COLUMBIA, SC -- A joint state and federal investigation into the activities of accused Charleston church shooter Dylann Roof has widened to include other persons of interest, according to multiple sources familiar with the ongoing investigation.

The expanded scope of the investigation now includes people with whom Roof associated in the weeks before the June 17 shootings of nine African-Americans at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, the sources said. Roof, 21, of Columbia, is white.

Although it appears Roof traveled alone to and from Charleston on the day of the killings, it is possible others had some knowledge of what he planned to carry out, said the sources, who are not being identified because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the investigation.

Investigators began to explore how much Roof’s associates knew, and when they knew it, after reviewing his cellphone and computer records, the sources said.

Prosecutors are still studying exactly what charges, if any, some of those associates might face, the sources said.

The New York Times Friday, citing sources with knowledge of the investigation, also said federal and state authorities have found Roof had been in contact with white supremacists online, though it does not appear they encouraged him to carry out the massacre.

The Times report did not identify who those people were.

Asked about the Roof case, U.S. Attorney Bill Nettles said Thursday, “As the Attorney General (Loretta Lynch) said, ‘We have opened a file on this and are continuing to investigate this tragedy.’” He declined to elaborate.

One possible charge could be misprision of a felony, which means a person had knowledge of a crime to be carried out and did not inform law enforcement. Other charges might be lying to a federal law enforcement officer.

Apart from announcing Roof’s arrest and making public the nine state murder charges and one weapons charge against him, state and federal officials have made public relatively little about the case.

Those other public notices and events have included a notice filed in federal court that the U.S. Attorney’s Office was officially involved in the case and naming the prosecutors. That notice also named two defense attorneys appointed to the case.

The U.S. Justice Department in Washington also announced it was looking at possible hate crime charges.

A bond hearing was held in Charleston June 19. At that time, a magistrate set Roof’s bond at $1 million on the weapons charge. A circuit judge must set bond on the murder charges for Roof, who is still being held in the county jail.

On the night of June 17, a white man entered a prayer meeting at Emanuel AME Church in downtown Charleston, prayed with a Bible study group, and then used a .45-caliber handgun to kill nine parishioners – six women and two men. Among the dead was Emanuel’s pastor, state Sen. Clementa Pinckney.

Roof was arrested a short time later and charged. Authorities say he confessed to the killings to law enforcement officials.

According to Roof’s Internet postings before the shooting, he wanted to start a race war between blacks and whites. Photos of Roof on his Internet site, the Last Rhodesian, show him with a Confederate flag, spitting on an American flag and holding a .45-caliber handgun.

In the days since the killings, there have been calls by many, including Gov. Nikki Haley, to remove the Confederate flag from the State House grounds.

Rallies on both sides of the flag issue have been held in recent days, and others are planned this weekend and Monday at the State House.

The S.C. House and Senate next week will consider passing a law to remove the flag. A recent survey of legislators showed there is enough support to do it, if all supporters cast a vote.

          .

WASHINGTON — Federal and local authorities have found that the man charged in the shooting deaths of nine black people in a South Carolina church last month had been in contact with white supremacists online, although it does not appear they encouraged him to carry out the massacre, according to law enforcement officials.

Investigators uncovered that information as they have pieced together where the gunman, Dylann Roof, 21, received his inspiration, and whether anyone else should face charges in connection with the murders.

“To understand what happened, you have to understand who he talked to and who may have known what,” said one law enforcement official briefed on the case. The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity because they did not want to be identified discussing a continuing investigation.

So far, the authorities have determined that people around Mr. Roof were aware that he held some racist beliefs.

If the authorities find that any of Mr. Roof’s associates knew about his plans, they would most likely try to prosecute them. In the case of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings, at least two men who were friends of the bombers were charged with helping them dispose of evidence from the bombing and from a subsequent shooting of a police officer. Three other men associated with the bombers were charged in connection with lying to the authorities or obstructing the investigation.

The authorities investigating the shooting that took place at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church have been able to piece together the communications of Mr. Roof in part because they are in possession of his electronic devices, including his cellphone and computer. The devices were taken to F.B.I. laboratories in Quantico, Va., where they have been scrutinized by specially trained agents and analysts.

