The McNasty McEvil McWorthless McBastard McCain is finally dead. Good.
    .

President Donald Trump on Saturday expressed his condolences to the family of Sen. John McCain, who died Saturday after a battle with an aggressive form of brain cancer.
    .

The God-Emperor takes the better part of valor & decides to be nice to the family of the evil bastard.
    .

The two men, while both Republicans, were political foes. McCain was a leading member of the so-called Never Trumpers, conservatives who refused to get onboard the Trump train.

According to reports, the president was disinvited to McCain’s funeral.

Trump made his disdain for McCain clear in the summer of 2015 ― shortly after announcing his presidential run ― by throwing out a belittling comment about the Arizona senator’s military record. He told a crowd gathered at an Iowa political forum that McCain was “not a war hero.”

The future president suggested that others considered McCain a hero “because he was captured.” But Trump said, “I like people who weren’t captured.”

Trump avoided service in the military. McCain, a Navy pilot during the Vietnam War, was shot down and held prisoner for more than five years. He was repeatedly tortured, but he declined a North Vietnamese offer to release him before others who had been captured earlier. Despite fielding criticism from a vast array of public officials, Trump refused to apologize and reportedly has no regrets.

Days before Trump’s slighting remarks, McCain had said the candidate “fired up the crazies” at the fringes of the GOP with his incendiary comments about Mexican immigrants in McCain’s home state of Arizona.

Over the next few years, the two men continued to clash.

On several occasions last summer, the president taunted and mocked McCain at rallies where Trump’s supporters chanted in response, “Drain the swamp!” McCain set off that criticism when, just days after receiving his devastating medical diagnosis, he voted against a Republican health care bill to repeal and replace Obamacare with a dramatic thumbs-down gesture.

Trump seemed unable to let that July 2017 vote go. Months afterward he bashed the senator on Twitter over the failed bill, claiming McCain “let Arizona down!” Nearly a year later, at a Tennessee political rally, the president brought it up again.

Then there was the time Congress passed a bill with McCain’s name on it.

In August 2018, Trump signed the $717 billion defense measure, officially titled the John S. McCain National Defense Authorization Act, but neglected to mention the senator at all at the signing ceremony, instead boasting about a new military branch he wanted to create dubbed the Space Force. (Former Secretary of State John Kerry, another Vietnam War vet, called the scene “disgraceful.”) Trump did reference McCain later that day ― but only to insult him.

In private, the president’s ridicule would reportedly get physical, mocking McCain (and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell) with gestures and posturing. Once, during a meeting, White House aide Kelly Sadler reportedly dismissed McCain’s views with a cruel remark: “He’s dying anyway.”

McCain’s rebuttals were generally measured, in contrast to the president’s brash rhetorical style.

When Trump threatened North Korea on Twitter, McCain critiqued the move by saying, “I don’t think that’s a way you attack an issue and a challenge like this.” Of Trump’s performance at the NATO summit in 2018, McCain said it was “disappointing, yet ultimately unsurprising.” After Trump congratulated Russian President Vladimir Putin on his election victory, McCain noted, “An American president does not lead the free world by congratulating dictators on winning sham elections.”

McCain described Trump’s July 2018 summit with Putin ― where Trump once again refused to fully accept U.S. intelligence agencies’ assessment of Russian interference in the 2016 election ― as “one of the most disgraceful performances by an American president in memory.”

Whether Trump will back off the McCain jabs now that the senator has died remains to be seen.

Meghan McCain, the senator’s talk show host daughter, indicated earlier this year that the White House has offered her family private apologies for some of the president’s remarks in the past. But she added that Trump’s attacks are something she’s “never going to forgive.”

Whatabout -- a word not loved by you Crooked Hillaryistas -- wanting to keep the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars going for the next hundred years or more? Now the Shia Iraqis once they got democracy voted for us to leave in 2011 and we left. But we are waiting for our next Saigon moment for the near future in Kabul. Now that the feckless Songbird chickenhawk is dead, howabout a change in policy for actual peace?

How about the God-Emperor Trump, in order to "honor" the Songbird McCain, North Vietnam Ace who destroyed five US warplanes & nearly sunk an aircraft carrier, [Annapolis nickname: McNasty] by announcing a complete and immediate withdrawal from the 17 year & failing imperial skirmish in the Graveyard of Mighty Evil Empires?

The Taliban insists that we convert to Islam in return for accepting our surrender, but if we just tuck-tail-& run off then what can they do about it?

        Half-staff 4 Songbird McNasty

        .

Trump speaks about McCain after ignoring questions all day, returns White House flag to half-staff originally appeared on abcnews.go.com

After ignoring repeated questions all day about whether he would say anything about his political nemesis, John McCain, President Donald Trump finally spoke about him Monday evening, saying "our hearts and prayers are going to the family of Senator John McCain ... and we very much appreciate everything Sen. McCain has done for our country."

