriKwans not being up to the job.

Anyway, a militia friend of mine from the 90s with a good voice read the material and says that the author is legit. So I'll write a more thorough review when I've gotten around to reading more than the first two chapters.

For now, still a free Kindle download. Get it for free while you can.

Foreign Enemies And Traitors" is set in the near future in an America that is creeping steadily toward socialist tyranny, in the midst of the second Great Depression. A year after earthquakes have devastated the Tennessee Valley, survivors are resisting demands by the federal government to relocate to FEMA refugee centers. United States National Guard units have proven ineffective at forcing these survivors out of the earthquake-damaged regions, due to their reluctance to employ deadly force against fellow Americans. As a result, the president has invited so-called foreign peacekeeping battalions to do the work of forcibly relocating the holdouts. The novel follows a small group of determined survivors in their resistance to the foreign enemies, and the American traitors who are their allies.

5.0 out of 5 stars Treason from the Left!, May 23, 2009
                By Nelson Hultberg
This review is from: Foreign Enemies And Traitors (Perfect Paperback)

Will America survive the upcoming years as a "sovereign nation," or will the hideous dream of one-world government be our fate? This is the paramount issue facing America in the 21st century; it transcends all other concerns.

In Foreign Enemies and Traitors, Matt Bracken has created a brilliant Atlas Shrugged like narrative of how this issue might play out amidst the economic meltdown now consuming us. Conservatives and libertarians throughout America will take to this tale like the colonists took to Tom Paine in 1776.

As the story begins, the Second Great Depression (what Bracken has dubbed the "Greater Depression") rages throughout America. The country is splitting up geographically with several secessionist movements in response to a radical leftist administration recently ushered into power in Washington. But the country has also been struck with a horrific earthquake that levels Memphis, TN and the surrounding Mississippi River valley. This causes massive panic made all the worse by hordes of refugees, pillaging war lords, and the inevitable reversion to barbarism that such societal collapses bring.

In response to the chaos resulting from the economic depression, the secessionist movements and the earthquake, America's President has invited "foreign troops" under the aegis of U.N. control into the country to try and suppress the rebels and establish a powerful centralized government again under Washington's grip.

Mr. Bracken thrusts into this mix a cast of heroic characters with names like Boone Vikersun and Phil Carson (think Daniel and Kit if your historical memory is sluggish) -- to fight a guerrilla war in, of all places, the state of Tennessee against the overweening powers of a grotesquely corrupt Washington. Pure gold! Boone and Carson in the 21st century fighting for the Republic.

The female lead, Jenny McClure, is a winsome, feisty teenager -- just waking up to the cruelty of an adult world turned upside down -- and about as courageous as humans get. Upon reading of her trials and how she measures up to them, the emotion felt is twofold: immense awe and the hope that if life's tribulations ever presented such dilemmas to ourselves, our reactions would be equally as spirited in manner.

The book's galvanic plot is tension-packed and unfolds with startling surprises right up to the end. Numerous scenes occur throughout in which courage, patriotism, and honor come into play in such emotionally riveting ways as to bring a physical tingling sensation to the back of one's neck.

At stake is a clash of governing philosophies between the socialist left and the free-enterprise right, between the "new Constitution" illegally rammed through in a panicky Constitutional Convention and the "old Constitution" which spawned America from the beginning and was the law of the land for 125 years until collectivists degraded it into a "living document" to be reinterpreted with Mad Hatter's logic.

Overlying all this is the defense backbone of the nation -- our military forces -- and what side they must choose in this epic clash between the treasonous forces of the new-world order in Washington and the loyalist forces of freedom amidst the patriotic states. The former trumpets the "new" Constitution and its implementation, while the latter fights for the "old" Constitution and its restoration. Which Constitution do we uphold? The military's leading generals must decide which to defend, and it makes for a crackerjack story that will keep you reading late into the night as Bracken's trio of Americanist heroes -- Boone, Carson, and Jenny -- are drawn into one escapade after another to defend the rebellious states and attempt to take the country back from a quisling President and his perverse entourage of socialist apparatchiks.

Bracken writes vividly and integrates all the subtle nuances of today's leftist media / academy brainwash into the dialogue. His grasp of their pernicious semantic twistings is impeccable. Moreover the didacticism of the book is written into the scenes perfectly. No long-winded lectures to take away from the pace of the story; but numerous pithy and powerful expressions of what freedom, the Constitution, and America are all about come forth from his characters.