They showed that at least some of Mr. Roof’s communications with the hate groups were online.

The authorities also have looked over a manifesto and photographs posted online of him at Confederate heritage sites and slavery museums. The F.B.I. has concluded that they were probably posted by Mr. Roof. Although some of the photos appear to have been taken by someone else, bureau analysts have said that they were likely selfie photos or taken by Mr. Roof using a timer on the camera.

The State newspaper in Columbia, S.C., reported on Thursday that the investigation had widened to include others who may have helped Mr. Roof. It did not identify who those people were.

The F.B.I. has dedicated significant resources to the inquiry and has worked closely with the local authorities. The Justice Department is likely to file federal hate crime charges against Mr. Roof, who already faces nine counts of murder in state court.

Senior officials at the Justice Department said that the shooting was such an extraordinary event that the department must bring hate crime charges to send a larger message about it.

          .

A version of this article appears in print on July 4, 2015, on page A11 of the New York edition with the headline: Hate Groups and Suspect in Contact, Officials Say.

            .

Milton Munster Don Black is shitting his pants over this picture of Dylann Storm Roof,
who might have actually read some of the stupid shit posted on $permFart, cum-cum, cum-cum. Send ZOGbux Now!!!

The federal investigation into last month’s shooting rampage in Charleston, S.C., has expanded to include groups that espouse white nationalist ideologies, according to a key figure in the movement.

Don Black, founder of the online forum Stormfront, said an FBI agent and a sheriff’s detective visited him at his West Palm Beach, Fla., home last week to question him about accused shooter Dylann Roof.

Black said in an interview that other white nationalist organizations also have been contacted by federal authorities.

“They definitely have been visited,” he said. “I can’t comment on whoever else has been. The FBI obviously has whatever Roof had computer-wise, so they’re getting their leads from there.”

Black said authorities’ questions led him to believe they thought Roof had visited and posted on the Stormfront website, but the extent of any involvement with the group is unclear.

“I’ve seen nothing that would indicate anything with him,” Black said. “The FBI seems to think there might be. But nobody on Stormfront has used that name, and there’s no indication.”

The authorities who visited him did not have a search warrant, Black said. He said the chances that he’ll be served a subpoena were “very possible” but later said he could not comment on whether that had happened.

FBI spokesman Paul Bresson said in an email Friday that he could not comment on the investigation.

The Kansas City Star wrote about Stormfront — the largest online white nationalist forum in the country — and other such sites in a series about domestic terrorism published earlier this year.

Black announced on Stormfront on July 4 that he was establishing a legal defense fund to help offset any expenses incurred should the group become further involved in the Charleston investigation. He told The Star he had raised more than $2,000 in the first few days. He said Stormfront — whose motto is “White Pride World Wide — has about 800 financial supporters and 40,000 daily visitors.

Roof, 21, is charged with killing nine people during a June 17 Bible study at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston.

Within days of the massacre, a manifesto surfaced online that appears to have been written by Roof. Stormfront was not mentioned in the document, but another group — the Council of Conservative Citizens, a St.-Louis based organization that promotes the preservation of the white race — was noted as one whose website the writer came across that ushered him into the white nationalist movement.

Officials with the council did not respond to requests for comment on the investigation. The group issued a statement after the shootings saying it “unequivocally condemns Roof’s murderous actions.” But its president, Earl Holt III, added that the organization was not responsible “for the actions of this deranged individual merely because he gleaned accurate information from our website.”

Another website, the Daily Stormer, drew attention last month when the Southern Poverty Law Center reported that Roof may have posted comments on the site under the name AryanBlood1488.

The site publisher, Andrew Anglin, responded on his website that “this isn’t particularly surprising, given that anyone reading about Black crime or other racial issues on the internet would necessarily have come across this site.”

Anglin condemned the shootings but blamed society.

“Instead of looking at the actions of one man who had a few screws loose, or the result of some kind of nonsensical White racist conspiracy against Black people, we need to look at the whole of a society which would produce this type of an individual,” he wrote on his site.

Other prominent white nationalist figures told The Star that they had not been contacted by authorities regarding the shootings. Among their groups: The Knights Party — formerly the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan — and the National Socialist Movement.

