Default Suspect in killings of three Baton Rouge officers identified as Kansas City man who was former Marine, ‘life coach’

Suspect in killings of three Baton Rouge officers identified as Kansas City man who was former Marine, ‘life coach’

The gunman suspected of killing three Baton Rouge law enforcement officers Sunday morning and wounding three other others has been identified as Gavin Eugene Long of Kansas City.

Police said Long apparently died in a shootout with police on his 29th birthday.

A Star reporter on Sunday afternoon knocked on the door of a Kansas City home once listed as a residence for Gavin Long. The reporter was met at the door by a man with a gun who declined to comment.

Long served a year in Iraq with the Marines, according to the New York Times. After joining in 2005, he was made a sergeant in 2008. CBS News reported that Long left the service with an honorable discharge in 2010.

A Gavin Long graduated in 2005 from Grandview High School, according to The Star’s library. A Gavin Eugene Long of Kansas City was on the dean’s list of the University of Alabama in 2012, according to the university’s website.

According to archives, The Star published a marriage announcement for Aireyona Osha Hill and Gavin Eugene Long on July 22, 2009.

Court records show that Long filed for divorce from his wife in 2011. Records suggest the couple did not have children.

Court records also show that a petition was filed against Long on March 17 for delinquent city earnings tax. The summons was served to his mother on June 1, documents show, and the case was dismissed on June 7.

Though some media outlets said Long was possibly connected to the anti-government sovereign citizen movement, those who monitor extremist groups said they hadn’t come across any evidence to confirm those reports.

No one was at the home where his ex-wife last lived. Neighbors said the couple had moved out some time ago but occasionally visited the three-story brown-colored house.

While Long appeared to have little presence on social media using his birth name, he left an online trail linking to various social media accounts and websites that reference the online identity “Cosmo Setepenra.” The domain for these accounts and websites are registered under the name Gavin Long and list a Kansas City address.

A phone number listed for the domain convoswithcosmo.club was also used in websites where Long apparently used the identity of Cosmo Setepenra. No person with the name Cosmo Setepenra appeared to be otherwise listed in Kansas City or elsewhere.

As Cosmos, a self-proclaimed “freedom strategist, mental game coach, nutritionist, author and spiritual advisor,” Long shared his perspective frequently on platforms such as Instagram, Twitter, YouTube and a personal website that touted the “Convos with Cosmo.”

On his website, “Convos with Cosmos,” he wrote blog posts about sex, health and entertainment and appeared to sell holistic health coaching sessions. In recent weeks, he had shared commentary about high-profile officer involved shootings, including Alton Sterling, who was shot by police outside a Baton Rouge gas station earlier this month.

The website says that at age 16, after “self-educating” himself about fitness and nutrition, he lost more than 80 pounds in six months. He joined the Marines, the site says, “and earned the rank of Sergeant (E-5) in less than three years as one of the Corps most physically fit and disciplined Marines.”

While in the Marines, the site says, he spent two years in Japan and completed one tour in Iraq. When stationed in San Diego, it says, he “became a highly esteemed and sought after nutritionist and personal trainer.”

The website says he received an associate degree in general studies from Central Texas College, then attended Clark Atlanta University, where he was on the dean’s list. After a year-and-a-half at Clark, it says, he had a “spiritual revelation,” dropped out of college, sold his two cars, gave away his belongings and went to Africa on a spiritual journey. While there, the site says, he published three books he calls The Cosmo Way series.

He told a YouTube audience that he traveled to Dallas before the police shooting and was in the city during a sniper attack that killed five officers.

He opined on how history shows how “100 percent of revolutions, of victims fighting their oppression, from victims fighting their bullies, 100 percent have been successful through fighting back, through bloodshed. Zero have been successful just over simply protesting. It doesn’t. … It has never worked and it never will. You got to fight back.”

He encouraged “real” and “alpha” individuals who wanted change to take a different tactic in invoking change.

“It’s only fighting back or money,” Long said. “That’s all they care about. Revenue and blood. Revenue and blood. Revenue and blood.”

On July 12, Long as “Cosmos” posted a YouTube video of him approaching a group of men in Houston. He tells them about losing 80 pounds at 16, joining the Marines. He speaks of being on the dean’s list at Clark Atlanta before having a “spiritual revelation.”

He tells the group he used to “party with celebrities” and sleep with woman. After his revelation he said he sold all his material possessions and went to Africa, where he fasted, refrained from sex and “wrote three books.” Those books, variations of “The Cosmos Way,” are displayed on his website.