Foreign Enemies and Traitors could be one of those "turning point" books of American history. I only hope that someone like Glenn Beck or Patrick Buchanan will read it. It is a book that would explode on the charts if they started promoting it. Of course, the political left will come down on this tome like a blitzkrieg to try and kill the message of its talented author if it looks like widespread popularity is coming his way. But that goes with the territory when one writes of patriotism and honor in an era that worships acquiescence and popularity.

This is a book that all freedom-loving Americans will enjoy immensely -- not just because it is a cogent political accounting of what America's problems are and what the military's proper response to the constitutional implications must be, but also because it is a splendid, scintillating story. The author has combined the two areas of "message" and "plot" together in a most persuasive and entertaining manner. Move over Tom Clancy.

I was born in NYC and graduated from Vassar College in 1975. I also gained an M.A. in history at New York University. I moved to Baltimore in 1981 and have been here ever since. As soon as I moved here I became fascinated with the US Army's 29th Infantry Division because so many of my neighbors served in it. I have been very honored not only to know past members of the division well, but also its current members, since I serve as Historian for the Maryland National Guard. Both the old and young soldiers are fabulous people and always keep my life interesting. In my spare time, I play the piano and participate in various sports activities as much as I can.

A well researched book that flows extremely well. The author describes the division's formation, training, and preparations for the invasion of Normandy. The author also describes the German 352nd Infantry Division (primary opponent of the 29th Infantry Division in Normandy) it's background and formation. The author then compares the commanders, each nation's tactics, and overall battle strategy for the Normandy invasion.

The description of the initial assaults into Omaha landing zone is sobering, whole companies annihilated. As the author describes the follow-on landings and the eventual US breakthrough, the author goes into a "what if" analysis. What if the German high command and Division commander followed Rommel's strategy to place more troops on the beach zones. What if one extra German infantry battalion or regiment had been defending the landing zones, would the US troops been able to move inland? What if one panzer regiment was in proximity to counterattack the first day?

The author then writes of the deadly fighting in the hedgerows in trying to capture St. Lo. This becomes a very sobering point. The author notes that the 29th Infantry Division spent 8 weeks in Normandy, and took in 15,000 replacements to maintain the fighting strength of the 14,000 soldier Division.

The 82nd Airborne Division (approx. 8500 troops) spent 4 weeks in Normandy and took approx, 45% casualties (according to official records). Quite the comparison in roles and casualties suffered when not being able to pulled from the front line to receive and integrate replacements. The similar is described in The Battle for the Hurtgen Forest (Charles MacDonald) where the US took 28,000 casualties in series of deadly infantry attacks in a deep forest that reduced whole US Infantry Divisions, including the 1st and 28th.

In the Band of Brother (Ambrose) Easy Company spent years training, as did the 29th Infantry Div, jumped into Normandy, and was pulled off the fighting line to refit while the Infantry Divisions fought straight on. Ambrose considers that Easy Company was the best in Europe in late 1944. But when one compares Easy Company (part of the 101st Airborne Division) to those in the 29th Infantry as described in this book, the 29th had it much harder trying to maintain its proficiency and effectiveness due to the time spent in the front lines. Easy company was also more fortunate not to have been a landing boat in the 1st wave into Omaha where entire companies were lost or reduced to a handful of soldiers.

One note the author makes is the different leadership styles of the commanders along with the differences and initial bias against the Reserve and National Guard officers by the active duty, West Point graduate, Division Commander. Once the campaign wore on, several ineffective active duty officers were replaced, sometimes by National Guard officers. The point of the matter, where a person gains their commission is not important as to how a person performs their role and successfully accomplishes the mission while caring for their troops. Note: Colin Powell is an ROTC graduate and achieved success based on his performance, not on where he received his commission.

Good book and different perspective that is balanced and offers good comparisons on the combatants involved.

Look, I know I'm going to catch some flack for not rating this book higher but let me tell you why I feel I'm justified. This book describes the 29th Division from their long stay in England to the difficult capture of St.Lo about a month after D-Day. It's an excellent history with some of the best detail describing the trip from England to the beach. Also, there is extreme detail of the American theory of attack vs. the German's which is quite interesting. There is quite a difference, particularly in the use of firepower and movement of troops.

But where the book fails vs. a Stephon Ambrose type book is the lack of personal attachment to the individuals. Where a Stephan Ambrose book clearly takes most of the information from detailed soldier interviews, this books seemed to take all it's information from military journals of the war. It read so clinically I wondered if soldiers were interviewed to get the human side of the story. Reading the bibliography, it claims there were interviews.