“We haven’t been contacted and would not expect to be,” said Rachel Pendergraft, national organizer of The Knights Party, adding that “a maniac like Roof is scarce.”

“But the attempt will be made to suggest that he is emblematic of virtually everyone right of center.”

Brian Culpepper, public relations director for the National Socialist Movement, called the investigation an “underhanded smear tactic.”

“It’s a witch hunt for anyone that’s pro-white and trying to stand up on behalf of the white race,” he said.

Legal experts say an investigation of white nationalist groups and online sites could raise constitutional issues.

If authorities simply ask an organization for all of Roof’s postings on its site and any communication users have had with him because it’s part of the evidence in their case against him, “then I think they could probably get it,” said Richard E. Levy, a constitutional law professor at the University of Kansas.

“That’s not targeting the site; it’s targeting a particular individual where you clearly have probable cause.”

But, Levy said, if a criminal investigation were to look for links between a shooter and another organization, there is a Fourth Amendment issue.

“Normally you need to have a warrant before you can conduct a search to get information from a private person, whether we’re talking about a website or other kinds of information. And to get the warrant, you would need to show some sort of probable cause to believe that there was evidence to support the connection.”

If probable cause is established, Levy said, First Amendment issues can come into play.

“Let’s say the only connection is that the shooter visited websites,” he said. “Then the argument from the government is, well, he was incited to take this action by the website. That’s a classic sort of First Amendment problem.”

Typically, in order to prosecute someone for incitement, a strict standard must be met, Levy said. It would require proof that the website published material that was intended and was likely to incite imminent, unlawful action.

“The fact that it might inadvertently do it is not enough,” Levy said. “Unless someone on the site came out and explicitly said, ‘Go shoot up a black church,’ it’s pretty difficult to meet this standard.”

Black, a former grand wizard of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, said he thinks the investigation could turn into a fishing expedition.

“The impression I have at this point is it could become overly broad rather than just investigating Dylann Roof,” he said. “Of course, they have a legitimate law enforcement interest in that. But the idea of looking into online associates, that could have a chilling effect on anyone that wants to post their opinion online, if they might accidentally become an associate of somebody like Dylann Roof.”

As federal authorities continue their investigation, most white nationalist groups have distanced themselves from Roof and issued statements condemning the shootings. Others, however, have done the opposite.

Alex Linder, founder of the Vanguard News Network, a racist online site in Kirksville, Mo., has posted comments about the shooting on his Web forum and talked about it on his radio show.

“We have the CCC (Council of Conservative Citizens) and people at these other sites … all apologizing or laying wreaths at this black church because, oh, the tragedy,” Linder said on his radio show July 1. “Who cares about them? There’s tragedy every day of the damned year.”

And Morris Gulett, head of the Aryan Nations in Converse, La., praised Roof in a post on his group’s website.

“I, for one, am very glad to see young people like Dylann Roof acting like men instead of the old 60’s era hippies stoned on weed and interracial love,” Gulett wrote.

                http://christian-identity.net/forum/...3406#post13406

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Joey Meek, a friend of admitted Charleston shooter Dylann Roof, on Friday pleaded not guilty to two charges related to the June massacre that left nine people dead at a historic black church.

Meek, 21, was charged by a federal grand jury with one count of making false statements to federal officials and one count of “misprision of a felony,” meaning he concealed knowledge about a crime. U.S. Magistrate Judge Shiva V. Hodges said during a hearing here that the only plea she could accept was one of not guilty; that plea was entered on Meek’s behalf.

Meek “is alleged to have taken steps to conceal his knowledge of the crimes committed by Dylann Storm Roof,” according to the Justice Department, “and to have made materially false statements when Meek told a special agent of the FBI that he did not know specifics of Roof’s plan to shoot individuals on a Wednesday, during Bible study, at an [Emanuel] AME Church in Charleston.”

Kim Konzny, Meek’s mother, burst into tears Friday at the sight of her son clad in an orange jumpsuit, shackled at the hands and feet. “We love you,” she whispered as her son rocked back and forth.

As Meek exited the courtroom, his father asked: “Do you need canteen money?”

