Some of my Facebook friends pointed out this YouTube video of last week's East Newton Board of Education candidate forum. Those who are interested in East Newton education issues can watch the whole thing. Those who want to hear a board candidate go off the rails and go on a rant about a former teacher in the Joplin R-8 School District (me) can find that at the 16-minute mark.

For those who are not familiar with Martin Lindstedt, he has been responsible for many of the comments against me on this blog over the years. In those comments, he makes just as much sense as he does in this video.

Default East Newton seeks $4 million bond issue

East Newton seeks $4 million bond issue

Revenue would finance security upgrades, building improvements

NEOSHO, Mo. — Newton County voters on Tuesday will cast ballots in a multitude of races and issues in the annual town and school elections.

    EAST NEWTON

East Newton School District voters will be asked to approve a $4 million bond issue to complete security upgrades and building projects at all three campuses.

If the bond issue passes, the funds would be used in several areas, including:

    • Installing safety and security upgrades such as cameras at the Granby and Triway campuses, and access control systems at the Granby Campus and at East Newton High School.

    • Repairing roofs and replacing windows at all three campuses.

    • Constructing covered walkways at the Granby and Triway campuses.

    • Making improvements to the bus barn at the high school.

    • Adding a lab for the high school agriculture department in which to keep animals.
The proposal would extend the district’s debt service levy at the current rate of $0.4691 per $100 of assessed valuation by 20 years. The district would be able to make prepayments to pay the bond issue off faster if the opportunity is available, Superintendent Todd McCrackin has said previously.

The total levy for the district is just under $3.22 per $100 of assessed valuation, which means the owner of a $100,000 home pays about $612 in school taxes annually.

McCrackin said he was hopeful the district could start work on the projects soon after students leave school for the summer, and the plan is to have everything finished before students come back to class in August. He said the projects would make the district’s campuses more secure, as well as allow some flexibility with the district’s operating budget and extend the longevity of its buildings.

“When you’re talking about windows and roofs and things like that, it maintains a better environment for our students, and you’re also talking about energy efficiency,” and improving that efficiency can save the district money, McCrackin said.

The measure requires a four-sevenths, or 57.14 percent, majority for approval.

Also in the East Newton School District, seven people are running for two three-year terms on the school board: James R. Allman, Judy Harper, Kimberly Ann Branham, Joey Adams, Jeff Goodall, Martin Lindstedt and Julie McGill.

In the East Newton Area Fire Protection District, Zachary Testerman and Steve Burnett are running for a six-year term on the board.

    GRANBY

In Granby, incumbent Bill Cooper, Pat Kelly and Martin Lindstedt are running for a two-year term as a South Ward councilman.

    SENECA

Four people are running for two spots on the Seneca School District Board of Education.

They are incumbent Suzanne Brown, Gale Lavern Webb, Sonya N. Bruegel and Preston Lewis Olson.

In the race for a 2nd Ward seat on the Seneca City Council, both Robin Orcutt and Nick Whitehead are listed on the ballot. Orcutt, however, has since moved out of the ward and is not eligible to run.

    OTHER TOWNS

IN LOMA LINDA, five people — Gene Delano, Thomas Parr, John Fernandez, John Berrey and Paul Magnin — are running for three positions on the Board of Trustees.

IN REDINGS MILL, Sharon Dale, Bill Clanton and Rance Junge are running for two spots on the Board of Trustees.

IN STELLA, five people are running for two two-year terms on the Board of Trustees. They are William “Bill” Lynn, Jennie B. Lynn, Peggy (Littlefield) Clarkson, Kelly Carter Cox and Rick Eaggleston.