I am so intrigued by the sacrifice made by our WWII veterans. I just don't feel this did justice to these men. It might be better read by someone studying the war in college from a tactical standpoint. I'd recommend Band of Brothers or Ghost Soldiers for stories of WWII that better let you feel the emotion of the fight. Not a bad book. Just didn't totally attach the reader to the soldiers who sacrificed so much.

                  My Review:

The most important thing in my review of the Free Kindle Book of the Day is to make such a review so that my forum, blog and e-mail readership can download the book while it is still free. Thus I don't have time to read more than the prologue, some of the middle, and the last chapter or so. However, by actually reviewing this book, I have already taken some sort of steps to ensure that it is downloaded and read because out of a Kindle Library of nearly 2,000 books -- most of them gotten free -- I've reviewed less than twenty of them, or less than one percent. My format is to take the most favorable useful review, the least favorable useful review, along with what the Kindle seller's page says about the number of pages and about the author.

This particular book, is the first from this military historian from Baltimore detailing the exploits of the 29th Infantry Division, a National Guard Division, from Maryland and Eastern Pennsylvania and Northern Virginia, as it took part in fighting from the fiercely contested Omaha Beach. Later historical books in the series of four or five goes to the fighting in the Huertgen Forest to the invasion of Germany. Balkowski covers the military history of the division from his area of the country thoroughly.

All of these Stackpole Military History books cover aspects of their particular topic pretty thoroughly. Best of all, when they are free downloads, there is no reason not to download and read at your leisure, be it on a tablet, a Kindle, or a computer screen.

I might well do a further review when I've read more of this free book.

                    Book Description

                    Publication Date: August 21, 2011
Eugene Debs Hartke (named after the famous early 20th century Socialist working class leader) describes an odyssey from college professor to prison inmate to prison warden back again to prisoner in another of Vonnegut's bitter satirical explorations of how and where (and why) the American dream begins to die. Employing his characteristic narrative device--a retrospective diary in which the protagonist retraces his life at its end, a desperate and disconnected series of events here in Hocus Pocus show Vonnegut with his mask off and his rhetorical devices unshielded.

Debs (and Vonnegut) see academia just as imprisoning as the corrupt penal system and they regard politics as the furnishing and marketing of lies. Debs, already disillusioned by circumstance, quickly tracks his way toward resignation and then fury. As warden and prisoner, Debs (and the reader) come to understand that the roles are interchangeable; as a professor jailed for ""radical"" statements in the classroom reported by a reactionary student, he comes to see the folly of all regulation. The ""hocus pocus"" of the novel's title does not describe only the jolting reversals and seemingly motiveless circumstance which attend Debs' disillusion and suffering, but also describe the political, social, and economic system of a country built upon can't, and upon the franchising of lies.

At 68, Vonnegut had not only abandoned the sentiment and cracked optimism manifest in Slaughterhouse-Five, he had abandoned any belief in the system or faith for its recovery. This novel is another in a long series of farewells to the farmland funeral rites of childhood.

                    ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Kurt Vonnegut was born in Indianapolis in 1922. He studied at the universities of Chicago and Tennessee and later began to write short stories for magazines. His first novel, Player Piano, was published in 1951 and since then he has written many novels, among them: The Sirens of Titan (1959), Mother Night (1961), Cat's Cradle (1963), God Bless You Mr Rosewater (1964), Welcome to the Monkey House; a collection of short stories (1968), Breakfast of Champions (1973), Slapstick, or Lonesome No More (1976), Jailbird (1979), Deadeye Dick (1982), Galapagos (1985), Bluebeard (1988) and Hocus Pocus (1990). During the Second World War he was held prisoner in Germany and was present at the bombing of Dresden, an experience which provided the setting for his most famous work to date, Slaughterhouse Five (1969). He has also published a volume of autobiography entitled Palm Sunday (1981) and a collection of essays and speeches, Fates Worse Than Death (1991).

Kurt Vonnegut is one of the most beloved American writers of the twentieth century. Vonnegut's audience increased steadily since his first five pieces in the 1950s and grew from there. His 1968 novel Slaughterhouse-Five has become a canonic war novel with Joseph Heller's Catch-22 to form the truest and darkest of what came from World War II.

Vonnegut began his career as a science fiction writer, and his early novels -- Player Piano and The Sirens of Titan -- were categorized as such even as they appealed to an audience far beyond the reach of the category. In the 1960s, Vonnegut became closely associated with the Baby Boomer generation, a writer on that side, so to speak.