Meek was arrested Thursday by FBI agents. He may be released on a $100,000 secured bond, though it is unclear whether his family will be able post the bond to secure his release. His attorney, Deborah Butcher, told the judge that Meek’s entire family is in the Columbia area and he is “not a flight risk.”

Butcher declined to comment outside the courthouse. Meek’s family also declined to comment before and after the hearing.

In the weeks before Roof allegedly gunned down nine worshipers inside the historic black church, he slept on the floor of a Lexington County, S.C., trailer that also housed Meek. Meek’s two brothers, mother, and girlfriend also live in the trailer; The Washington Post profiled the family on Sunday.

[These are the people Dylann Roof stayed with before the Charleston church shooting]

Meek told The Post that when news broke about the shooting, he feared Roof was the suspect; he said he called police once he saw surveillance footage of the suspected shooter on television the next morning. Meek said FBI agents subsequently questioned him about what Roof had told him before the church massacre, as well as his own possible involvement in the shooting.

His girlfriend, Lindsey Fry — who said she was also questioned — told The Post that Meek was taken into custody at work Thursday afternoon.

“He don’t think he did anything wrong,” Fry said in a phone interview. “I don’t really have anything to say about it.”

“I mean, we knew it was going to happen,” she said of the arrest, “but we don’t understand why it was happening.”

Fry declined to comment at the courthouse Friday.

Meek has said he and Roof were childhood friends and that Roof had asked him for a place to stay. In the days before the shooting, Meek said Roof told him he was going to “do something crazy,” so Meek and Fry hid Roof’s gun. They later returned it, believing the statement was nothing more than a drunken rant.

“I didn’t take him seriously,” Meek said.

[Night of S.C. killings started with prayers and a plot against humanity]

During the hearing Friday, Shiver read the indictment against Meek and had him sign a copy. On the first charge, misprision of a felony, Meek could face a maximum of three years in prison and a $250,000 fine. On the second, making a false statement to a federal agent, he could face a maximum five-year sentence with a $250,000 fine. Both charges also carry a year or more of supervised release.

The judge noted that Meek is currently on probation. His attorney, Butcher, outlined Meek’s life: He has a 10th-grade education, she said, went through ROTC and and lives with his mother.

On previous charges, Butcher said, Meek had “always shown up for court. He will be where he needs to be when required. He does not come from a family of means.”

A prosecutor said Meek “refused to appoint counsel” after receiving a letter in August from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, informing him that he was under investigation. The prosecutor also noted that Meek has a criminal record.

In December 2011, when Meek was just 17, he and an accomplice broke into a nearby home and stole electronics and jewelry, according to an arrest warrant. He was later caught when he tried to sell an iPod at a GameStop store and showed the clerk his ID. The burglary charge in that case was dropped as part of a plea deal after Meek pleaded guilty to playing a role in stealing a car a few months later, in January 2012, according to court papers.

He and a juvenile accomplice, according to an arrest warrant, drove to a Wal Mart and stole a 2009 Ford Flex from the parking lot. The pair was identified by surveillance footage.

At the hearing in federal court Friday, Butcher said Meek did send her a copy of the August letter from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, but that “he was unsure what the letter was. I was not sure what the letter was. He wasn’t trying evade law enforcement.

Addressing Meek, the judge obliquely referred to his prominence in the press, saying that if he divulged conversations between himself and his attorney, they would no longer be privileged and could be used against him. She also instructed him not to talk to any victims or witnesses in the Roof case.

“These charges against you are serious,” she said.

Meek wiped his eyes after he sat down. Looking at his family and girlfriend, he appeared to mouth, “I’m not going to get out,” before being led out of the courtroom.

Butcher may not stay on the case. Hodges, the judge, tentatively set another hearing for Wednesday to ensure Meek has appropriate representation. Meek has signed an affidavit affirming that he can not afford to hire a lawyer.

Roof faces nine counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder in the June 17 shooting spree. A South Carolina judge set a July 11, 2016, trial date for Roof.

CORRECTION: A previous version of this story incorrectly identified the mother of Joey Meek. The post has been updated. Bever and Izadi reported from Washington. Adam Goldman, Stephanie McCrummen, Sarah Larimer and Abby Phillip contributed to this story, which has been updated.

