Why It's Important for Communities to Confront Nazis

Why It's Important for Communities to Confront Nazis

    .

    .

It turns out that North Dakotans are more than happy to let neo-Nazis know they are not welcome to come in and take over their small towns.
Hundreds of protesters gathered in a North Dakota town on Sunday to speak out against plans by an American Nazi group to buy up property and take over the local government in an effort to build a bastion against diversity.

About 300 protesters, including some 200 Native Americans from nearby reservations, gathered outside the Leith City Hall where Jeff Schoep, leader of the National Socialist Movement presented his plans for turning the tiny North Dakota town – population 24 – into a segregated place where whites can live among themselves.
    .

Native Americans in particular took an active role in organizing the protests:
    .
Various protest speakers took the mike and denounced the neo-Nazis peacefully, but emphatically. “We want the Nazis to know this is not a one day protest. We’ll be watching everything you do.” The protestors chanted, “No Nazis, no KKK!” A World War II Veteran said, “Let these creepy Nazi-Ku Klux people get out.” “Hey, hey! Ho ho! These Nazis have got to go!” the protesters chanted. “Our grandmothers will stand up to you! Our women will take you on!” one speaker said. “This is not your land. This is my land and you can go back home.” “On behalf of everybody here I’d like to say, go home.” “Go home, go home!” the crowd chanted.
    .

Somewhat predictably, all this gets a mixed review from the hand-wringing conservatives at one of the leading North Dakota political blogs:

    .
I admire what the folks at UnityND have done in organizing a social media and in-person response to the nazis, but in a way I think they’re helping those they oppose more than they like to realize.

I can’t help but feel as though the best response to the nazi “town hall” would have been no response at all.

It has to be cathartic to show up and scream at nazis. To call them names, mock their movement and denounce their bigoted ideology. I’ll bet that feels good, particularly for the large Native American contingent on hand who know a thing or two about racism, but what does it accomplish? Very little, as the right of these nazis to organize, hold meetings and purchase property is as sacrosanct as it is for any of the rest of us. Protesting isn’t going to stop them.

In fact, protesting gives them the one thing they need desperately from outside of their movement, and that’s attention.

These creeps live on the margins. Their ideas find few adherents. They have very little political and social clout. Except when they are given attention from outside of their movement.

They accomplish this by causing a stir. By doing and saying controversial things that fire up the public, and draw media attention.
    .

Once upon a time -- when I was confronted with the decision on whether or not to devote news coverage to the activities of the neo-Nazi enclave known as the Aryan Nations -- I actually agreed with this.

And then I learned that following this advice -- ignoring the Nazis in the hope they will go away -- was a huge mistake. I have never forgotten it.

    .
This was a debate with which I have become all too familiar over the years. I first dealt with it in the late 1970s, when I was the editor (something of a punk, at age 21) of the little daily in Sandpoint, Idaho, some 25 miles north of the new arrivals at Hayden Lake who called themselves the Aryan Nations.

I described some of my early encounters with the dilemma in Chapter 3 of In God's Country:

    .

The letters all arrived the same way: neat, clean, carefully typed in all capitals. It was the neatness -- and the capitals -- that made them distinctive from many of the letters to the editor that crossed my desk at the Sandpoint Daily Bee. But after awhile, it was easy to recognize the correspondence from Robert Mathews.

The Bee was really a small-town paper; we only published five days a week and the paper itself was sometimes only ten or twelve pages thick. We didn't get all that many letters to the editor, so we treasured the few we got. You wrote a letter to us, it was probably going to get published.

Robert Mathews, though, was a little different story.

Mathews sent us letters regularly, one about every three or four weeks, from his home in Metaline Falls. This was actually out of the Bee's circulation area, and we knew he sent the same letters to our sister paper, the weekly Priest River Times, and its cross-river competitor, the Newport Miner. Since we preferred to publish letters from people who lived among our subscribers, we had an easy excuse not to run them.

There were better reasons, though. Almost inevitably, Mathews' missives were filled with anti-Semitic rants about the "Zionist Occupation Government" and the international banking conspiracy, at other times attacking "shiftless blacks" whose welfare burden was killing the nation with taxes. Yes, we welcomed an open debate on the pages of the Bee; but we felt like we had to draw a line when it came to spreading hate and falsehoods.

