The 3.8.x v-bulletin forums are at the end of their line

Last night this Christian Nationalist forum was down because of database errors because main ISP, Dreamhost, upgraded the PHP of all forums, blogs and web pages on those of its customers from PHP 5.3 and PHP 5.4. As a result until I was able to set the PHP version back to PHP 5.3, the forum was down last night and this morning.

Now I can buy another v-bulletin license for v-bulletin 5.2.x for $249 and get v-bulletin 4.x.x and v-bulletin 3.9.x which will work with PHP 5.6+. But I do not want to spend that much money, preferring to use a cheaper or free open-source bulletin board forum software like phpbb or simplemachines or MyBB.

So this forum shall migrate to another ISP which allows PHP 5.3 until such time as it becomes necessary to transfer from v-bulletin to other forum software.

If not, will vBulletin 3.8.8 work with PHP v.5.4 or 5.5?
My ISP is upgrading their version of PHP to either 5.4 or 5.5, so I need to prep updating vBulletin to work with this, thanks

I just did some searching here, and I have an owned license so 3.8.6 is the only version available to me?? If you can offer an upgrade path to 3.8.8 at a reasonable price I would do it. But I think it's kind of crummy that I would have to pay for an expensive version 4 license, just to be able to download 3.8.8 so it's stable. Really bad business practice, IMO especially to those who paid for an "owned" lifetime license. Again, really bad business practice that I can't contribute to. I would rather switch forum software than support that type of licensing, sorry. What a shame.

When you purchased vBulletin 3.8.X under your owned license it came with one year of updates. After that it would have been $60 for an additional year of updates. Over the last 4 years since we stopped selling vBulletin 3, you would have paid $240.00 for updates. The upgrade license is $209.00 and gives access to all versions of vBulletin.

That's absurd. I wouldn't have paid "$60 for an additional year of updates", because I there weren't any updates to even download at the time and/or I didn't need them. A $60 update to 3.8.8 isn't available now, otherwise I would do it. That's reasonable, and yet, not offered. Legitimate software companies will still allow users to download bug fixes, security patches, and updates to legacy software long after the software was originally purchased. (For example, when Apple recently issued a security patch needed for their five year old OS called "Snow Leopard", they don't tell users of Snow Leopard to pay another $XXX.XX just to get their legacy software patched and working correctly, they issue a free update.) Eventually companies will cease to offer updates entirely to legacy software. I get that. But this isn't the case with vBulletin. You actually have vBulletin update out there for version 3, and you will not allow legitimate users of an owned license to download it, or pay an additional $60 and $60 alone to obtain that update. You require them to form over $209.00, simply to get their old software patched and up to date. It's an offensive money grab, and I refuse to play. I would rather switch bulletin board software completely than to encourage that type of behavior, and it's clear by reading the forums here that I'm not alone in this.

Sorry Fluv, the old software was no longer supported and we had no choice but to change
    .

The v-bulletin software for v 3.8.x which is from 2009 when they went up to v-bulletin 4.0.x no longer will work if the mysql database generator is over v 5.3 -- which is now over two years End of Life. Version 5.4 and 5.5 is now End of Life. Pretty much all of your Servers are running mysql 5.6 and above.

The shitty server StumbleInn upgraded itzself. So rather than pay $249 for a new v-bulletin license for v 3.9.x which is what $permFart and Linder's Virtual Colostomy News Nutwerk forum run, it was decided to run using Greybeard's v 4.2.x license on Greybeard's server. And that is why thangs are the way they are.

Looks a lot like StumbleInn Classic. Be gratefool you got it good enough thanks to Greybeard. Right now my forum is running on v-bulletin v 4.2.x on mysql 5.6 and the whitenationalist.org forum is down altogether since January 2016.

Upgrading this Christian Nationalist Forum Beyond v-bulletin

Upgrading this Christian Nationalist Forum Beyond v-bulletin

      http://whitenationalist.org/forum/sh...660#post146660
      http://christian-identity.net/forum/...660#post146460

This Christian Nationalist Forum was down for three days from June 1 to June 4th precisely because the v-bulletin 3.8.2 license bought for $180 in April 2009 and upgraded to v-bulletin 3.8.7 for $30 in June 2010 is unable to work given that modern servers no longer support PHP 5.3 nd have upgraded to a minimum of PHP 5.5, moving to PHP 5.6 and 7.0. The end result is that this forum now must use v-bulletin 4.2.x which is uglier and not as visually appealing as v-bulletin 3.8.x, which has been the forum software of choice during the "Golden Age of Movement Bulletin Boards" from 2003-2010.

Now $permFart and Rabbi Linder's Virtual Colostomy Bag use v-bulletin v3.9.x at least for now. StumbleInn has to migrate to a new server and use the v-bulletin 4.2.x license of one of their users.

So, it is very unlikely that my Church shall use its funds to buy a new v-bulletin license for $249 to purchase a v-bulletin v5.2.x license to download a 3.9.x forum which will only work for a few years or a v-4.3.x license which is ugly and also outdated. Right now the plan is to purchase a Xenforo license for $140 to upgrade to as necessary given that Xenforo is supported and upgradable, far more than v-bulletin. V-Bulletin could make an upgrade for v.3.1x.x to work with the upgraded PHP5.6 to 7.0 database generator, but they refuse to do so. There are enough issues involving loss of freedumb of speech given Bryan Reo & Rabbi Baal Finck abusing the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and abusing legal process in the Lake County Ohio korts that there is no real reason to mess with outdated software unable to work with updated secure database protocols.