Recent tweets seemed to reference his desire to see a more powerful, unified force combat white power and “elevate” black people.

“Power doesn’t respect weakness. Power only respects Power. # Alton # Castile,” he tweeted on July 7.

“Violence is not THE answer (its a answer), but at what point do you stand up so that your people dont become the Native Americans...EXTINCT?” and “Just bc you wake up every morning doesn't mean that you're living. And just bc you shed your physical body doesn't mean that you're dead.”

In a YouTube video posted on July 8, Long called the sniper shooting in Dallas “justice” and informed his audiences that the “sacrifices I make and the sacrifices I will make” are dedicated to black women and youth. He referenced the movie “Deacons for Defense,” a film based on the true story about an armed self-defense group of African-Americans that protected civil rights organizations in the U.S. during the 1960s.

“Most of the times when you want peace you gotta go to war,” he said then.

In a follow up video he warned his audience about affiliating him with various groups, including ISIS, the black business school and the Nation of Islam, of which he said he was once a member, if “anything happen with me.”

“I’m affiliated with the spirit of justice nothing else, nothing more, nothing less.”

Authorities initially believed that two other assailants might be at large, but hours later said the dead gunman was the only person who fired at the officers.

The local FBI office is leading the Kansas City portion of the investigation stemming from the shooting earlier Sunday. However, details of their investigation were not released, said Bridget Patton, spokeswoman for the FBI in Kansas City.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Two Kansas sheriff's deputies who were shot and killed by an inmate while transporting him between the courthouse and jail were both parents, authorities said Saturday.

The inmate, whose name hasn't been released, shot Wyandotte County Sheriff's deputies Theresa King and Patrick Rohrer on Friday in a gated area behind the county courthouse. He may have used one of the deputies' own guns to shoot them during a struggle after he got out of the van, authorities said.

The inmate was also shot and underwent surgery Friday. Terry Zeigler, the police chief of Kansas City, Kansas, said at a news conference Saturday that as far as he knew, the man was in stable condition.

Baltimore -- (WNN)A retired Baltimore police sergeant was indicted for allegedly planting a pellet gun on a suspect after another officer intentionally ran him over, prosecutors said.

Former Baltimore Police Department Sgt. Keith Gladstone pleaded not guilty to federal civil rights and witness tampering charges on Tuesday in connection with a 2014 incident that involved members of a corrupt police task, according to an indictment.

Acting Baltimore Police Commissioner Michael Harrison suspended three unnamed officers in the wake of the indictment and said they would be investigated by the department's Internal Affairs unit.

"Based on today’s indictment and other information provided to me, I am suspending three current Baltimore Police officers pending the outcome of an Internal Affairs investigation," Harrison said in a statement. "A fourth officer listed in today’s indictment had already been suspended and will also be investigated by our Internal Affairs section.”

Gladstone, 51, allegedly delivered a fake gun to a crime scene on March 26, 2014, when Sgt. Wayne Jenkins, the leader of the department’s now-defunct Gun Trace Task Force, called him "in a panic" after running a man over with his vehicle, according to the indictment, which prosecutors unsealed Tuesday.

"W.J. was in a panic because he had just deliberately run over an arrestee, D.S. [Demetric Simon], in the front yard of a home in Northeast Baltimore," prosecutors said in a statement.

Gladstone allegedly drove over to the scene, retrieved a BB gun from the trunk of his police vehicle and dropped it near a pickup truck where Simon was lying, prosecutors said.

Other officers said they overheard Gladstone tell Jenkins, in the presence of another officer, to have someone search the pickup truck before he left the scene with a partner, according to the statement. He allegedly told the partner that he should say they were there for "scene security" if they were ever questioned by federal investigators.

"Based on a false statement of probable cause written by W.J. in another officer’s name, D.S. was subsequently charged with possession, use, and discharge of a gas or pellet gun, for the BB gun that Gladstone planted at the scene of D.S.’s arrest, and a number of drug offenses," the statement said.

Jenkins was sentenced to 25 years in prison for multiple crimes, including drug dealing and robbery, as head of the department's elite Gun Trace Task Force, a nine-member squad that allegedly spent years robbing citizens, extorting drug dealers and filing false reports, according to the U.S. attorney's office.

Harrison said the allegations against Gladstone spoke to the toxic culture of the city's police department.

"The allegations outlined today in court are beyond disturbing, and speak to a culture that I am here to change," Harrison said.

Gladstone retired from the department in 2012, returned a year later and retired again in 2017. If convicted, Gladstone faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, prosecutors said.