The president was speaking to a dinner with evangelical leaders. He extended prayers and condolences to the victims of the Jacksonville, Florida shooting as well.

The president's comments came a few hours after the White House abruptly returned its flag to half-staff Monday afternoon in honor of the late senator. Trump had ignored questions about McCain in the Oval Office Monday morning and at other events as well.

(MORE: Unlike White House, some governors order flags at half-staff until McCain's burial)

The president issued a statement Monday afternoon explaining why the flag was again lowered -- after facing widespread criticism for not keeping it at half-staff.

Despite our differences on policy and politics, I respect Senator John McCain’s service to our country and, in his honor, have signed a proclamation to fly the flag of the United States at half-staff until the day of his interment," the president said.

"I have asked Vice President Mike Pence to offer an address at the ceremony honoring Senator McCain at the United States Capitol this Friday," the statement continued.

"At the request of the McCain family, I have also authorized military transportation of Senator McCain’s remains from Arizona to Washington, D.C., military pallbearers and band support, and a horse and caisson transport during the service at the United States Naval Academy. Finally, I have asked General John Kelly, Secretary James Mattis, and Ambassador John Bolton to represent my Administration at his services," the president said.

But throughout much of the day, Trump had ignored almost a dozen questions from ABC News chief White House correspondent Jonathan Karl and reporters on McCain.

In contrast, the president's daughter Ivanka Trump praised McCain as a "hero" at a women's empowerment event in Washington, D.C.

“As we gather here today I want to extend my deepest sympathies to the family of Sen John McCain –an American patriot who served our country with distinction for more than six decades," said Trump. "The nation is united in its grief and the world mourns the loss of a true hero and a great statesman."

White House officials had returned the U.S. flag to full-staff around midnight, ABC News senior White House correspondent Cecilia Vega told “Good Morning America” host George Stephanopoulos Monday.

The White House flag could then be seen for some time flying at full-staff while the banners surrounding the Washington Monument were at half-staff.

        .

The initial White House flag-lowering that lasted less than 48 hours broke with precedent that it remain lowered until burial.

The federal code states that the flag shall be lowered on the day of death and the following day for a sitting member of Congress. Flying it at half-staff for an extended period of time is at the discretion of the president.

Meanwhile, Trump inititialy rejected his aides’ recommendation to issue a statement praising the late Arizona senator, The Washington Post reported Sunday.

But Trump did release a tweet of condolences.

        .

The McCain family had reportedly asked the president not to attend McCain’s funeral even before he died this weekend at age 81.

Two former presidents -- Barack Obama and George W. Bush -- will deliver eulogies Saturday. Vice President Mike Pence has also been invited to the funeral.

)))WNN((( As Donald Trump continues to attack John McCain, the late senator’s youngest daughter made a rare public statement upbraiding the president.

“Everyone doesn’t have to agree with my dad or like him, but I do ask you to be decent and respectful,” 27-year-old Bridget McCain wrote on Twitter Wednesday. “If you can’t do those two things, be mindful. We only said goodbye to him almost 7 months ago.”

Her tweet came after Trump aired a list of long-held grievances against the Arizona Republican during a speech at a tank factory in Ohio.

Among them: The president complained that he wasn’t thanked for giving McCain “the kind of funeral he wanted.”

“I gave him the kind of funeral he wanted, which as president I had to approve,” Trump said.

McCain had two services, one at the National Cathedral and one at a church in his home state, to which Trump was not invited. Neither would have required approval from the White House. Trump may have been referring to McCain’s interment on the grounds of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis.

“I don’t care about this. I didn’t get ‘thank you.’ That’s OK,” Trump continued.

The audience, which had applauded and cheered through much of the speech, sat virtually silent during the attack on the late senator and decorated war hero.

Bridget McCain scolded Trump in a follow-up tweet.

“Even if you were invited to my dad’s funeral, you would have only wanted to be there for the credit and not for any condolences,” she wrote. “Unfortunately, you could not be counted on to be courteous, as you are a child in the most important role the world knows.”

Meghan McCain, the late senator’s most visible daughter, read her sister’s tweets aloud on ABC’s “The View” on Thursday.

“I think it’s very brave of her,” Meghan McCain said of Bridget. “She’s very young and she does not speak publicly.”

As she did on Wednesday, Meghan McCain said she did not want people to feel sorry for her family.

“I don’t expect decency and compassion from the Trump family,” she said. “I do want to thank the American public for all the decency and compassion that they have given us.”

Meghan McCain said Trump’s attacks on her father were reminiscent of his verbal assault on Khizr and Ghazala Khan, the Gold Star family who appeared on stage during the 2016 Democratic National Convention.

She called on viewers to donate to a veterans’ charity.

“Can we take this awful moment and turn it into something positive?” Meghan McCain said.

                .