Now that Vonnegut's work has been studied as a large body of work, it has been more deeply understood and unified. There is a consistency to his satirical insight, humor and anger which makes his work so synergistic. It seems clear that the more of Vonnegut's work you read, the more it resonates and the more you wish to read. Scholars believe that Vonnegut's reputation (like Mark Twain's) will grow steadily through the decades as his work continues to increase in relevance and new connections are formed, new insights made.

                    ABOUT THE SERIES

Author Kurt Vonnegut is considered by most to be one of the most important writers of the twentieth century. His books Slaughterhouse-Five (named after Vonnegut's World War II POW experience) and Cat's Cradle are considered among his top works. RosettaBooks offers here a complete range of Vonnegut's work, including his first novel (Player Piano, 1952) for readers familiar with Vonnegut's work as well as newcomers.

This review is from: Hocus Pocus (Mass Market Paperback)

This is probably my favorite of all of Vonnegut's works. It's the story of an ex-military man who becomes a teacher at a school for learning-disabled rich kids. He eventually is fired from the school for telling the students what an embarrassment it is to be an American, and he is hired by the prison across the lake. The story only gets more cynical and more sentimental from there. As each character dies, and so it goes, they are buried in the shadow of Musket Mountain when the sun goes down, a nice, poetic touch on this deeply sarcastic look at the American ruling class. I loved the alternative history lesson provided in this book, it's nice to see the positive side of American socialism and the potential it once held way back at the start of the 20th century. Hocus Pocus is one of those books I go back to ever couple of years and re-read...I like it that much.

Allow me to begin by stating that I have read just about every book published by Kurt Vonnegut and have enjoyed most and positively loved several. In Hocus Pocus though, he seems to have just lost much of the magic that makes much of his work so special. Most of his books have me rushing to the end, they're hard to put down. This was the first book by him that I've ever had a tough time finishing. If it were not written by Vonnegut, i may have put it down for a little while. It is by no means a bad book, but just disappointing for such a master. Though some points are strong, they are rarely well made, the cynicism is elevated to ridiculous levels, and he seems to have forgotten how to be so artfully subtle. The morals and ideas are presented to you so much as they attempt to pound you on the head. I can't really say that I recommend this book to Vonnegut diehards because they will be disappointed, and I can't in good conscience recommend it to those wanting to get into Vonnegut, because it may be the last of his books they choose to read.

I've bought SlaughterHouse Five from this author, but didn't read it. Reading the first chapter of this book in which the protagonist identifies himself, he has a self-deprecating style which reminds me of a friend of mine I met in the NutHouse who killed his father with a claw hammer. The style is of someone who isn't satisfied with his life, but wouldn't want to live it in ignorance of what really goes on.

Exodus Lost reopens cold cases from antiquity and applies cutting-edge science, classical scholarship, and tenacity to solve them. The adventure begins with Aztec and Mayan chronicles of an epic voyage across the Atlantic Ocean. By mapping the details within these texts, the author tracks down their lost homeland and corroborates the local traditions of an ocean-crossing long before Columbus. This discovery leads to new insights into the origins of Mexican and Western civilizations, the Bible (including new archaeological evidence for two major biblical events), the alphabet, and much more. Enter a world of exploration and discovery, mystery and revelation. Whether your passion is archaeology or religion, history or simply a great adventure, Exodus Lost delivers.

Beautifully illustrated with 126 photos, maps, and engravings.

It is amazing how we take so many things for granted, how much we assume about the history of the New World. Before reading Exodus Lost, I was comfortable believing that Columbus had discovered America in 1492 and that maybe, just maybe, Leif Ericsson had landed in Newfoundland a few centuries before. I also knew that the Native Americans were thought to have crossed a land bridge from Asia across what is now the Bering Strait with no mention of Africa. Thanks to Compton's book, I can say with certainty that the Pre-Columbian world was linked beyond random encounters and coincidences. Through compelling examples backed up by hard facts, including the Bible, he links ancient Egypt with Mesoamerica, dispelling the teachings of traditional history textbooks.

You would expect a book like this to be long-winded and pedantic. Nothing could be farther from the truth! Compton's prose is succinct and informative, the kind of writing that makes you want to turn the page and see what's next. Despite having done thorough research, he doesn't get hung up on quoting and referencing scholarly works and riddling his text with footnotes. Instead, he makes sure to insert 126 beautiful photos, maps and engravings, making Exodus Lost all that more amenable. Each chapter is choc full of information on the ancient world and facts as well as hypotheses that will make you want to jump out of your seat. You will also probably ask yourself a few questions. One of mine was, "Why didn't they teach me that in school?"