Most of Mathews' letters went directly to the "round file." Because he wrote so regularly, though, I looked for opportunities to reward his doggedness, deciding I would run the letters if they appeared free of racist or anti-Semitic references. This, however, never did occur.

Robert Mathews' letters were part of a disturbing tide of racial hate, and bizarre radical-right belief systems, that we had observed rising in the Northwest in the 1970s. The phenomenon was a puzzling one, especially for those of us in the newspaper business, because we were uncertain how to respond to it. Were we simply observing a few loud-mouthed ranters wishing to attract attention to themselves? And would covering them or allowing their hate to spew on our pages just give them the publicity, and the foothold, they sought? Would reporting on them just encourage them?
    .

This was not the only context in which we discussed the Aryan Nations in our newsroom. We also discussed -- with the publisher/owner, Pete Thompson, in the mix -- whether or not we should even cover the activities at the compound, as well as some of the hateful material its followers trafficked in beyond even letters to the editor. And we decided not to. With our resources limited in the first place, it seemed as though giving their fringe fantasies about creating a "white Northwest" was not just a waste of space, but something that might actually help distribute those views and, worse yet, recruit fresh followers.

The moral of this story, of course, is that Robert Mathews was not just a typical writer of letters to the editor. Some four years later, he would organize a group of extremist revolutionaries who called themselves the Bruders Schweigen (Silent Brotherhood), more popularly known as The Order. By the time their yearlong crime spree was done, they ended up with an astonishing record of havoc in their wake: some twenty-odd bank robberies and armored-car stickups, including the largest take in an overland-carrier holdup in history ($3.6 million from a Wells Fargo armored car in Ukiah, Calif.); operating a large counterfeiting ring; and most notoriously, the assassination of Denver radio talk-show host Alan Berg.

As I noted in the book, the Daily Bee changed its policies by the time it was all over. In his last week alive, Mathews penned a long letter and sent it to a few newspapers, including the little paper in Sandpoint. A few days later, he was cornered by the FBI on Whidbey Island and went out in a blaze of glory, remaining inside his cabin after an incendiary device was lobbed into it. The Bee finally ran that letter.

What that incident, and many subsequent cases, convinced me of was this: We can never let our guard down when it comes to fascists and fascism -- especially when it is the real thing. We dismiss them as inconsequential at our extreme peril.

    .

It's not that the counterpoint is meritless:
    .
There is, in fact, a real danger that giving liars like the Holocaust deniers and the neo-Nazis any kind of publicity at all will help them spread their poison and gain new followers. In fact, it's almost certain that this will happen to at least a minor extent. However, that problem is far outweighed by the extent to which the larger society can see this kind of activity for what it is. In this sense, the kind of reporting that's done is essential; if it's shallow reporting that resorts to a phony "balancing" act, then the more likely the extremists are to succeed; the more grounded and in-depth it is, the more likely you are to blunt any potential recruitment effect.

Worse, trying to create an information vacuum only leaves society even more vulnerable. Pretending they don't exist, for one thing, plays into extremists' own mythology, particularly the belief that the "mainstream media" don't "dare" to run their conspiracy theories because it's the "truth". It also means that the widespread opprobrium they should be hearing is absent. Haters love to believe they're carrying out what the rest of society really, secretly, wants, but no one dares say so because of "political correctness."
    .

Haters and racists thrive in darkness, and they thrive on silence. They look for approval from whatever source they can muster. For them, silence equals tacit approval.

But paying attention to haters and, moreover, standing up to them requires both constant vigilance and a keen awareness of the dangers inherent in doing so. In my experience, the best response it to make a complete mockery of them, as a crowd of counter-protesters did several years ago in Olympia. (Talk about a bunch of guys going home with their heads down and their tails between their legs.)

The important thing, though, is for these communities to be able to stand up and say "Not In Our Town". And this time it was successful.

Craig Paul Cobb purchased the white, two-story home Sept. 16, 2011.
      (TJ Jerke/Forum News Service)

      .

LEITH, N.D. -- The Leith home of white supremacist Craig Cobb could be condemned because it is not connected to water and sewer lines.