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- South Carolina has primary jurisdiction over the case of a man accused of fatally shooting nine black parishioners in Charleston last year and thus should be allowed to prosecute him before the federal government does, a state attorney argued Tuesday.

Roof, 22, is charged with nine counts of murder in the shooting deaths of parishioners during a Bible study at Emanuel AME Church in June 2015. Currently Roof's federal trial on hate crimes and other charges is set for November. The state case is not scheduled until January.

Scarlett Wilson, who will be prosecuting Roof for the state, is also slated to try former North Charleston police officer Michael Slager in the April 2015 shooting death of black motorist Walter Scott. That trial is set for Oct. 31 and will likely be underway at the time of Roof's federal trial. Slager is also charged in federal court, but the federal trial has not yet been scheduled.

Slager's attorney, Andy Savage, meanwhile, is also representing families of several of the church shooting victims.

In documents filed Tuesday, Wilson asked that the judges in the various cases consult on a trial schedule.

Both state and federal prosecutors are seeking the death penalty against Roof, but Wilson noted the federal government has not executed a prisoner in 13 years.

If Roof is sentenced to death in federal court first, "the state can have no confidence that the United States will ever seek to carry out a death sentence," she wrote.

Meanwhile, federal prosecutors have asked what mitigating factors the defense plans to present during the sentencing phase of Roof's trial. Mitigating circumstances such as drug abuse or mental illness are generally not required to be revealed until after a defendant is found guilty. The government wants the judge to order the defense to reveal such factors by Oct. 1.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Jay Richardson noted that a judge ordered the defense to provide mitigating factors before the trial of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who was sentenced to death in the April 15, 2013 Boston Marathon bombings that killed three and injured more than 260.

Dylann Roof, who faces murder charges in the killing of nine black parishioners at a Charleston, S.C., church, was attacked Thursday morning outside a detention center shower by a fellow inmate who bolted from an unlocked cell, according to Charleston County Sheriff Al Cannon Jr.

Roof, 22, was bruised in the face and back but not seriously injured, according to jail officials. No weapons were involved.

The sheriff told reporters that Roof and his attorney did not want to press charges against the attacker, identified as 25-year-old Dwayne Stafford.

Stafford, who is black, has been in the jail since January on charges of armed robbery and assault and battery, including attacking a police officer.

Cannon said there was no concrete indication that the attack was racially motivated "beyond the obvious speculation that we would all have given the nature of the situation."

Roof, before the June 17, 2015, shooting at Emanuel AME church, had written on social media that he hoped the killings would provoke a race war. He was photographed with a Confederate flags and expressed admiration for white supremacists and Nazism. He was arrested in North Carolina one day after the shootings.

Cannon blamed Thursday's incident on "complacency" by the two jail guards and said he did not believe there had been any coordination of events.

The sheriff said inmates are normally brought to the shower one at a time while other inmates remain locked in their cells. Stafford's cell, however, was not locked and he was able to run down a flight of stairs and attack Roof as he was about to step into the shower.

In addition, one of the guard's had taken a break moments before and the second guard was delivering toilet paper to another inmate.

Cannon said the second guard quickly responded, pulling Stafford off of Roof, who was in a "defensive crouch."

He said the procedures put in place to protect guards as well as inmates had not been followed.

"This serves as a wake up call for all concerned, " he said.

He also said it was not clear why Stafford's cell door was unlocked and that an investigation would look into whether there had been an electronic malfunction.

The Blacks are celebrating as a hero Dwayne Stafford, a dim-witted retard who attacked Dylan Roof in the shower after tricking him into thinking he was his friend.

Roof was arrested last year after strangling 9 Black people to death with a Confederate flag in a church. The world’s deadliest-ever mass strangling with a flag resulted in the government banning to flag to ensure nothing like this ever happens again.

The Jewish media blamed myself, Jared Taylor and the Council of Conservative Citizens for the event, though it was not ever clear why.

I’m not sure why Dylann Roof became friends with this Black guy in prison, or why he apologized to him for the shootings.

The Black guy seems too stupid to have made this up.