This exquisite combination of informativeness and simplicity means that this book can be read by everyone, from the merely curious to historians and Bible scholars. For those of you who feel more comfortable reading this work in Spanish, you will be delighted to know that there is a Spanish translation, Éxodo Perdido, which I am happy to report is rendered so well in Spanish that I, a professional Spanish-English Translator with twenty years of experience, was unable to notice that it was indeed a translation and not the original work. This speaks well of the author, his choice of translator and reflects his scholarship and the general care invested in Exodus Lost. So I urge you to challenge your traditional textbook knowledge and uncover the mystery of the link between ancient Egypt and the New World and have a wonderful time along the way.

As a history major, former history teacher, and adult Sunday school teacher who also loves science fiction and historical novels, I found "Exodus Lost" to be fascinating. S.C. Compton thoroughly researched the topic, and "Exodus Lost" is heavily foot-noted with apparently solid references. The author made compelling connections between the ancient Old and New Worlds that heretofore I was unaware of. Even so, I had a nagging suspicion that he was cherry-picking information, and I remained unconvinced. The tipping point for me was the author's hypothesis for the source of Elijah's fire in the confrontation with the priests of Baal. Even though S.C. Compton includes the caveat "only suggest it as a small aside," his explanation of Elijah's fire cast a great deal of doubt in my mind as to the veracity of his entire work. I would thus be reluctant to cite "Exodus Lost" as a work of credible history. However, I do recommend the book for those readers who like to stretch the boundaries of conventional thinking.

Of all the books that I recommend that you download for free, this one is it. The author makes a case for proving that the origins of the Olmec founding civilization was of Whites from Egypt and Canaanites from Phoenicia. And contrary to the pretenses of Rabbi William Finck, the Phoenicians were known as Canaanites by those that they engaged in sharp practices with until 1200 BC, and then they changed their names, like Rabbi Eli James / Joseph November-Kutz-Putz to "Phoenicians" while knowing amongst themselves as Canaanites all along. The author also covers the Hyksos Kings and how Joseph managed to save up fertile harvests in the years before the 1650 BC volcanic destruction of Santorini / Atlantis followed by the volcanic winter of famine which brought forth the ownership of Egypt by the Pharoahs. And for those of you who are of non-Christian belief, the Solutrean origins of 12,000 to 7000 BC Pre-Columbine America are mentioned. This ought to provide grist for John DeNugent's and Harold Covington's mill.

Every White Nationalist and Christian Identity follower should download this extensively footnoted book, especially while it remains a free Kindle download today. You don't need a Kindle if you have a PC, or a tablet or smart-phone application. All you need is an Amazon account.

I might well do a further review when I've read more of this free book.

                        Publication Date: February 24, 2014

Almost a century after the battles of the First World War ended, their consequences remain imprinted on the political maps of Europe and much of the Middle East.

Did events justify Lloyd George's claim in 1914 that the Kaiser could fall `by knocking away the props'; isolating Germany by defeating her partners?

When Italy joined the Allies who was propping up whom?

Were sideshows in the Balkans, Iraq and Palestine integral to the war's general strategy, or were they simply old imperial rivalries resumed by other means?

A hundred years on, that moment in November 1918 when the fighting ceased on the Western Front is still remembered across nations: that symbolic eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.

'Victory 1918' examines the background to the Allied triumph and its aftermath. Might the Armistice in the forest of Compiegne have come sooner? Did American intervention have won the war and compromised the peace? How near did Germany come to denouncing the Armistice and resuming fighting in 1919?

But 'Victory 1918' is not only concerned with what happened in France and Flanders. There were four armistices that autumn. The Great War was a global conflict, with battlefronts on three continents. Retracing the path to Compiegne through the four-year struggle allows the reader to consider if a broader strategic vision might have brought an earlier victory.

'Victory 1918' is a masterful survey of one of history's great turning points, and offers a fresh interpretation of the war which, more than any other, determined the character of the twentieth century.

I'm 58 years old and I'm a Vietnam Veteran(and proud of it). But ever since I was a pre adolescent I have been facinated by the subject of the First World War! I have read many books about the Great War and I believe that this one is one of the best that I have Read!

Mr. Palmer has also written another book about the First World War, which I have not read, "The Gardeners of Salonika". After reading this book I shall try to read that one as well. One of the previous reviewers said that the author omitted the causes of the war and the first year or two of the war in this book. Well what about it! This book is titled "Victory 1918" not "A Complete History of World War I". In 368 pages the author does more to clarify and elucidate the war time situation than a dozen so called authoritive texts do.