Cobb, 61, has purchased 12 lots in the tiny town about 75 miles southwest of Bismarck as part of his plan to turn the town into a haven for white supremacists. Cobb is living in one of three structures he bought.

Cobb’s property is among several targeted with a nuisance complaint issued by the Leith city commission in early August.

Custer Health Environmental Services in Mandan, which provides safety and sanitation inspections for five counties, including Grant County, issued 12 citations to 10 individuals last week, saying their properties are a public health nuisance.

Three complaints were given to Cobb.

The town is now waiting for property owners to address the nuisance complaints within their 30-day deadline.

Cobb said Sunday he does not plan on complying with the request.

Aaron Johnson, the environmental health practitioner that oversees nuisance complaints and the on-site septic system license, permit and inspection program for the health unit, said Cobb had five days from the day he received the notice to provide details of how he will comply with state law.

The deadline has since passed and Cobb has not provided any plans.

Cobb, who faces opposition from town residents that want him to move out of town, claims the city is targeting him with the requirements.

Leith Mayor Ryan Schock said he doesn’t think so.

“(Cobb) was just at the wrong place at the wrong time,” Schock said.

Johnson said if Cobb doesn’t have a plan for his water and sewer, Custer Health will have to declare the property unfit for habitation and take the issue to district court. If the court agrees, an eviction notice will be issued to Cobb.

Johnson said they are looking for some sort of action from Cobb such as signing up for rural water or putting in a well system and then taking a permit out for some type of septic removal.

“Even though the five days have lapsed, if we were to be presented with a plan at this point, we’d be happy with that,” Johnson said Monday. “All we care about the house is it be equipped with what’s required or somebody doesn’t live in it.”

Asked about his plans for the property, Cobb said Sunday, “We’re going to meet in district court.”

Schock said the city commission has been talking about cleaning up the town for a couple of years and decided they were ready to issue the complaint.

“If they don’t have it done, we’re just going to a citywide cleanup,” Schock said. “We’re going to take down any buildings that need to be taken down and remove all vehicles.”

Custer Health officials say they had visited Leith to survey the properties identified by the city before Cobb’s plans for a white supremacist community were exposed last month.

The other two nuisance citations given to Cobb related to two decrepit buildings on other pieces of his land. Aaron Johnson said they are structures that can potentially harbor rodents or attract children who could injure themselves

The other nine nuisance complaints issued were given to property owners that owned abandoned vehicles and properties with piles of construction materials.

Jeff Schoep, the leader of the National Socialist Movement that held a town hall meeting in Leith on Sunday that drew more than 300 protesters, told reporters the national group is looking into the legality of the attempts to condemn Cobb’s property. Supporters will be ready to file a lawsuit if they believe Cobb’s civil rights are being violated.

Keith Johnson, an administrator with Custer Health, said they will speak to their attorney soon to determine the next legal step.

Said Aaron Johnson: “We don’t go out looking for these, but if something is reported to us as a complaint, we have to follow through regardless of who it is.”

We do need people with far greater assets than mine to invest in Leith. If the wealthy were to offer [relatively] magnificent sums for tiny properties in Leith, don't kid yourselves--you bet some would sell.

I just spoke well over an hour with Jill, the publisher of the Grant County News (I think that's the right name). She called me.

April has no building to connect water to. I was with Jeff yesterday when he went in and recorded his property. We took photos for http://nsm88.com website. So that recordation is no secret. I expect Jeff will get hassled as I have been.

The William L. Pierce Pvt Leith Park lot is by the old post office. It is close to the main water lines. But now the 'trick' is that state building codes will be instituted for the very first time. Especially for me, Jeff and any young Whites who come here. So that is the new game.

IF folks were to en masse roll the dice and roll into Leith in RV's and campers, they could stay on my lots. I'd get plants, fed agents, non-Whites. But let's assume only Whites, for sake of imagining or argument. Firstly, that hasn';t yet happened with profoundly extensive media coverage. I can't make people roll. I can't. They enjoy the 'entertainment'. It will likely, over a span of time, evolve to much more, even with all the roadblocks authorities throw up.

Frankly, considering the statement that would be made to the world were my vision of Leith to occur, it is another commentary on how shell-shocked Whitey is that it doesn't happen quickly. Because millions of Whites have considerable assets. "I Can't Tell You Why" as the Eagles' song goes. You know in your hearts and selves though, don't you?

