The first of two planned public meetings with landowners whose property may be affected by the Joplin Reservoir project was held Tuesday night on the campus of Missouri Southern State University in Joplin.

Missouri American Water hosted the informational meeting.

Tuesday night’s meeting was for those who live west of I-49 on what Missouri American is calling Site B.

A meeting for landowners who live on Site A, east of I-49 in the Diamond area is scheduled for January 8.

Those who attended had the opportunity to ask questions but no new information was provided.

Missouri American Water now plans to select a final site by early February 2019 but Christie Barnhart, spokesman for the company, stated that the project remains years from completion. She estimated that completion could take 5 to 6 years. She also stated that the company would prefer to negotiate with landowners but that eminent domain remains an option, if necessary.

The Joplin Reservoir project is a proposed solution to possible water issues for the City of Joplin. Data from a drought in 1954 was used to demonstrate that Shoal Creek wouldn’t be sufficient the city’s water needs in the event of a similar drought. Joplin’s growth in recent years has also contributed to the growing water demand.

As the project continues to develop, The Neosho Daily News will continue to bring updates and information.