Thank God, we have an author who sees through this obsession with the Western Front! PBS did a series several years ago entitled "The Great War and the Making of the Twentieth Century". Unfortunately 95 % of the series dealt only with the Western Front. Serbia, Palestine, Mesopotania, Africa, Balkans, Roumania, Italy, war at sea, etc. were totally ignored. I ask you as important as the Western Front was, don't you think some of the above had a greater impact on the developments of the 20'th century? Does the word OIL ring a bell?

In this book we are given an excellent picture of of the progression of the conflict in Mesopotamia(Iraq), Palestine, Balkans, Italy and the Western front from 1916 to the various Armistice agreements with Bulgaria, Turkey, Austria, Hungary and Germany. The various Russian Campaigns are not included. If you know even a smattering of Great War history you know that Russia was out of the war by 1917. And, I do not believe that they participated in any victory in World War One!

These campaigns and battles were no easy matter folks! We can look back on this long ago war, fought by millions of anonymous, distant actors with quaint stage props as hopelessly irrelevant. But they were fighting a war that they fervently believed in. Which is alot more than I can say about our current Mesopotanian mess! Palmer shows us the real people in that long ago war. It was all so terribly new and so very important in 1918. Alan Palmer captures that spirit in this book. This is a Great work of History!

This review is from: Victory 1918 (Hardcover)

In this sobering, comprehensive, and highly detailed account of the war he claims determined the social and political direction of the 20th century, acclaimed author Alan Palmer leads the reader through the incredibly bloody trench warfare of the First World War with an authority and informed discussion of the causes, battles, and results of this long, disastrous, and momentous conflict. Unlike previous efforts by other authors, Palmer does not neglect the many fronts other than the well-discussed European theater of operations. Rather, he weaves a wide-ranging discussion successfully linking the conflicts along the eastern "Russian" front as well as in the Balkan area (where the initial tripwire was pulled by the assassination in Sarajevo) were an integral part of this first world war, and also discusses the significance of the Middle Eastern and African theaters of operation to the progress and complications of the overall conflict.

This is indeed a serious, objective, and detailed look at the morass the civilized world slipped into as the chaos began in August of 1914. The author takes a country by country, front by front approach that illuminates and de-romanticizes the nature of the conflict, which according to the author was a blunt, indifferent and murderous affair, and one reads through pages of terrible detail full of hand to hand combat, the endless mud, virtual seas of rats and other vermin, and the sometimes overwhelming stench of decaying corpses. Palmer weaves the fact-rich text with a sense of the crushing ordeal for the men in the trenches, trapped by geography, terrain, climate and circumstance into a years-long stagnant war of attrition that was far more horrific than any large-scale warfare of the past. Of course, one of the key elements making it so terrible was the new weaponry developed with such precision in the new manufacturing facilities all over the otherwise "civilized" Europe. In this sense it was a frightening preview of what lay ahead for all the wars of the 20th century.

Palmer also carves out some controversial territory for himself by handily challenging conventional wisdom on a number of issues, such as the notion that it was the final desperate surge toward Paris late in the war that tipped the balance in favor of the Allies and against France. The author argues that it was in fact the global nature of the war and the fact that the Allies had so critically damaged the ability of the Germans to sustain its far-flung empire that kicked the chair out from under the Germans. There is also a lot of interesting and relevant information provided concerning the diplomatic and political efforts of Britain, France and Germany in the months leading up to the onset of the war that I read here for the first time. This is a wonderful book, and while I am not entirely convinced by some of the author's arguments for a few of the controversial positions, I have to applaud the extremely comprehensive, well-organized, and terrifically integrated account he provides of the war that has cast the terrible blood-filled cauldron for everything that followed so fatefully in its wake. Enjoy.

From the #1 bestselling author of History's Greatest Generals comes an exciting new book on the greatest explorers in history and how their discoveries shaped the modern world

Whether it is Rabban Bar Sauma, the 13th-century Chinese monk commissioned by the Mongols to travel West form a military alliance against the Islam; Marco Polo, who opened a window to the East for Europe; or Captain James Cook, whose maritime voyages of discovery created the global economy of the 21st century, each of these explorers had an indelible impact on modern society.