It seems they are referring to Jeff Schoep's recorded property (recorded yesterday) and Mike Bencz' recorded property (recorded today).

My house will soon be under the aegis of the state non-profit, 'Credo 64 DNA Unlimited Engineering Now (Credo 64 Due Now)'.

I will also be filing complaints with Sheriff Steve Bay, my two ND US Senators, the FBI, the ACLU and the Department of Indian Affairs. The Indians have left the reservation and gone on the declared Warpath against me, thus breaking their treaty obligations. They are now subject to federal arrest under established federal law. I will soon be issuing a press release on this serious federal treaty Warpath infraction.

Craig was talking about how he can't get young working Whites to move to Leith. This is mostly because it is a 2 hour commute a day, 1 hr each way, to the well paying Dickinson oil fields and the recent generations of Americans are too spoiled to bear that.

In Ukraine or Russia today many young men would die for having 2 hours of their day lost in a commute to making $45,000 a year. The average salary in Ukraine is $2000 a year. The reason Leith isn't booming is most Americans don't want to put up with a 2 hr commute, unpaid, every day. The young men like to live in Dickinson with the strip clubs and whores.

I was out selling newspapers on the street at age ten in the snow.

These current generations are a bunch of fucking fags.

                .

                .

Leith, North Dakota, cannot stay out of the news since Craig Cobb came to town. But is their controversial resident being targeted by a government agency for his political views?

"As odd as it may seem to many people, luxury goods don't mean that much to me," says Craig Cobb, Leith Resident/White Rights Activist.

Among those things that don't seem to mean much to Leith, North Dakota's, most infamous resident are apparently, accommodations for water and sewer. His home has neither.

As a result, he recently received three notices to deal with these, and other, issues. Custer Health, the five-county health district that includes Grant County where Leith is situated, says Craig Cobb has 30 days to rid his buildings of vermin, repair buildings and cut the grass.

He had five days to present a plan to provide water and sewer for his property. That period has expired.

"We're here to look out for Mr. Cobb. He's a senior citizen and you have groups of people that are trying to, in whatever manner, get him out of the community, and that's morally, and in every way, it's wrong," said Jeff Schoep, Commander, National Socialist Movement, during his visit to Leith Sunday.

However, Custer Health Administrator Keith Johnson says Craig Cobb is not being singled out. The process of cleaning up Leith began before the Cobb controversy and his white rights' agenda surfaced when a resident alerted Custer Health regarding issues at other Leith properties. As a result, a survey was conducted and 12 notices were issued -- including three to the Cobb property.

Custer Health says they didn't even know anyone was living there at the time. However, according to Section 62-03.1-01-03 of the Plumbing Code, any building used as a residence in North Dakota must have water and sewer. In a statement to KX News, Custer Health says, "We do not intend to discriminate against him. We are going to treat him just like anyone else." They note, "the city council and residents are motivated to clean their town up now that they've seen what can happen when they don't."

Custer Health also says since the consequence could be Craig Cobb would not be able to live in his house, they may choose to handle the matter in District Court, versus administratively, to ensure he is afforded complete due process.

Nine of the Notices are to other residences or landowners in Leith for dangerous buildings and harboring vermin. Custer Health says some of those are to Leith City Council members.

Regarding Craig Cobb's Notices, Custer Health confirms he calls periodically, but that "he doesn't want to talk about his issues, just about the things that interest him."

Can someone host an audio file for me? I would put it on podblanc, but i lost my video-making software in an Air Mac hard drive replacement crash. they gave me $50 card to buy the highest level Mac vid software which i will be doing.

I just called SPLC, under general advisement from a local deputy, to put them on legal notice that I do not want EVER AGAIN to be contacted by them via telephone or any other means. Ryan Lenz has repeatedly called and emailed me, constituting harassment/stalking under North Dakota Century Code. Grant county sheriff's has already talked to the state's attorney who has said he will prosecute if I have the evidence (which I do).

So this audacity recording is my telling Heidi Beirich (the highest admin. executive or director the receptionist was willing to connect me to...and Ryan Lenz was said to be in the room, according to the receptionist) that the SPLC must cease and desist from making harassing phone calls to me.

I will be seeking a lifetime restraining order against the Southern Poverty Law Center and all of its agents, associates or actors, paid or otherwise, into all future. I will also be seeking civil damages.

Craig was talking about how he can't get young working Whites to move to Leith. This is mostly because it is a 2 hour commute a day, 1 hr each way, to the well paying Dickinson oil fields and the recent generations of Americans are too spoiled to bear that..
                    .

Craig has the foresight of a man whose father made his living establishing subdivisions. Leith will blossom. The question is when and how. An hour of commute is not much in North Dakota where the roads are long and empty, so it is not the commute. The reason Leith has not taken off is that people are pack animals and the packs are gathering in a herd in the man camps being established by the oil companies.

However, there will be enough mavericks who will prefer the picturesque village of Leith once it is discovered and the move toward gentrification has begun.

I think Craig should not divest himself of any more lots until he finds White people who are willing to pool money resources to hook up to the water and sewage lines. Certainly it is a surprise that this demand has suddenly emerged but the requirement of standard plumbing is a punch that can be rolled with.

Craig has done a stupendous job of bringing public attention to his real estate development. He got a lot of free publicity. Now a lot of people have seen the beautiful village green of Leith and will want to be part of the project. There might be a potential to recruit from the already existing man camp residents who are White people who want to be in an all-White community.

Clearly, we have dozens, maybe hundreds or even thousands of White racists throughout the country who need to leave their homes because of dangers posed by non-Whites as well as economic blight.

Disharmonic convergence has fallen upon us.

The same weekend that people attended the long-planned Governor’s History Conference on Civil Rights, white supremacists and their allies held a meeting in Leith. The small North Dakota town also became the site of a corresponding rally organized to push back against the politics of hate.

The history conference featured Terrance Roberts of the Little Rock Nine, a major figure in the history of U.S. desegregation.

By chance, harmonic or otherwise, I am reading “Devil in the Grove: Thurgood Marshall, the Groveland Boys, and the Dawn of a New America” by Gilbert King. It was the winner of the 2013 Pulitzer Prize for general nonfiction. The picture “Devil in the Grove” paints of the South in the late 1940s and early 1950s is truly racist and terrible. Marshall, who later was named to the U.S. Supreme Court, traveled from city to city across the South defending blacks accused of rape and murder in a system that did not provide them with justice and often left them hanging by the neck from a rope.

In the South of Groveland, Fla., the sheriff, prosecutor and judges all failed tests of human decency, morality and Christian values. They violated the constitutional rights of three black men and killed a fourth out of a desire to appear “tough on black crime” and to protect the system. Deputies beat the Groveland Boys and tortured them until they gave false confessions.

Race issues in parts of the American South after World War II were not just about segregated education and voting rights, they were also about the violent oppression of black people, including by some in business, industry and government. It was done under a Confederate flag and often a white sheet.

Marshall shepherded this case, as well as the cases of other blacks sentenced to hang for crimes they likely did not commit, into the appeals process, where higher courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court, read the Constitution with less-biased eyes. It’s part of what led to the civil rights movement. It was the application of constitutional law to an unlawful, oppressive system. It gave people, all people, hope.

That hope and its basis in the U.S. Constitution are lost on white supremacists such those who gathered in Leith.

And our reaction to Craig Cobb, the proponent of white supremacy who has a toehold in Leith, gets tangled up in that same Constitution that secured freedom for all U.S. citizens, no matter their race, gender or sexual orientation. The Constitution’s First Amendment gives Cobb the right to say what he will, until he crosses the line into hate speech.

People may not want Cobb in Leith, and they may not want to hear what he has to say. I know I do not. But neither should we be willing to take away his First Amendment rights, any more than we would want to take away the rights of the protesters who rallied against Cobb’s meeting in Leith with Jeff Schoep of Detroit, the commander of the National Socialist Movement, a white supremacist group. At least not until Cobb’s rhetoric becomes hate speech, which might be a blurry line and one that Cobb comes dangerously close to in his public utterances.

White supremacy has an ugly, brutal back story. Its ends violate the Bill of Rights. And when white supremacists articulate their hate in the larger community, they should not find comfort under the First Amendment.