This book will look at the 11 greatest explorers in history. Some traveled for religious piety, such as Ibn Battuta, who travelled from North Africa to Indonesia in the 1300s, visiting every Islamic pilgrimage site between -- and becoming counselor to over 30 heads of state. Others traveled for profit, such as Ferdinand Magellan, who wanted to consolidate Spain's holdings on the spice trade. Others traveled for the sheer thrill of adventure, such as Victorian explorer Richard Francis Burton, who learned 29 languages, went undercover as a Muslim on a pilgrimage to Mecca, and wrote 50 books on topics ranging from a translation of the Kama Sutra to a manual on bayonet exercises. Still others travelled for discovery, such as Ernest Shackleton, who led two dozen men to the bottom of the world in an attempt to cross Antarctica on foot.

Whatever their reason for discovery, these explorers still inspire us today to push the limits of human achievement -- and discover something about ourselves in the process.

This review is from: Off the Edge of the Map: Marco Polo, Captain Cook, and 9 Other Travelers and Explorers That Pushed the Boundaries of the Known World (Paperback)

I just finished reading the book Off The Edge of the Map: Marco Polo, Captain Cook and 9 Other Travelers and Explorers That Pushed The Boundaries of the World by Michael Rank. Years ago, when I was in high school history was not one of my preferred subjects, but as I get older, I find myself becoming more and more interested in historical books. When I learned that I was going to be able to review this book, I was really pleased.

Michael Rank has written a very interesting book in which he selects eleven individuals who were pioneers in the truest sense of the word. Rank comes from the world of academia; he is a doctoral candidate in Middle Eastern history and so his opinions are based on years of post-secondary education in history. This is a fact that I appreciated. It is easy enough to select the commonly known explorers of old, and regurgitate their stories. Instead he selected a few historical figures who were unknown to me, but after reading their stories, I was amazed by their feats. I was also amazed that I had never heard of these people before.

For example, the author devotes a chapter to Ibn Battuta, a North African scholar who travelled throughout Africa and the Middle East for a number of years. When I read about his exploits, all of which took place in the 14th Century, without the benefit of modern conveniences, it was truly astonishing.

In another chapter, he tells the story of a Chinese monk named Rabban Bar Sauma, who is sometimes known as the reverse Marco Polo. He set out from the far East, and ventured west, a journey that I had never heard in any other contemporary historical textbook. The author’s background in Middle Eastern history really helps to bring Rabban Bar Sauma’s story to life. The perils faced upon his many travels were numerous, and the fact that he lived into his seventies seems almost incomprehensible.

Michael Rank also devotes chapters to many well-known explorers like Marco Polo, Captain James Cook, and Ferdinand Magellan. Even though I was familiar with these names, it was nice to re-read their stories with a more mature appreciation for the extent of their achievements.

Off The Edge of the Map was a really enjoyable book. I found Michael Rank’s writing style to be very well-informed, while still very readable. I did not get the sense that I was getting the same old version of a story that I had heard before. It was apparent that Rank’s research truly informed his writing, and for that I was truly appreciative.

If you are a person that enjoys reading story about notable historical figures, then I would highly recommend Off The Edge of the Map. An undisputed two thumbs up!

I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

Hotshot attorney Martin Vail must defend a young man accused of brutally murdering Archbishop Rushman, known as the "Saint of Lakeview Drive." This case looks impossible until his psychologist makes a discovery.

"Spine-tingling ... Mr. Diehl can sustain suspense."
                            --THE NEW YORK TIMES

Martin Vail, the brilliant "bad-boy" lawyer every prosecutor and politician loves to hate, is defending Aaron Stampler, a man found holding a bloody butcher's knife near a murdered archbishop. Vail is certain to lose, but Vail uses his unorthodox ways to good advantage when choosing his legal team--a tight group of men and women who must uncover the extraordinary truth behind the archbishop's slaughter. They do, in a heart-stopping climax unparalleled for the surprise it springs on the reader.

Clever twists and a bona fide surprise ending make this an above-average courtroom thriller, tapping into the post-O.J. scrutiny of our legal system in the case of a hotshot Chicago defense attorney (Richard Gere) whose latest client is an altar boy (Edward Norton) accused of murdering a Catholic archbishop. The film uses its own manipulation to tell a story about manipulation, and when we finally discover who's been pulling the strings, the payoff is both convincing and pertinent to the ongoing debate over what constitutes truth in the American system of justice. Making an impressive screen debut that has since led to a stellar career, Norton gives a performance that rides on a razor's edge of schizophrenic pathology -- his role is an actor's showcase, and without crossing over the line of credibility, Norton milks it for all it's worth. Gere is equally effective in a role that capitalizes on his shifty screen persona, and Laura Linney and Frances McDormand give memorable performances in their intelligently written supporting roles.