Leith, North Dakota, is under siege from a white supremacist who is attempting to turn the town into an all-white community. Today, Craig Cobb and his dream of Cobbville, are On Our Radar.

Tuesday, the month of October creeps in, a time of year known for wizardry, haunted houses, and the monsters within them. It’s the perfect time to tell you the story of Leith, North Dakota, and the good people who live there.

Evil incarnate has come to Leith, in the form of a man named Craig Cobb, and he has caught the citizens of Leith in a web so cleverly constructed, every move they make to free themselves only strengthens the cancer that has metastasized in their midst.

There is no more perfect a setting for a modern day ghost story than Leith, North Dakota. The ill-fated General Custer and his men are said to have camped on the banks of the Cannonball River near Leith in 1876, on their way to the battle of Little Big Horn.

First or second time I recall seeing this Scottsdale item in print. Might be second, if first was on some obscure blog and therefore I dismissed. I see SPLC is cited. Maybe Aldolphus knows if I would get to ask SPLC in an interrogative -- "suspected by whom?"

The only thing I can think of in AZ is that I posted in 2002/3 or so about a jew who was in charge of something like the state diversity office while also being a high official of SPLC or ADL. There was the case of the local NA young man who had his throat slit on a public sidewalk by a spic --- the jugular severed, leaving him 2 min. to live, but a surgeon literally chanced to be walking by. Could be SPLCADLSLATTMOSSAD didn't like my pursuing that matter and told the kwap connects to fold me in as a Scottsdale suspect. Why not?

On Monday, the University of North Dakota held a symposium entitled “Cobbsville? A White Supremacist Takeover of Leith, North Dakota.” It was reported by local news sources that noted white supremacist leader Craig Cobb was invited to, and participated in, a panel discussion on civil rights, social justice, and Leith, N.D., sponsored by the university.

By inviting Cobb to participate in this symposium, UND has made the conscious decision to legitimize him (in at least a small way) by treating his viewpoints and positions as somehow deserving to be treated as valid and afforded him a stage to be heard. While it is educationally unbiased and academically enlightened to allow Cobb a place in the discussion on race, it is naive to believe that his intentions are in any way equal or benign.

Is UND aware that Cobb is the creator of the website Podblanc, which is a white supremacist video sharing website billed by Cobb as an alternative to YouTube? On Podblanc, Cobb has praised persons who have murdered minorities through spree killing, and has actually called on lone wolf racists to assassinate enemies of his cause.

He is wanted in Canada on a warrant for fomenting hate, and his current efforts to build his white utopia also include granting land ownership in Leith to hate mongers such as Tom Metzger (former Grand Dragon of the KKK) and others. As such, we now have one of the most dangerous white supremacists as a land owner in Grant County – one who, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center, is suspected of conspiring to damage and destroy buildings and property, stemming from a 2004 mail bomb that targeted the Scottsdale, Ariz., diversity office.

While we understand that UND has come a long way in its efforts to become a diverse and inclusive educational institution, we cannot forget that the university is still embroiled in an ongoing struggle over its Fighting Sioux nickname, and is only a decade or so past the scandals surrounding its benefactor Ralph Engelstad and his love of Nazi memorabilia and his infamous 1988 Nazi-themed birthday bash in Las Vegas.

Considering that UND has such a sizable minority student population, I am dismayed that the university so flippantly allowed Cobb a platform for his anti-minority rhetoric and hate. As an alumnus, I question the judgment of my former university. As a minority, I am disturbed by the voice that UND granted to this man.

As a member of UnityND who was at Leith and saw Cobb and his Nazi brethren flying the swastika all over town, I am dismayed that UND has afforded even a drop of legitimacy to his dangerous and hate-filled message. As the grandson of a World War II veteran, I am sure my Ojibwe/Arab grandfather who fought against the Nazis is rolling over in his grave.

Ferris, Belcourt, N.D., is with UnityND.

REGAN, N.D. -- The white supremacist trying to turn the tiny town of Leith into an all-white community has his sights set on another North Dakota town.

Craig Cobb has made offers on nine vacant lots in Regan, about 40 miles northeast of Bismarck.

A Bismarck realty company confirmed that an offer of $6,700 was made. It was not accepted because it wasn’t “full price,” the company told WDAY-TV.

Thirty-five people live in Regan. Residents there said they want to grow, but not with Cobb’s help.

“I would say we don’t need a Craig Cobb here in town,” Regan Mayor Marvin Gillig told WDAY.

The real estate company says the listing has since been removed from the Multiple Listing Service.

Cobb said that’s discriminatory, and he reported it to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Kynan and Deborah Dutton and their five children moved to Leith a few days ago to begin building
Craig Cobb's dream of an all-white supremacist enclave in town.
                                .

LEITH, N.D. — The first family to begin turning the tiny Grant County town of Leith into an all-white supremacist enclave arrived during a blinding snowstorm.

Kynan and Deborah Dutton, formerly of Oregon, are living in the home owned by Craig Cobb, a hate crimes fugitive who plans to take over the city council when white nationalists represent a voting majority.

“I’m really proud. They are the first,” Cobb said. “We can make a lot of headway in changing the world if we have 17 people there (Leith).”

It won’t take many to change the town of Leith, population 24, the official count before the Duttons and their five children ages 4 through 11 arrived in a red mini-van Saturday, during the weekend’s heavy snow.

Kynan Dutton, 28, an Iraq war veteran and self-proclaimed skinhead, also was in Leith in September. He was among supporters and bodyguards for Jeff Schoep, commander of the National Socialist Movement, formerly the American Nazi Party. Schoep called a town hall meeting to explain his extremist philosophy and drew an anti-hate protest crowd of about 300 people, many of them from the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation.

Cobb said Thursday a supporter donated a 33-foot trailer he plans to put on his property.

Many others have expressed interest in his Leith project, he said, and claimed, “I can induce many of them to come right away.”

Lee Cook, a Leith city councilman and neighbor, said the presence of the Duttons raises the level of seriousness about the whole matter.

“It was just Cobb before. It’s not just Cobb anymore. Here’s the news: Somebody’s here,” Cook said.

Besides moving in a pull-along trailer, Cobb said he plans to apply for several building permits. He purchased 12 other lots in town and has since made symbolic deed transfers to three other nationally known white supremacists.

The Duttons say they are home-schooling their children and intend to make Leith their home, even though they know people don’t like them or want them there.

“We’re happy to be part of it,” Kynan Dutton said. “Now that I’m here, the National Socialist Movement is here.” He said he’s also in Leith to protect Cobb against threats and to protect Cobb’s civil rights.

The Cobb residence is under scrutiny by the Custer District Health Unit, which served notice to him to show a plan for equipping the house with running water and sewer.

That notice expired and it appears the issue may wind up in court, where a judge would have to decide which health codes legally apply.

The Duttons say they are using an outhouse — the kids don’t mind it — and have plenty of fresh bottled water.

They plan to make water and toilet accommodations in Cobb’s house until they can build their own, and raise chickens and livestock, if that’s allowed, and a garden. Flags with swastikas and other supremacist symbols line the broken-down sidewalk leading to the house.

Cobb said, “They (health officials) think as soon as they condemn me it’s all over. It’s not like that at all. We’re still going to be the majority.”

Kynan Dutton said he’s a trained chef and is looking for kitchen work. If no one in the area will hire him because of his looks and beliefs, there’s always Bismarck-Mandan, he said.

The couple say they’re community-minded and plan to help out wherever they can around the area.

“We’ll smile and wave and I’ll be leading by example. Instead of saying, ‘I’m the great white man, with the great white family,’ I’ll do it by my actions,” he said. “We’d like to bring the town back to life; repair the park and improve the buildings.”

Deborah Dutton said her family may not be able to change people’s views about them or make peace in the community.

“We’re not here to make war either. We’re here to practice our civil rights. We’re ready for it. The kids are healthy and happy. They love it here,” she said.

Kynan Dutton said his beliefs boil down to a few words: “Secured existence of white children.”

The Duttons said they know of at least three others who are planning to move to Leith in the near future.

Cobb said he attempted to buy nine lots in the city of Regan and the lots were quickly pulled from the real estate listing. He said he’s asked the federal Housing and Urban Development to investigate. He said he’s also looking at property in Crosby.