This review is from: Primal Fear (Kindle Edition)

A Bishop with an eminent standing in the local community is sadistically murdered by a teenager who was under his care, to the point that beyond the large amount of mortal wounds inflicted all over his body, his genital organs end up stuffed in his mouth .The potential perpetrator is a teenager suffering from a multiple personality disorder. Was he or his alter ego ?, is he accountable if his alter ego has done it ?, is multiple personality disorder a recognized mental disease ?, is the physical evidence found in the room where the crime took place good enough beyond reasonable doubt to nail the accused and punish him with the electric chair ?..., Is this situation real or is the accused actually faking the disorder? Was the murder premeditated ? Who is the Bishop indeed ?
Legal psycho thriller, with two great caracter developments, Vail, the flamboyant fiery defense attorney who is defending the teenager pro bono, and Aaron the defendant, who acts as an individual with two turning personalities, Aaron the gifted innocent hilbilly boy, and Roy the mean sadistic beast who cannot tell good from evil.

Then second half of the book where the ardent criminal trial unfolds, featuring lost of interesting questioning, is far more interesting and better writtten that the first half of the book which encompasses the heinous criminal act and ensuing investigation, the ending holds a great surprise, making the whole book worth reading.

The most important thing in my review of the Free Kindle Book of the Day is to make such a review so that my forum, blog and e-mail readership can download the book while it is still free. But the movie based on this novel was a pretty good movie when I saw it nearly 20 years ago.

I downloaded this e-book, and found it well-formatted.

My Review: 5 of 5 stars If there was a West Point for Racial Nationalist warlords then this book would be required reading, August 9, 2015

                              http://www.amazon.com/review/R18V8FQ...SIN=B013IBTPEY

In the past year Billy Roper has really cranked out five or six books, especially the "Hasten the Day" Trilogy and two or three other non-fiction books. I got this Kindle book as a free download although Billy Roper did send me two other of his books for review -- which I haven't reviewed just yet although I did read the first Hasten the Day novel.

"The Balk" is the most like Edgar Steele's "Defensive Racism" (from 2004) and Thomas Chittum's "Civil War II" (around 1995) in that Roper explains the numbers behind the demographic and political change ending the White dominance of the former United States of Amerika and predicts ongoing Balkanization into regional ethnostates of what Roper calls, ala Edgar Steele, "New America". Thus this quick and short book is also the non-fictional analog to Roper's fictional "Hasten the Day" trilogy in which Roper predicts that there will be a UN Dominated Protectorate along the East Coast, a Republic of Greater Texas, an Nuevo Atzlan, a New Africa, a Mormon Theocracy, a Chinese Military Protectorate on the West Coast. But the focus of Billy's novels and this non-fiction treatise is the "New America" consisting of 22 largely landlocked states of the former Midwest from Ohio to North Carolina to Arkansas to Kansas to Idaho and some Western English Provinces of Canada. This "New America" is thus largely an alliance of regional warlords legitimatized by a few trappings of a Constitutional Republic in which all the White ethnics know their place within a former America which is recovering from the Collapse.

Within 78 pages Roper crunches the latest demographic numbers and makes suggestions for personal survival as a family by both personal preparation and creating racial community within your neighborhood while it still is white. Thus this book, while not "prepper porn", is useful in that it provides an overview for your personal survival. The Militia Movement of the mid-90's after Waco had as its bible Chittum's Civil War II. Now there are from three to four times the demographic of much the same types of person, i.e. survivalists, but they no longer claim to be "militia" because none of them remotely think that there is any peaceful political solution to be found. They are preparing for Armageddon via race war and non-peaceful secession. So four times the numbers on the ground in "flyover country" but none of them wanting to be any part of the Empire. Thus there are not only the numbers already armed and ready, but a sizable warlord leadership class to make a "Neo-Aristocracy" petty warlord class when the Empire crashes and burns.

This Billy Roper's quick book should be required reading if there was a West Point for potential racial warlords wanting to run a local dictatorship arranged on theocratic lines who want to make regional alliances under color of law in order to mutually protect themselves against the mestizo, negro, and Chinese regional ethno-states. This short non-fictional predictive book is valuable merely if you are looking for suggestions as to how this dytopian future might play out.

The best thing about Roper cranking these books out is that as a result they are timely. They mention the shooting of five marines by a Muslim in Chattanooga within a month of it happening. Thus Roper by default is now the only one within our racial Nationalist Movement to even have a book in print in which these matters are seriously, yet thoroughly mentioned.

The most important thing in my review of the Free Kindle Book of the Day is to make such a review so that my forum, blog and e-mail readership can download the book while it is still free.
